by lillymunster 11/26/2011 6:41:36 PM

the german police is equipped like military.
by Edano 11/26/2011 6:44:05 PM

but they have severe problems crossing a river :)
by Edano 11/26/2011 6:46:12 PM

@Edano I find it amusing that the people seem to outsmart the police without lots of high tech gear.
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 6:47:21 PM

Hmm I bet one of those death rays would cut through track rail. :-)
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 6:47:37 PM

@lillymunster the last 30 kilometers to gorleben the castors must be transported on trucks. this is usually the hardest part of the transport. there is only one road.
by Edano 11/26/2011 6:54:02 PM

Do the people arrested get in much trouble? Do they just arrest them and let them go right away?
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 6:58:21 PM

@lillymunster i think they let them go after 24 hours, but some of them will get a trial, if they can prove them guilty for whatsoever, but no strong penalties.
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:00:17 PM

I put together this new castor info and set it to publish later tonight.
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 7:01:24 PM

@lillymunster the map is nice. i've been looking for such a map since yesterday.
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:02:09 PM

gorleben is the designated final waste storage facility in germany. it is a salt dome deep in the earth. but it is leaking and so it will never be approved as final storage. meanwhile there are millions of spent fuel stored and nobody has thought of how to get them out there again. it is not in a remote rural or mountain area, there are lots of inhabitants.

Does anyone know what the govt is using now for "safe" levels of exposure per year?
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 7:10:57 PM

by Edano 11/26/2011 7:11:04 PM

maybe it is a cinical detail, but gorleben is situated directly at the former boarder to the gdr. now, after reunification, it is in the central part of germany. this was not part of the plan in the 70s.

Storing steel casks in a salty environment long term?
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 7:14:32 PM

by Edano 11/26/2011 7:29:12 PM

but of course, you cannot compare it to u.s. police behaviour. i did not want to imply that.
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:30:51 PM

@MaryW xmas shopping ? ;)
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:34:04 PM

that's why i prefer ebay.
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:36:01 PM

In the US there is a coordinated effort in the police violence against protesters. The dept of Homeland Insecurity with the approval of congress and the prez coordinated with mayors of all the cities that had protests and set out the plans to kick out and crush protests. All were given the permission to use that kind of force even against peaceful protesters. There was an interesting article a few weeks ago that explained the change in US police tactics against the public and how it relies more on violent actions like pepper spray and tazers rather than crowd control or physically dragging people off. It is really a mess but this was not a few "bad actors"
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 7:39:05 PM

We refer to it as combat shopping. Way beyond my tolerance level. People drive like maniacs and behave like naughty children in the stores and the mall. I purposely avoid going out to buy things from now to January.
by lillymunster 11/26/2011 7:40:07 PM

there are police forces with military equipment, like Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS), Sondereinsatzkommandos (SEK) or GSG-9. there is not always a clear distinction in their tasks, they are used against protesters and hooligans. another heavily discussed issue is that the german policeman is still not identifyable. they don't have numbers or names on their uniform, and they don't want them.
by Edano 11/26/2011 7:42:52 PM

@MaryW The Patriot act ushered in lots of things that allow this kind of thing. The militarization of the US local police forces is a pretty obvious end run around Posse Comitatus.

the GSG-9 is so well equipped, they are even deployed in afghanistan and bosnia, secretly of course. intelligence and sabotage.
