  • Why causes nosebleeds?

The nose is a part of the body rich in blood vessels (vascular) and is situated in a vulnerable position as it protrudes on the face. As a result, trauma to the face can cause nasal injury and bleeding. The bleeding may be profuse, or simply a minor complication. Nosebleeds can occur spontaneously when the nasal membranes dry out and crack. This is common in dry climates, or during the winter months when the air is dry and warm from household heaters. People are more susceptible to a bloody nose if they are taking medications which prevent normal blood clotting warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, or any anti-inflammatory medication]. In this situation, even a minor trauma could result in significant bleeding. www.medicinenet.com

  • U.S. court victories show how to get rid of nuclear plants
    search.japantimes.co.jp
"What did the utility experts reveal in court?

With straight faces, the utility scientists testified that there would never be an accident that would exceed the radiation limits in the regulations. On cross-examination, they were forced to admit that during an accident, maximum radiation safety limits are suspended. In other words, during an accident, an unlimited amount of radiation could spew from a plant but the utility could accurately assure the public the emissions did not exceed safety limits.
The utility scientists also testified that no released radiation would be immediately harmful to the residents living in the vicinity of a nuclear plant. On cross-examination, they were forced to admit that few people die immediately from cancer and leukemia; it takes a period of time for these "health effects," as they euphemistically called them, to occur. In other words, the utility could accurately say, as they are doing now in Japan, that there would be no immediate danger to the residents of the area.

Do you have any thoughts on what citizens in Japan should be doing?
Citizens in the areas around nuclear plants should form a coalition. They should engage law firms to participate in all administrative proceedings that are scheduled to license or extend the life spans of nuclear plants in the country. The lawyers should cross-examine all utility experts under oath. Highly qualified experts should be engaged to testify on behalf of the residents. Local residents and elected officials should be informed every step of the way through the media. Email addresses should be collected. Databases should be created to quickly disseminate information collected at the hearings."

  • @Majj Are they still haveing those big dust storms, some special name I can't remember
    by RBeaner 5/22/2011 9:34:35 PM

  • @Bobby1 heat really? I get nosebleeds at the drop of a hat. We have sustained 90-100F temps up here in the summer. I rarely get nosebleeds in the summer, as Majj said, everyone in the tropics would be constantly fighting bloody noses.
    by Nancy 5/22/2011 9:35:21 PM

  • @RBeaner ???? Where??
    by Majj 5/22/2011 9:35:48 PM

  • @RBeaner Can't remember the name but it gives everything that odd hue due to dust that blows from Mongolia. IIRC it only lasts for up to a month so it should be waning or gone by now.

  • @Nancy From the Yablokov book: "There is a marked increase in respiratory system morbidity everywhere in the territories contaminated by Chernobyl fallout. Respiratory system diseases, which include those of the nasal cavity, throat, trachea, bronchial tubes, and lungs, were among the first apparent consequences of the irradiation and ranged from nosebleeds and tickling in the throat to lung cancer." The amount of nosebleeds increased 3 years later by 65%.

  • Hiroshima, Nagasaki mayors criticize US tests

The mayors of the 2 Japanese cities hit by US atomic bombings in 1945 commented on the report of the nuclear tests held in the US last November and in March.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui told reporters on Sunday that the announcement of the tests several months after they were conducted generates distrust of the United States among the city's residents.

Matsui said US President Barack Obama called for a world without nuclear weapons, so the country should understand the feelings of Hiroshima residents who have been working to abolish nuclear arms.

The mayor urged the United States to refrain from undermining their efforts.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue said he doesn't have enough information to assess the significance of the latest nuclear tests.

Taue said the tests are intolerable if they lead to the development of new types of nuclear weapons.
