  • Nite Angie!
    by LM 6/12/2011 4:01:05 PM

  • @elainekirk I don't think it is camera flashes as in TEPCO taking pictures. I saw them away from the reactor tops, over the bushes and then in random spots over the reactors. They could be oddities in the video as LM mentioned but we have also seen similar flashes on the TBS cam. Really not sure what they are but we are seeing them frequently.

  • i53.tinypic.com

This flash seen in/through the bushes over by the right-most tower was captured at 20:00 Japan time on 11/06/2011 and doesn't look like an anomaly to me. I guess that's the moon in the top right.

    by es via I53.tinypic 6/12/2011 4:08:36 PM

  • @LM Don't think so, you can see one at 48 seconds in my next video, left of #3 tower, it is "processing" so should be posting in a minute or so.
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:08:46 PM

  • oops, it will be on the right of #3, duh me
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:09:30 PM

  • by deb 6/12/2011 4:10:05 PM

  • @Elaine. I have that image of reactor 4 you emailed open. What sections were of concern so I can do big images of them?
    by lillymunster 6/12/2011 4:20:27 PM

  • @es @deb I noticed a flash near the tree line to the right of the stack near 3 The night before last as well. I agree that it's probably not a camera anomaly..I'm not sure about the random bright flashes we occasionally see in the bushes and sky.
    by LM 6/12/2011 4:20:46 PM

  • @LM I couldn't even begin to say what they are. I am just the messenger of videos, drop them here and read what the tech's have to say. Oh Dean, where are you :)
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:24:10 PM

  • @deb Thanks for posting them! I'm not an expert either...no stress. I love this group think!
    by LM 6/12/2011 4:26:15 PM

  • @LM I agree. I think there are flecks and there are flashes. The flecks could well be anomalies but I'm more doubtful that's true of the flashes.
    by es 6/12/2011 4:27:07 PM

  • @es Totally agree.
    by LM 6/12/2011 4:27:38 PM

  • @es Two different cameras showing the same flashes, I would also doubt it is a camera issue. Plus, the JNN camera is miles away and picking them up, that is frightening.
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:30:59 PM

  • With all that smoke coming from the reactors, would any workers be there? I just can't imagine it is safe, and would assume they have evacuated?
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:39:57 PM

  • @nancy the ground why lay steel sheeting is it because there is a fracture
    by elainekirk 6/12/2011 4:40:10 PM

  • @elainekirk They will put out plates under a crane to give it a steady footing. As for the additional plates, they did bulldoze over that area because there was hot debris or rod parts in that area. I don't know for sure if the additional plates are to shield against ground radiation, cover muddy areas or cover unstable areas of ground. There seems to be some gaps and oddities in the ground by the plate edges. Since they moved dirt and debris there it is hard to tell for sure. Will do some more looking at the pics
    by lillymunster 6/12/2011 4:43:20 PM

  • WTH? Did anyone else see that billowing smoke from the bottom right corner? Will have the video up soon.
    by deb 6/12/2011 4:58:25 PM

  • @deb Where did you see it?
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:07:08 PM

  • @LM on the tepco cam, 2 minutes left on upload
    by deb 6/12/2011 5:07:47 PM

  • In this next video, go to 7:40 and watch closely.
    by deb 6/12/2011 5:11:29 PM

  • processing still!
    by deb 6/12/2011 5:12:09 PM

  • On the flashes, if they're too short and unsustained to be welding, flash for camera stills would be the most obvious answer. No one can stay out there for very long and hope to retain any long-term usefulness as this drags on, so you'd want your key people who are back in command to have good, clear photos for reference. Now, those would be the pics to see.

  • @deb My iPad won't let me view this one for some reason.
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:20:57 PM

  • @LM Give it a few minutes, and try again, could be processing time???
    by deb 6/12/2011 5:22:44 PM

  • @all Anybody know what the short building is past #4? It looks to be steaming as well.
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:22:45 PM

  • @LM waste treatment (one of them) or the common fuel pool.
    by lillymunster 6/12/2011 5:23:44 PM

  • For reference to the night video, and that small building has looked, to me, like it has been blowing smoke for the last two days. www.tsunamioftears.com

by deb via Tsunamioftears 6/12/2011 5:25:37 PM

  • @lilly @deb I've noticed smoke from that area as well over the last few days and those larger flashes I saw seemed to be in that vicinity. Could they be having trouble with the common pool or the treatment facility? Yikes!
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:29:04 PM

  • Off-site centers unprepared
    www3.nhk.or.jp
"An NHK survey has found that most of the emergency response centers built near nuclear power plants are not properly equipped to take measures against nuclear contamination.
The off-site center that was built about 5 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi power plant was rendered nearly dysfunctional due to a rise in radiation levels after a power outage.
More than 90 percent said they did not have filtering equipment in place to prevent radioactive substances from entering the buildings, as required by law.
Although all the off-site centers have substitute facilities, 3 of these are in the same locations as the main ones, and 2 had no communications equipment installed.
The government's nuclear safety agency says it is regrettable that the off-site center in Fukushima did not function properly."
    by Reed 6/12/2011 5:29:38 PM

  • @all I also wonder if 4 might be steaming/smoking from lower floors as well and that might be what we're seeing on the far right near the small building...shrug..
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:32:57 PM

  • Strontium found in groundwater near stricken Fukushima plant
    www.monstersandcritics.com
"Radioactive contamination from the stricken nuclear power facility Fukushima has worsened, the operators Tepco warned Sunday, with probes of groundwater turning up traces of strontium that were 240 times above the allowable maximum limit.
Nuclear regulatory authorities reported finding the dangerously radioactive element near the damaged reactors 1 and 2.
The Kyodo news agency said it was the first discovery of strontium in the groundwater and was possibly caused by leakage resulting from pipelines being stopped up."

  • i56.tinypic.com
@deb @LM Agree that area beyond #4's been smoking for several days. I did wonder if it came from #4 but the other day I saw this odd flash from that area too (see to right of short building).

    by es via I56.tinypic 6/12/2011 5:34:22 PM

  • @all This might sound stupid but....could they be incinerating debris in that area in back of 4 at night to avoid smoke being seen during the day? It might explain the bright flashes in that area.
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:35:14 PM

  • That area to the right of 4 is the common fuel pool building. Trying to dig up some explanatory pics online.

  • common fuel pool building up close www.houseoffoust.com

by lillymunster via Houseoffoust 6/12/2011 5:38:50 PM

  • @deb Re the latest night-vid you posted, we see some lights illuminate the bushes just near and in front of the cam - they come on at about the 5min mark - maybe a car passing by or a light from inside a building?
    by es 6/12/2011 5:40:09 PM

  • @lm that is a sound theory I often see smoke from that area
    by elainekirk 6/12/2011 5:41:09 PM

  • look to the right of 4 on this overhead. You can see these 2 rooftop structures on the building that match the close up I just posted. Common Fuel Pool. Are we getting temps on that anymore? www.houseoffoust.com

  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute Daily Updates :
    June 11th Tracers. June 12th Tracers 2
"The radiation is, of course, one of the main reasons we’re here. As far as we know, this cruise is the first comprehensive study looking at the fate of Fukushima radiation both in the open ocean and the biota. The samples we gather will help give a better idea of how much radiation is out here, where it’s going, how quickly it’s mixing into the ocean, and how it is working its way into the marine food chain.
Each isotope also has an internal clock that allows oceanographers to study processes that play out over different time scales, such as water transport from one ocean basin to another or sedimentation rates in the deep ocean. This clock, the half-life of each isotope, is the time it takes for one-half of the atoms in a particular sample to give off radiation and decay to its so-called “daughter” products." www.whoi.edu

  • @Elaine It's weird because sometimes it seems there must be a bonfire in that spot below the tree line...the brightness flickers and a haze of smoke is visible...
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:45:03 PM

  • @lilly Thanks for the pics..it really helps to get perspective!
    by LM 6/12/2011 5:45:39 PM

  • @lm well they do incenerate and I have a feeling they were asked to analyse the smoke I will have to brose later
    by elainekirk 6/12/2011 5:56:15 PM

  • @Elaine I remember them asking NISA and receiving permission but the I didn't hear anything more about it. Something is definitely happening in that area, whether it be the common SFP or a bonfire.
