@Ralph Unger @wtm The towers are inside the plant but away from the buildings inside which the explosions took place. Those are quite robust towers designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, they wouldn't collapse with the explosion's shock waves .

And it is heavy smoke since it is then going to the ground and moving along the ground rather than into the air as steam would.

@wtm But the explosions didn't happen out in the open. They were contained inside the buildings. It would take the impact of heavy debris to take down such a tower and they are too far away.

The spent fuel pools retention walls, made the explosion go up.
I did see the detonation and deflagration post from Gunderson, I still think it is the containment that made the blasts different.

@wtm regarding steam pressure relief valves.... there is a lck of info on what is operational on what unit... some doc's refer to a total of 12/16 valves to the torus and they appear to have different set points.. but i would bet someone is looking at requiring "ruptue disk" set at a % over the highest set point

What happened at #4? it is as strong as #3 ,the building, so it should have been as bad as #2 according to the video I saw, but it wasn't.

@Ralph, we were watching the steam come out of the tops of #3 & 4 units. #4 was the SFP area, and #3 was the reactor area, then all of a sudden, a massive amount of something in the middle of the pic (#3 area) and it completely covered everything, then after it died down, there was massive smoke out of the bottom center of #3 building, not the top/

@Ralph Unger you need to remember that the same component may not have failed on all building, and not all units have the isolation condenser configureation.. these effect the sequence of the relief valves

@Ralph Unger According to Google Earth all the towers are between 600 and 800 meters from the units well inside the NPP. But it's still too long a distance for an inner explosion to seriously damage them let alone cause their collapse.

#3 is showing that if you take a pressure cooker with multiple penetrations, pound on it often enough, then heat it enough, it will find its own way to relieve pressure. WAG is that a penetration at the bottom may have issues now -- curious to see if they have problems keeping water in the RPV.

It's been really hot in there, for some time, temps increasing. All the residual aftershocks cannot have been helping with the piping going in. Perhaps something just plain had a stress fracture, and enough pressure built up so it has given way, a venting path.

@wtm-yes there was a slow rise-wonder what that corres. to? Was it close to time 3 started w/smoke-you can look at each locale and see what time their spikes happened for those that wish to check it out safecast.org
