  • @estacion Ah, found. But those two articles are slightly contradictory. I wonder which one is right, if any.

  • @Edano How long was it before they restored cooling at Daini?
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:35:57 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus don't know. i wrote the events down "live" an a paper when they occured but i did not add the time. :)
    by Edano 6/8/2011 4:37:31 PM

  • @Edano: Yeah, but the cesium is in basement water --> containment loose.
    by estacion 6/8/2011 4:37:33 PM

  • @Edano It could have helped us estimate what might have happened during the LOCA event. Maybe we can find that information elsewhere.
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:39:13 PM

  • @estacion : i suppose they vented thru the tower, and when you think of the vent duct leak elaine reported further down, it may have settled in the basement.

  • 3.000 Tns of water at 30 times limit radiation.
    by estacion 6/8/2011 4:39:30 PM

  • @estacion And that's according to TEPCO. Hmm...
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:40:09 PM

  • I think it's worth investigating the time frame of that LOCA event at Daini and then comparing that time frame with some simulations that Dean has provided from official US reports.

Well it doesnt look like wear and tear so that alone throws their no quake damage argument out of the door imho daini is only 10mile from daiichi and a much more up to date plant so .. it also means if quake damage that daini has had this leak for 3 months

  • @elainekirk When corrosion occurs the paint cracks. That is the common outcome of deep corrosion. I don't see how that can throw that theory out the door. We need more information to make such a claim.
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:44:06 PM

  • @elainekirk: IMO this is clearly a structure stress of the tank

  • @pedro that is why the imho was in my comment I never claim to be techi but I do enjoy contributing and therefore only ever give my thoughts , my technical talents begin and end with the kettle but even a coffee can be welcome at times
    by elainekirk 6/8/2011 4:47:18 PM

  • @elainekirk I could use some coffee. =)
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:48:02 PM

  • @pedro I will put the kettle on and make everyone a brew then :)
    by elainekirk 6/8/2011 4:49:09 PM

  • @elainekirk Thanks. =)
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:49:52 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus: note how the paint cracks run parallel to the beam. No sings of corrosion downstream.
    by estacion 6/8/2011 4:51:11 PM

  • Pedro.. I wonder how much detail we can get on those reactors
    by Dean 6/8/2011 4:51:11 PM

  • awww ty elaine... sounds wonderful
    by Dean 6/8/2011 4:51:26 PM

  • @elainekirk , when I wish to think about the reactor shutdown processes, I like to do that while steaming and frothing milk at our tiny espresso maker. Quit similar in ways, only no rad releases involved!
by Peter Melzer 6/8/2011 4:52:42 PM

  • @Dean : there must be IAEA reports, it was rated INES 3.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 4:55:53 PM

  • @estacion We would need to know where the screws that secure that beam are at (because that's where corrosion would start from and in where in the structure that beam is. It is hard to make any accurate assumption without more details.
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:56:05 PM

  • @Edano Wasn't there a recent LOCA event at Daini? Like in the last couple of weeks? That's what I was looking for.
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 4:57:38 PM

  • Just on the side, our radnet readings have been wiggling again in the past two days. My home-made meter also showed a peak.

  • @Pedro Jesus It is hard to make any accurate assumption without more details.
    I agree with you.
    by estacion 6/8/2011 4:59:46 PM

  • @Edano I'm pretty sure I read something about a recent loss of power at Daini that affected some of the cooling systems for a short period of time. Was it only a nightmare?
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 5:01:20 PM

  • Or maybe I didn't understand the context. Maybe someone was talking about the March events.
by Pedro Jesus 6/8/2011 5:03:06 PM

  • some unkowns,,, the wiki said that the earthquake affects were below design for the daini plants, we don't know if their power was interupted by the off side transformer outage, don't know status of plant exactly as a result of the EQ, don't know if the cooling capacity powered by the diesels was interupted by loss of heat sink from the loss of service water..
    by Dean 6/8/2011 5:04:17 PM

  • @Dean Yes, there are a lot of gaps in the information...

  • Air in No.2 reactor building to be released
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will release air from inside the No.2 reactor building after lowing its intense radioactivity and high humidity, which have been hampering the work to restore its cooling system.
The No.2 reactor building has 99.9 percent humidity and high levels of radioactivity, which make it hard for workers in protective gear to work inside it for long periods.
Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, plans to install air filters to lower the contamination and humidity, and then open the building's doors to let out the air. www3.nhk.or.jp
    by Majj 6/8/2011 5:06:45 PM

  • @Bobby1 I'm surprised they bothered to mention such a tiny adjustment. "The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) simply raised the March 21, 2011 the threshold of internal irradiation 6000 cpm to 100,000 cpm!"

    by elainekirk via Tepco.co.jp 6/8/2011 5:07:35 PM

  • So they are opening the doors at 2 and 1? What happened to those air filtering systems?
    by lillymunster 6/8/2011 5:08:58 PM

  • @Nancy On the plus side they now announce that cooling systems working .....obviously opening the doors has lowered the temperature ;)

  • #Fukushima I Nuke Accident Tellurium-132 Conundrum: Case of Missing Iodine and Cesium
This blog posted on June 3 that the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency revealed tellurium-132 had been detected 6 kilometers from the plant on the morning of March 12, before the venting of the Reactor 1.
Well, that Yomiuri Shinbun article in that post was incomplete, to say the least. It turns out that it was not only one location in Namie-machi where radioactive tellurium was detected but also at 3 other locations: one more location in Namie-machi, one location in Okuma-machi, and one location in Minami-Soma City.
Moreover, the same air radiation survey done by Fukushima Prefecture detected more volatile iodine-131 at half as much as tellurium, but it hardly detected any cesium-137 except at one location.

  • @elainekirk: These vent pipes are outside of the buildings, nothing to do with water in the basement.
    by estacion 6/8/2011 5:14:56 PM

  • @elainekirk So is that color that's exposed there the brick (?) of the building, or an oxide? Rust? We've seen that same color spattered all over Daiichi.
    by radioguy 6/8/2011 5:15:00 PM

  • elaine,,, their definition of "COOLING SYSTEMS WORKING" can't be the same as the "normal" operation for cooling.. I wish we could get definition on that
    by Dean 6/8/2011 5:15:14 PM

  • @estacion I was just thinking the same. lol Something doesn't add up here.
