Experts discount claims of U.S. deaths from Japan radiation
    By Linda Carroll
A provocative new study released this week suggests as many as 14,000 Americans may have died as a result of exposure to radioactive particles blown here from Japan after the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown in March. But even though the report is gaining some attention, experts say there is no scientific basis for its claims.

  • Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted to approve the final rule for the Westinghouse AP1000 design and which also granted a rule change requested by Southern Company to allow construction to begin before the NRC staff have incorporated and published all reactor design changes adopted by the Commission today. One of NRC’s longest-serving staff warned in NRC documents that the reactor’s containment could shatter “like a glass cup” due to flaws in the design of the shield building if impacted by an earthquake or commercial aircraft. In the publicly released votes on the matter, Chairman Greg Jaczko disapproved the proposal to allow the acceleration of reactor construction, Commissioner George Apostolakis voted to approve it, and Commissioner William Magwood’s vote did not refer to it. In the final vote, Chairman Jaczko was overridden by his colleagues.

  • @M.I.A. quick build it before the public realizes what we are doing! Once they get started they figure it is harder to force it to stop.

@all - I know there were some critiques of the AP 1000 design over the summer. Should we write something up about this design and the details? The media never tells anyone about it other than "its better than fukushima"

    Yotaro Hatamura

His 10-member team has compiled a "massive" report on what happened at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant when it was hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and the response by Tokyo Electric Power Co., according to a statement from Hatamura's office.

  • There are groups against the Watts Bar nuke complex in GA. They have been fighting the massive tritium leaks the current units have since they started breeding tritium for the DoD.
I do think it needs more attention. The fact that they are trying to ram rod through these plant builds is very dirty.

  • Very sad to hear about the Christchurch quakes. Liquefaction can be so frightening and destructive. CHCH sits in a bowl, when there you can imagine it filled with liquid. I was at an emergency response training meeting in my area last week and was told that our area has the same soil conditions as CHCH. This was the first time, I've heard the recommendation to have a personal floatation device in your car/emergency kit. Not the kind of thing, anyone wants to hear.
