REFILE-TABLE-Japan nuclear plant ops (Takahama No.2 to go offline) af.reuters.com
by Mid Valley 11/27/2011 11:59:35 PM
TEPCO has reported some spikes in gas temperature readings and air conditioner (primary containment) temperature readings at Fukushima Daiichi No. 2 plant. These readings show some sharp increases, or in the case of the A/C plant a "stair step" increase. Some alarm may be generated in the public (and the press) if these are not properly interpreted. atomicpowerreview.blogspot.com

So they slowed watering to compensate for the balance with hydrogen to keep a hydrogen explosion at bay. Now they are getting drastic temp spikes? Are they likely related or no?
by lillymunster 11/28/2011 12:21:12 AM
www.houseoffoust.com that is what i noted earlier. tepco's comment: "Investigation because of the possibility of failure was observed (return temperature D / W HVH, room temperature gas reactor suppression)"
@lillymunster no, the spikes cannot be related to reduced watering. either thermometer failure (but they always measured fine before, and now they fail simultaneously?) or corium heating up.
by Edano 11/28/2011 1:05:15 AM
the spikes are at 85° (drywell hvh return air duct) resp. 102° (torus air).

TEPCO did not act on tsunami risk projected for nuclear plant
TOKYO, Nov. 28, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s department responsible for managing nuclear power plant facilities did not act on a risk of massive tsunami near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant projected in an in-house study in 2008, ruling out an immediate need to better protect the power station from seawater flooding, company sources said Sunday.
Despite the projection of a tsunami as high as 10.2 meters, officials of the department at the company's headquarters insisted that such a risk was unrealistic, they said. In March, the power station was ravaged by a tsunami as high as about 15 meters.
Tsunamis triggered by the massive earthquake on March 11 flooded power supply facilities at the utility's Fukushima Daiichi complex, crippling reactor cooling systems and consequently triggering nuclear fuel meltdowns. english.kyodonews.jp

@all I don't know whether it is old news for you, but this was just in the news of german radio broadcasting "Deutschlandfunk": the director of the Fukushima Daichi plant resigned from his position because of bad health. They said they could not specify the illness because Tepco didn't inform about it.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday that the head of its troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has been hospitalized and will be relieved of his post for medical treatment, effective Thursday.
The utility declined to provide details regarding 56-year-old Masao Yoshida's illness and his accumulated radiation exposure, citing privacy, only saying that doctors have not indicated a link to radiation. His illness was detected during a recent checkup, TEPCO said.
Yoshida has been directing onsite operations to bring the radiation-leaking plant under control since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami triggered Japan's worst nuclear crisis there. He will be succeeded by Takeshi Takahashi, 54, head of the nuclear power and plant siting division. english.kyodonews.jp

Tokyo Electric Power to sell KDDI shares for nuclear compensation
TOKYO, Nov. 28, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday it will sell its shareholding in KDDI Corp. to the telecommunications company for 186.28 billion yen on Tuesday to raise funds for compensation payments related to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
KDDI offered on Monday to buy back up to 10.59 percent of its outstanding shares in terms of voting rights from the market. TEPCO holds 357,541 KDDI shares, which represent a stake of 8.42 percent.
The utility will incur a capital loss of 35.15 billion yen on the deal due to the decline in the stock price and book the loss for the October-December quarter. english.kyodonews.jp

Strahlengrenzwert im Zwischenlager Gorleben laut Staatsanwaltschaft überschritten
28. 11. 2011
Radiation limit is exceeded in the Gorleben interim storage facility, according to prosecutors
28th 11th 2011
By his own calculation of the value of the Prosecutor Lüneburg radiation at the intermediate storage facility for 2011, 0.294 millisievert per year (mS / h).
The intervention levels, which should lead to immediate freeze on all further deposits is 0.27 mS / h. Citizens' Environmental Initiative Lüchow-lamented the current transport and storage permit.
"We demand an immediate stop of the Castor transport," said Kerstin Rudek, chairman of the BI Lüchow-Dannenberg.

Fukushima plant chief to go on sick leave
The head of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is stepping down for health reasons.
Masao Yoshida of Tokyo Electric Power Company has been in charge of dealing with the situation at the plant since the March earthquake and tsunami damaged the reactors.
The utility says Yoshida, who will be replaced on Thursday, is resigning in order to receive medical treatments at a hospital. The company says it cannot disclose his illness and level of radiation exposure as that is personal information.
In a statement issued on Monday, Yoshida expressed his regret over leaving the plant at a crucial time and apologized to all the people involved. He said he has to undergo treatment for a disease that was discovered in a health check-up.
Yoshida spoke to reporters on November 12th when the damaged plant was opened to media for the first time since the accident. He said that he had expected to die several times during the first week of the crisis.
He added that when he saw the hydrogen explosions at the Number 1 and 3 reactors, and when his team was unable to pump water into the Number 2 reactor, he thought it was the end.
The utility says Takeshi Takahashi, who is a manager at TEPCO headquarters, will succeed Yoshida.
