@LM, as long as we are seeing many small quakes, it usually means that the plate is moving, and it is small breaks as it moves along. It's when you don't get those small breaks and it loads up and does a larger fracture quake that it is a problem. So far just seeing a massive amount of movement going West towards Japan. But the quakes on the eastern side of the San Andreas is not usual, especially now in Arkansas, Kentucky and New Brunswick (Canada). An indication that the North American plate to the east of the San Andreas fault is moving also.

Since you can see the entire world on that map, it is interesting to see where all the quakes are in the world right now, scary !!!!

Most of the quakes in the Japan area are hitting South East of the city of Fukushima.

Poor Japan, it seems to only be getting worse over there !!!

Hopefully Mt Fuji won't erupt with all of this intense seismic activity.

@LM, something to keep an eye on !!! Watching the East side of the plates in Calif. is really important because whatever is moving here, is pushing the West end of the plate in Japan. If they do not continue to get small quakes, it will load up to a bigger stress fracture quake there. But that entire Pacific plate is still moving and doesn't show any sign of slowing at this point.

@Scilla, that is the first time they are stating that #1 is breached !!!

As a recap, from the other page: 4 core has no fuel, 5 & 6 are shut down, 2 & 3 have pretty definite breaches of some kind (which acts to relieve pressure, so nothing build up), 1 is marginal, I doubt it could build massive pressure (needed for any big explosion). Net, this is not a Chernobyl, something going to have a massive, graphite-rod-enhanced, explosion. On the other hand it certainly is really ugly, I don't disagree that this merits a raise in designation.

Nuclear safety regrets its response to Fukushima
The government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency admitted that it has sometimes failed to properly manage the accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Senior agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama made the statement to reporters on Monday, one month following the quake and tsunami that severely damaged the power plant in northeastern Japan.
Nishiyama said the agency failed to clearly address the problems at the plant, as one emergency followed another.
He said the agency will thoroughly review what it has done so far, so that it can restore the cooling functions of the reactors while preserving the safety of the Japanese people.
The agency is playing a central role in gathering information and overseeing the power plant as the government's nuclear safety regulator. They have dispatched officials to monitor progress at the plant.
But it has been regularly criticized for failing to coordinate media briefings with the power company. They have also been under fire for not providing enough information to the Nuclear Safety Commission, which offers technical advice to the government.

4 isn't going anywhere -- there's nothing in the reactor to blow up, all fuel from it is in the SFP. 2 &3 have breaches, natural pressure relief (venting). #1 is likely most worrisome, because its core (the main pressure vessel) is probably most intact. The SFPs are indeed problematic, but not from a general explosion standpoint -- holes in the roofs and walls should vent any hydrogen. 5&6 are shut down -- yes, cooling needs to be kept up, but they are in as "calm" a state as they can be, until fuel rods can be removed.
