  • @Pedro Jesus , it could also be fuel.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 3:44:42 PM

  • @Peter True. Even then. But it can become an issue. There's always a first time. It may not be Somalian pirates but the danger is there.
by Pedro Jesus 11/23/2011 3:48:27 PM

  • We have outages here frequently. When we lived in Mpls where they have 2 old NPP's as major power sources we frequently had outages but those were mostly weather related. Lots of big old trees plus winter weather. Up here you need a back up heat source like a fireplace or you will freeze to death. :-)

  • @lillymunster , same here, though we virtually live in town (one block away from city limits). The outages are mainly related to big old trees and lack of will/money to put cables underground.
By the way, we figured that alternate sources of energy (which is solar in our case) would save us a quarter of our grid power consumption. I'd do it, if the installation costs were not extraorbitant despite some tax breaks. No wonder that only roughly 500 households among the millions in this state participate in the program. It would take an enormous political will providing the government support to make the transition bearable for everyone.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:23:14 PM

  • lilly, as to the person who kindly offered to translate for us. I still would be curious to learn about the conversation the two visitors to Unit 1's isolation condenser had. Do you still have a link to the tepco vid?
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:26:14 PM

  • @Peter Oh I had forgotten about that one. Where they were inspecting the condensate tanks?
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:30:02 PM

  • @Peter, is that the grid tied program you mentioned previously?
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:32:10 PM

  • @lillymunster , the two guys stumbling over the rubble, looking at gauges and at the red twin tanks of the IC (not the condensate tanks). This was the most surreal footage I have seen so far, :)

  • @Peter I will go hunt
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:32:39 PM

  • Here it is, we had it embedded in our article about the trip inside and the IC tanks. www.simplyinfo.org

@Peter, do you want me to email it to him or will you?
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:34:51 PM

  • @lillymunster , yes, Dominion offers it. You can feed back from any source of your choice. The equipment must be approved though. It seems a good first step, just too expensive. We were looking at 50 grant to finance this idea.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:35:03 PM

  • @Peter that is hefty for a solar system. Did that include any batteries?
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:36:15 PM

  • lilly, would you please send him the link?
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:36:37 PM

  • @Peter will do.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:36:48 PM

  • @lillymunster , not even?
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:37:45 PM

  • ... sorry, no batteries.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:38:39 PM

  • @Peter batteries are usually a large part of the cost. It makes me wonder if Dominion purposely made the systems high in cost and then requires people to go through the program in order to grid tie.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 4:42:39 PM

  • @lillymunster , that is a point which is difficult to haggle over. They insist on equipment that does not pose a hazard and suggest a variety of product lines. In addition, I saw an option that permits the use of equipment other than what they suggest. However, in that case you incur extra cost for certification and usage. I can see this working for a large scale non-residential operation with ample roof surface like a dairy farm.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 4:51:49 PM

  • @Peter The only part of the system that should need to be qualified is the equipment box that switches and controls the power being sent to the grid to assure it is not going to do damage. The rest of it is irrelevant such as what solar panels you buy.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 5:07:19 PM

  • lilly, I am looking for a demo project around here to see first hand what this entails and why.
    by Peter 11/23/2011 5:13:12 PM

  • @Peter good idea. I would assume they have a model installation on a home somewhere. If you have brands and models of components you can google prices to see if they are price gouging too.
    by lillymunster 11/23/2011 5:14:24 PM

  • Dominion implemented a pilot program with an animal shelter. I see what they have got to say.
