  • @elainekirk2001 was just reading same... in plan terms that now means the data statistics regarding exposure... has become "as they determine" that verbage gives big companies the leway to decide "if and how it will be recorded" see it all the time in our business... an employee sitting in a chair 8 hrs a day with a broken leg and bandage arm... is NOT concidered a "lost time day" because he is AT work"... this is why the data is always so "low"... laywers run the world!! sorry to all laywers...

  • @NHK Listener -- 1,000 mSv/h in Unit 2 trench - sure looks like Unit 2 containment is waterlogged, and leaking. Only alternative explanation I can imagine is overflow from flooding SFP's, but I think that less likely. Any experts out there care to comment?

  • @Joshua Diamond I think it is overflow. They have pumped in some cases 3times the amount need to fill a spent cooling pool.

  • Good evening Dean! Most of the talk has been about the reactor 2 water measurement of 2.9 billion Bq / cubic CENTIMETER and its subsequent botching. They said that at that level it would give off 1 sv / hour :(.

  • @dean The alarming thing about it was that initially they said that the majority of the nucleotides were Iodine-134 particles. Later they said they mixed it up with Cobalt or something. Also, there was another report about Chlorine-38 in the water in the turbine room of reactor 1. Both Iodine-134 and Chlorine-38 are very short lived.....so a lot of people are thinking it is an indication of renewed fission. Any thoughts?

  • if they see what's called fresh fission fragments from a fission .. then yes.. it's the only way they can be seen, from a reactor physics standpoint tho.. it seems unprecedented to have a fission with out the criticality happening. if criticality occurs I don't think it would be a sustained one but it could release fission fragments like those

    @dean Maybe ask about some consistecy concerning units of measurements so laypersons are not so confused? Jim
    @Dean: I'd like to have an opinion about #3 reactor. Comparing to #4 and documents we have seen about Mark I desing, it seems to me that the building has collapsed lower than the top of the spent fuel pool. If so, its integrity could not have been preserved. Anyone knowing this plant design saying that I'm wrong would be great....
    @dean Survey what they think caused #2 torus to rupture? Seems like the biggest unknown to me. Thanks

  • If you have a radioactive puddle (say, stable and not rapidly decaying) and remove half of it - do you reduce the exposure rate by 1/2 ? I'm still in a muddle about the puddle.

  • make sure we don't get mixed up on a puddle.. like water... with the molten fuel if it has melted into what some may say puddle. the puddle of water in the turbine building contains radioactive particles which are emitting the high radiation level, removal of the water would probably leave behind some residue of the contamination and still be very high.

  • yesterday I looked at a video that one of us put up and it was of a japanese nuclear physicist talking over the reactor situation and he had graphs on pressure, but, he didn't have data from the early parts of the accident but .. his theory is. that as a consequence of the earth quake and subsequent affects.. there could have been whats called.a LOCA accident early on .. there was some 2-3 hours of data missing but he thinks that may have happened. a LOCA right near the time after scram of the reactor , it it was a big LOCA could have caused the fuel to over heat at that early time.

  • @dean, good morning, I saw that video, too. I thought it was a significant piece. I hope they can recover some earlier data. And for those of you who want to entomb the beasts quickly. I hope they find out how the leaks happened precisely for the sake of the safety of all other reactor vessels, before they must enclose the reactors for good.

  • @Scilla, that may be a typo. Late last night that exact number was ascribed to water in the ocean just north of the plant. It wasn't in standing water at the complex.

  • Hmm. From the JAIF report, "It is presumed that radioactive material inside the reactor vessel would have leaked outside the containment vessel at unit-1, 2 and unit-3, based on the investigation of the water sampled at turbine building" So would that mean the reactors have breached or melted through, or just that water from the core is leaking back out the routes used to run water through?

  • @dean inteview article with employees in bld#3 at time of quake, before Isumani spoke of "steam or fire" unable to breath" (10 mins.) does sound like they had piping/mechanical faluire from the beging... steam relief vavle (using diagm.) looks like it will release 1st to the bottom of contaiment (toruts) very litte info to go on, just one employee and one interview... sounds like they are dealing with many types of breaches... the mechanical acesses to the contaiment vessel and secondary building create many pathways. look back at the actual picture of "under construction" every stub is a connection... with a potenial leak.. and the piping route to it.....

  • nancy.. in general.. there can be contamination in water that and it stays there but if that water gets outside it begins to seep in the ground and can carry the contamination with it... depending on how deep the water table is, those particles can migrate through rain water that seeps in or other from snow etc. the earth is a great filter but there is a chance it can get down to the water table and show up in water like we've seen... the other one is AIRBOURNE.. those particles that get airbourne through some mechanism.. like those explosions where particles are released to the atmosphere and then get carried off into the air and up to the jet stream then carried around the globe depending on winds... etc..
