Re sunrise. Have a look at the second photograph on this page: forums.dpreview.com
by jt 5/22/2011 4:45:24 PM
Can I just go thru the sequence again Sat am - I ist saw the 'aura' Sat pm - Hud saw the flash. Sun am -we all saw the aura & Deb recorded. Sun pmI saw the pink / White - but full cloud cover... so now we've all seen the light!!!
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:45:31 PM
Thanks everyone for keeping this documented! You're all fabulous!
by LM 5/22/2011 4:47:17 PM
@jt bear in mind 1. the cam looks down at the sea & not at the horizon. 2. it was cloudy both times so unlikely to be reflection from the sea
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:48:25 PM
@jt & also the straight edge of the semicircle was at the bottom
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:49:48 PM
@jt Great idea to look on dpreview, I'm a amateur photographer why didn't i think of that?! And it really does show that it's possible the pink/glowing sky could be just flare/camera. I'm not 100% convinced though, esp. considering the flash and other things people have seen. I wonder of we'll ever get a true answer...
by NervousinNJ 5/22/2011 4:50:26 PM
@you sorry for all the typos, 2 year old sitting on my lap...
by NervousinNJ 5/22/2011 4:51:20 PM
@NervousinNJ I'm pretty sure the pink is dust in the atmosphere which is obvious when the sun sets/ rises. But that doesn't explain all the phenomena
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:51:34 PM
@UKVal agreed.
by NervousinNJ 5/22/2011 4:51:51 PM
@hudebnik There is light before the sun comes over the horizon.
by jt 5/22/2011 4:52:22 PM
@jt - indeed but not in the evening!
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:52:57 PM
@jt what hud saw was at dusk
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:52:59 PM
@NervousinNJ I searched fog sunrise lens flare for the image.
by jt 5/22/2011 4:53:16 PM
By the way all..It's 55 degrees F right now in Fukushima....fairly mild.
by LM 5/22/2011 4:53:18 PM
@UKVal I am talking about the event last night UK / Japan sunrise and not about what hudebnik saw.
by jt 5/22/2011 4:54:40 PM
@hudebnik While I am waiting for an upload to finish, check out the video link below. This is a 24 hour time lapse. Watch when it transitions from night to day, the blue flash (sundown in a second.) Would this an example of what you saw? Just curious :) www.wunderground.com
by deb 5/22/2011 4:55:26 PM
I really don't believe that the evening (pink) pics had anything at all to do with the sun - the light source visible in the pics is 180deg the other direction.
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:55:32 PM
@jt ok -but given the conditions immediately before & after on both occasions I don't buy the flare theory - that's what I thought it was on Sat am then later realised it couldn't be
by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:56:43 PM
@deb - yes I've seen that, and no, nothing like what I saw or what our pink pics show.
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:57:05 PM
@hudebnik At dusk the sunlight is also horizontal. I don't disagree that some interesting motion is happening around the plant. But at dawn and dusk are the light is almost horizontal and what you see will be lit by this.
by jt 5/22/2011 4:59:32 PM
@jt yes but not that brightly and not when the light is from behind the camera (which faces about NE)
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:00:32 PM
@jt - just look at the first pic in the wiki fukushimafaq.wikispaces.com and then tell me that the effect is from a sunset behind us!
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:01:24 PM
@hudebnik it might happen again tonight / japan sunrise
by jt 5/22/2011 5:01:58 PM
Anyone know if Tepco has released a temp for #4 SFP in the last 24 hrs?
by LM 5/22/2011 5:02:21 PM
I've taken many a pic of beautiful sunsets and I've so far failed to produce one like that!
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:02:23 PM
Yes we should watch out.
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:02:29 PM
@deb - will you be able to record Tepcorise?
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:03:03 PM
@hudebnik I will try :)
by deb 5/22/2011 5:04:02 PM
This is the most recent, and while it was recording I took a corresponding Iphone video. Will post that next, clip taken towards the end of this one.
by deb 5/22/2011 5:05:53 PM
@deb -ty!
by hudebnik 5/22/2011 5:06:02 PM
by deb 5/22/2011 5:06:23 PM
@Nancy - do you know where @dean's paper about #1 has gone? I said I'd review it.
@LM - I haven't seen SFP temps for #4 for a couple of days, when it was 85C. @all - these are worth a look, the latest reactor temps. #1 is looking relatively quiet www.tepco.co.jp #2 is showing off the scale temperatures of 400C+ at the bottom of the reactor vessel (corium?) www.tepco.co.jp and #3 is the epitome of instability www.tepco.co.jp

Sunrise was 4.22 in northeast japan this morning (JST). 4.22 was when I could see R3 again. The sun had come up. But dawn occurs before sunrise. If you are going to record it, start around 3.40 JST.
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it will install a heat exchanger this week to lower the temperature of the spent fuel pool at the Number 2 reactor. www3.nhk.or.jp
