Were those rain drainage trenches? Because what other reason could they have to dig trenches around reactor buildings.

it might make the source of contamition easier to find and contain and they may have thier own pumpimg system that they can get back operating

most industrial plant have" tunnels/trenches" the mechanicla/electrical systems run through them. some are "like NASA" 30' wide by 10' high concrete thoughways. but most all industrial plants have "trenchs appr 4' wide by 4' deep. the mechanical systems run underground.. for many reasons..

yesterday when we were loking at above round damage someone asked if the piping systems that are broken off might be "feedwater" not haveing plant drawings its only a guess but they would have major protection (i hope) around the critiacal systems since 9/11. i've been wondering what !!! what better than to put them in a secure reinforce concrete sealed "trench"

water in basment???? trench ??? makes a lot of sense.. good pathway.. water runs downhill and always seeks its own level... they talked about air seals @ doors!!!! if they use baffle seals as a regular seal and do not have compressed air left... they may have lots of "compromised areas" not just the rod pools... I would suspect that any tunnel not a drainage tunnel would be "sealed"

When they say, there was a partial meltdown at #2. Does that mean the top of the rods melted into some big blob with a solidified outer shell but still molten inside? Or is the water sufficient to completely cool such a mass?

The level of radiation at a similar trench for the No. 1 reactor was 0.4 millisievert per hour, the utility company said, adding that radiation could not be measured at a similar location for the No. 3 unit due to difficulty getting there.

ocean readings starting to make more sense now! TEPCO saying "tide was reason nubrs were wrong did't make sense... in US very little is allowed to "discharge" directly to ocean/rivers due to EPA reg's. (don't know about japan) but most discharge systems would not be affected by the tide (although I also do not know the differential between low tide and high... can be 15-20 feet the further north you get... ours is around 5 feet.

Does the 4 dead birds (3 types) i saw today in my hometown (Romania, Constanta) related to this? It's a small chance but i found some worryingsome info on the net weeksmd.com and made the connection because traces of japan radiation should arrive or already arrived over Romania. Should i worry?

@nls At 3:30PM, March 27th, we found that there was water in the trenches of Units 1 to 3. The radioactive emission at the surface of the water was 0.4mSv/h for Unit 1 and over 1,000mSv/h for Unit 2. As for Unit 3, we couldn't have access to the surface because of rubbles. We will continue to monitor water in the trenches. www.tepco.co.jp
