  • I need to get ready to travel... will return after I get there..
    by dean 6/12/2011 12:55:44 PM

  • @dean "the core is completely melted in the morning after 12 days 15 hours 20 minutes after reaching the tsunami " this seems far too long, i think.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 12:56:02 PM

  • the core would not need 12 days to completely meltdown, if it started melting only 5 hours after tsunami.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/12/2011 12:56:48 PM

  • must be translation error.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 12:58:27 PM

  • @dean - the article you pasted "TEPCO has so far confirmed.." dated JULY please clarify when really plz.
    by Salu 6/12/2011 1:00:57 PM

  • @Salu : the NISA data reevaluation was some days ago, monday ot tuesday.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 1:04:19 PM

  • @Salu : i looked it up. it was wednesday, june 8.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/12/2011 1:07:45 PM

  • An earlier, better-translated asahi article - TEPCO: Meltdown at No. 1 reactor started much earlier than initially reported (17 May 2011): www.asahi.com
    by es 6/12/2011 1:11:30 PM

  • @edano - maybe it means 'on 12th' rather than after 12 days, which would tally with the graphs. Thanks by the way for the graphs, they are EXCELLENT.
    by hudebnik 6/12/2011 1:13:47 PM

  • @hudebnik : ty, yes i agree. it probably means: the core completely melted on march 12 morning, 15 hours and 20 min after tsunami. that seems logical.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/12/2011 1:15:48 PM

  • they have no plural in japanese, so day 12 == 12 days.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 1:21:11 PM

  • little error, big difference.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 1:22:10 PM

  • What's an order of magnitude or two?
    by hudebnik 6/12/2011 1:24:32 PM

  • @hudebnik What are you relating to? I mean, the context?
by Pedro Jesus 6/12/2011 1:29:57 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus the long article dean pasted a little down.

  • I just found this while doing my assignment I dont know if it will be useful to anyone, I think nancy was gather info at one stage on it.... Radiation and Pregnancy: A Fact Sheet for the Public
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has prepared this fact sheet to help you understand the possible health effects to your fetus from exposure to radiation.

    by Angie 6/12/2011 1:34:57 PM

  • @hudebnik @Edano Is there any mention to "order of magnitude" there? Even my browser search can't find it.
by Pedro Jesus 6/12/2011 1:36:33 PM

  • @dean Hello. =)
by Pedro Jesus 6/12/2011 1:37:16 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus I think hudebnik's was a rhetorical question ;)
    by es 6/12/2011 1:38:44 PM

  • @Edano The cores are non-existent, 1, 2 & 3. The worst is yet to come from all "4" if mitigation efforts fail. I'll say this em trying Hail Mary Passes. This is not a conventional problem, and requires unconventional solutions. Hopefully they try three solutions side by side and put force into the best.

  • 12 hours vs 12 days
    by Markfm 6/12/2011 1:47:53 PM

  • @RBeaner : if they go on cooling, they have all the radiation in the water, if they stop cooling, they will have it all in the air. in any case, it's out of the containment. a lose lose situation.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 1:54:22 PM

  • Water treatment delay, www3.nhk.or.jp
    by Markfm 6/12/2011 1:55:36 PM

  • @Edano Huge difference is, once the new cooling and filtering systems are installed, contaminated water won't go anywhere, whereas contaminated air will keep on travelling around the globe. Some solutions are better (or less worse) than others.
by Pedro Jesus 6/12/2011 1:56:27 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus : sure.

  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice en.wikipedia.org
"The poem begins as an old sorcerer departs his workshop, leaving his apprentice with chores to perform. Tired of fetching water by pail, the apprentice enchants a broom to do the work for him — using magic he is not yet fully trained in. The floor is soon awash with water, and the apprentice realizes that he cannot stop the broom because he does not know how.
Not knowing how to control the enchanted broom, the apprentice splits it in two with an axe, but each of the pieces becomes a new broom and takes up a pail and continues fetching water, now at twice the speed. When all seems lost, the old sorcerer returns, quickly breaks the spell and saves the day. The poem finishes with the old sorcerer's statement that powerful spirits should only be called by the master himself."
a classical theme, but where is tepco's old sorcerer ?

  • @Edano There are existing solutions for radioactive liquids, and also highly radioactive liquids, but I have no experience that deals with Large quantities of highly radioactive liquid. They need to think outside the box.

  • @Veenie @RBeaner "outside the box"
    by Edano 6/12/2011 2:20:46 PM

  • @Edano What?.this is the FIRST time, they found it in GroundWater, did you even read it ?
    by Veenie 6/12/2011 2:21:59 PM

  • that's what i suspected. if the contaminated water has contact to groundwater, how are they supposed to get it out there again ? how big is the capacity of all their filters.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 2:23:07 PM

  • Anybody know what happened with the reddish-brown smoke on #1 last night ?
    by wtm 6/12/2011 2:23:36 PM

  • If you introduced a freezer element to radioactive water would only water molecules adhere to it (remember I am not techi , be patient :))
    by elainekirk 6/12/2011 2:23:45 PM

  • @Veenie : yes, there were reports quite early about this problem. but it is not published on the front pages in japan.
    by Edano 6/12/2011 2:24:45 PM

  • That would be late afternoon Japan time
    by wtm 6/12/2011 2:24:51 PM

  • @Edano Nope, i never seen a report on Ground Water.this is what Bo just mentioned in his RT interview....IF and when it goes into GW.....and here it is !!
    by Veenie 6/12/2011 2:26:39 PM

  • @Veenie www.zerohedge.com
"According to the latest findings, a groundwater sample taken April 6 near the No. 1 reactor turbine building showed radioactive iodine-131 of 72 becquerels per cubic meter, with the concentration level growing to 400 becquerels as of Wednesday. The concentration level of cesium-134 increased from 1.4 becquerels to 53 becquerels." "

  • NIO plans electronic ballast water system
    India Blooms News Service
Panaji, June 12 (IBNS) In the wake of radiation leak into the Pacific Ocean from the earthquake hit plants in Japan, National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa has decided to introduce electronic ballast water reporting system at India’s major ports to prevent the Ocean from being affected. There have been constant threats in the recent past that transfer of waters from one Ocean to another was disturbing the health of the Ocean.Goa Pollution Control Board had, couple of weeks ago, stopped two ships from Japan from entering into Mormugao Port Trust. www.indiablooms.com
