    Don't blame Japan

After seeing countless health scares over the years, it is hard to surprise us here at ACSH with something new. But our jaws dropped upon seeing a report claiming that radiation from the meltdown of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactor in March somehow caused 14,000 people in the U.S. to drop dead.

We had hoped that such a ridiculous report would receive no attention whatsoever, but when some began to believe that it was true, a host of experts came forward to debunk its baseless claims. One of these experts, ACSH advisor Dr. Robert Brent, makes some particularly cogent points. The authors of this “study” tried to assert that just because there was a slight increase in the number of deaths in certain U.S. communities in the period following the Fukushima event, this means that the Japanese disaster must have caused it. But Dr. Brent points out, “It has to be biologically plausible before you think about linking the two.” There is absolutely no evidence suggesting that low doses of radiation could cause nearly immediate death, as this report attempts to claim. As Dr. Brent puts it, there is “not even a remote possibility.”

“This is surely one of the clearest examples we have seen of confusing coincidence with causation,” stated ACSH’s Dr. Ruth Kava. “It’s hard to believe a peer-reviewed journal would publish such a ‘study.’”

  • @all - I have a post on evacuees and their current situation that will go live on the website late tonight/tomorrow morning. David Slater from Sophia University in Tokyo had the opportunity to personally visit with people living in the temporary housing complexes. He was kind enough to allow us to post his brief interviews as part of that article.

    by lillymunster 12/24/2011 3:03:08 PM

  • @Ian , the biggest flaw that Mangano & Sherman introduced into their study is that they extrapolated their findings to the whole country, whereas the sample they examined was only drawn from a small part of the country and hence cannot be representative for the whole country. #Representative sampling will become an important issue in Japan as well. I wrote on this issue here: brainmindinst.blogspot.com
    by Peter 12/24/2011 3:45:36 PM

  • @Peter There are a bunch of factors ignored in the study. Nothing explains cause of death vs. death numbers. They also do not look at per capita deaths. If you look at infant deaths the total number of infants in that cohort at that given time varies. There are peaks and drops in births so you end up with concentrations of infants in an age group. Of course with more in that cohort at a point in time would potentially have more deaths but not necessarily more deaths per capita. You would also need to sort out deaths absolutely not caused by radiation such as car accidents etc.
    by lillymunster 12/24/2011 3:50:48 PM

  • @lillymunster , perhaps one way to approach this issue, is to look at the prevalences of the top five causes of infant death after the first detection of radiation on the West Coast on a county-by-county or state-by-state basis across the nation and see what cause remains at the top and break it down by gender and ethnicity. If a common prevalent cause is identified that could be associated with radiation, you may begin to ponder a mechanism.

  • @Peter I wonder where we could get that kind of data. I have not looked for public health statistics but I would guess 2011 ones would begin to trickle in over the next few months.
    by lillymunster 12/24/2011 5:10:27 PM

  • @lillymunster , county and state health departments would compile such data and the cdc. I searched once for data like this around Hanford. Washington State had pretty good records.
    by Peter 12/24/2011 6:05:13 PM

  • @Peter cool, do state health departments feed it up to the CDC and they generate out publicly available data? Mangano gave the impression that detailed CDC data was not public?

    by Peter 12/24/2011 6:40:50 PM

  • @all - GoDaddy, the company the website and domain name (not the scribble pages) are current hosted with has been supporting two US proposed laws that would severely restrict internet useage, websites and in the case of SOPA they could take down your website & domain without any proof of wrong doing and it would stay that way until you were able to prove your innocence and there doesn't seem to be any mechanism in this law to even do that. So it is a case of guilty until proven innocent.

For now I am keeping the domain and hosting with GoDaddy until the legal mess is determined as either defeated or becomes law. If either of these are made legal I will begin looking for hosting and domain registration outside the US. Any changes would be seamless so there would not be interruptions or outages on the website and web address.
