The international limit for radiation exposure for nuclear workers is 20 millisievert (20 mSv, or 2 rem) per year, averaged over five years, with a limit of 50 mSv in any one year, however for workers performing emergency services United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance on dose limits is 100 mSv when "protecting valuable property" and 250 mSv when the activity is "life saving or protection of large populations."[21]
Prior to the accident, the maximum permissible dose for Japanese nuclear workers was 100 mSv in any one year, but on 15 March 2011, the Japanese Health and Labor Ministry enforced the permitted 250 mSv limit, in light of the situation at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.[22][23] However, the workers at Fukushima plant declined the elevated 250 mSv limit and kept adopting the previous 100 mSv.

The May 21 world-will-end folks have it all kicking off with pacific rim quakes. I imagine they are loving the current mess. They are pretty busy getting the word out, though. If they are right, I picked a stupid time to start my dieting.

At this point I think I would rather see them work on stopping the water flow out of the buildings rather than building tents. How much radiation is escaping upward as long as they keep the SFP watered.

TEPCO to move radioactive water from No.3 reactor

The operator of the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it will start transferring highly radioactive water from the No.3 reactor building to a temporary storage facility as early as Tuesday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, estimates that there is about 22,000 tons of highly radioactive water in the reactor's turbine building and in a connecting tunnel.

The utility says the water in the basement of the turbine building was about 1.4 meters high as of Monday morning, a rise of more than 20 centimeters over the past 2 weeks. Part of the water leaked into the sea last week.

TEPCO says it will move about 4,000 tons of the contaminated water to the waste processing facility. The pace of the transfer will be 10 tons per hour.

The company says it took steps to make the waste facility more watertight, and received approval from the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Gov't, TEPCO keep timetable for stabilizing nuke crisis at 6-9 months

TOKYO, May 16, Kyodo

The Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi power complex, said Monday they will stick to the utility's timetable to bring the current nuclear crisis under control by January at the latest despite the latest finding of a meltdown in one of the plant's reactors.
''There may be some changes to the methods (to stabilize the crisis) but I believe we can move forward with the plan without changing the timeline,'' Prime Minister Naoto Kan told a House of Representatives Budget Committee session.
Masataka Shimizu, president of the utility known as TEPCO, said at the same parliament session that thanks to efforts to inject water, the No. 1 reactor is being stably cooled and his firm will strive to pursue the timetable it announced on April 17, in which it said it would bring the troubled reactors under control in six to nine months.

Japan has begun evacuating people from outside the official exclusion zone around the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

With radiation levels remaining high, small children and pregnant women were the first to be moved with thousands more to be shifted into shelters and temporary housing.

As the evacuation zone widened more details have emerged about the meltdown in Fukushima's reactor number one, with revelations the fuel rods probably melted in the hours after the magnitude nine earthquake in March - a fact not discovered until last week.

North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy reports from Tokyo.

MARK WILLACY: It was the news the people of Iitate village had been dreading. A touch over 30 kilometres from the Fukushima nuclear plant Iitate is outside the evacuation zone, or it was until now.

"I'm sure most of you have lived in this village all your lives and have never planned on moving," Iitate's mayor Norio Kanno tells residents. "To those of you that I now have to ask to pack up and leave your homes, I am deeply sorry," he says.

About 8,000 residents of Iitate and the nearby village of Kawamata are being asked to move, joining the tens of thousands who've already been forced out of their homes by the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima plant.

@rob I would say no I would say megafloats are more vulnerable than ships but obviously tepco have changed all that and decreed that they will weather the storm though they may lose power and drift into international waters but look on the bright side you will know when the radioactive seawater is arriving on your shores as it will be preceeded by a megafloat

thats not sloppy marie I got a google app for screenshots that gives you a adjustable window on the screen so you can just take a shot of the bit you want...trouble is I never remembered to use it and when I did I couldnt find it and this scrib lets me edit them so I just post and edit on the page but got carried away and did one of yours yesterday without asking!! very sorry
