Are we getting an accurate picture of the levels of contamination in the US. Lots of incidents posted. I started working with jojo to try to map some of that but got side tracked with image projects. The spikes in the last week in contaminated water and foods is getting worse but the US govt. is saying nothing.

@Nancy We have received no forecast maps or deposition estimates whatever from the US government. All we have is isolated tests of rainwater, air and milk.

@Hank Scorpio From the article Bobby1 posted, Europe appears to have a much different view of what they believe to be dangerous levels of cesium. You would think there would be a set of uniform global standards about radioactivity. I'm sure the Chernobyl experience is driving a lot of their concerns. www.euractiv.com

@Nancy Use the cesium projections at db.eurad.uni-koeln.de to get a general idea of the fallout trajectories. Since higher fallout is observed at 500mb troughs ( www.osti.gov and onlinelibrary.wiley.com ), you can use the 500mb forecasts at www.esrl.noaa.gov to see where local maxima of fallout is moving across N America (higher fallout is blue or purple).

@James Ward - The main concern with cesium is water, veggies and milk. The dilution in water and milk make the current levels absolutely insignificant. My only concern would be the veggies, and it's a long way from being a big concern in my book. Even if it were, there's f*ckall I can do about it, so I just don't care.

The window of 2 am to noon was pre-quake. I had heard a reference to them trying to up the purity on the nitrogen, but that should not have taken them offline for that long.

Those Cryptome T-Hawk images are BS. The whole point of that thing is to go INSIDE. They must have better images. And thermals as well. Not sure what's up with the image quality, perhaps the optical camera has too slow a "shutter speed" for the vibrations of the ducted fan. I'm dubious.

Since they are all 720x480, they are probably stills grabbed off of the video -- I doubt there is any purposeful tampering. Probably a first-pass "see what's there", then in later use they would start to try getting in closer.

If they get no closer then that, they are not shielded and are worried about RF interference.

I am still digging, done with cryptome images, looking at the versions on TEPCO to see if I can get largers versions. I am somewhat sure the horrible quality is the camera or interference rather than TEPCO purposely handing out crappy images. Some images have sliced and shifted pixels and I just watched the AVI video of the drone fly over (parts of it) and it has the distortion and shifted image parts. Could the radiation be that high right above that it is messing with the camera.

It makes sense that these are frame grabs from 720p video. But that T-Hawk should have some much more interesting sensors on-board...

Most recon drones have still HD captures and video. They have more then one camera.

@rob, likely the problem. I still think they are holding out. There are ten images missing and that drone video only showed a portion of the flight. There are image angles in the stills not shown in the video so the video is a brief clip. I think TEPCO is withholding information. The ministry of defense has also still not updated the heat images. They should be posted by now.

@ralph that was my thought. They had to have a still camera on board. Plus we have satellites that can picture a license plate from orbit. Someone has images of what is currently going on. This seems like part of the sudden "clam up" that started last week.

What is odd, the still images taken from the ground of clean up and the water area work are extremely good quality and have no issues.

The HD might go to onboard memory and so not be able to be intercepted and so it is deniable that such info exists.

@Nancy - The clam up has been since day 1. The satellite footage being withheld is an issue, that in my eyes makes the US gov as guilty as Tepco. National Security takes on many questionable forms.
