    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 10:44:59 PM

  • @Edano Yes, as they say, "in reality, a wide range of radionuclides would be released, not just caesium-137 and iodine-131... but there is considerable uncertainty surrounding the contribution that would be made by other radionuclides. This uncertainty arises from lack of knowledge of the likely amounts of these radionuclides in the core." (in the scribd doc)

  • @es : they could at least give an estimation, couldn't they ?
    by Edano 6/20/2011 10:46:44 PM

  • @Edano Well of course there are no figures for those. They just started testing for them. [rolls eyes] Who would have known anyone would want to see those figures?
    by radioguy 6/20/2011 10:49:21 PM

  • @Edano Well yes, I'd have thought it would be calculable somehow. A guestimate at the very least. Likely that info's in another [unpublished] secret document.
    by es 6/20/2011 10:51:19 PM

  • @es As soon as they admitted core melt-throughs, there should have been figure runs projecting the others. In fact, there almost certainly were, wouldn't you think? This isn't nuclear physics. Well, really it is, but they'd have to have estimates.
    by radioguy 6/20/2011 10:51:42 PM

  • @radioguy Yes, for sure they have.
    by es 6/20/2011 10:52:03 PM

  • @radioguy of course they can do it. but we have to force them to reveal the numbers.
    by Edano 6/20/2011 10:52:46 PM

  • there is a lot statistics and probabilities, but mathematics can easily handle that to a great certainty.
    by Edano 6/20/2011 10:54:38 PM

  • Yeah, but who would want to see those old things? I tell you, TEPCO is walking a very fine line here. If their containment fails, and by that I mean their news containment, and it becomes obvious that they have known for months that everyone around there should have fled, there are parents who are going to be coming after them with murder in their eyes.

  • TEPCO hopes to resume water decontamination soon

Tokyo Electric Power Company hopes to resume the decontamination process at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as early as Tuesday.

The water treatment system stopped functioning only 5 hours after its start last Friday, as high levels of radiation were detected around the instruments used for absorbing radioactive materials.

The utility said the radiation levels in the water were much higher than expected.

On Monday, TEPCO conducted tests on different absorbents and concluded that it needs to change them more frequently. It also found that the amount of contaminated water flowing through the system should be varied depending on radiation levels.

The unexpected problems are arising because the US maker of the treatment system has never dealt with such radioactive water.

Goshi Hosono, the prime minister's advisor in charge of the Fukushima accident, said the system has been proven to decontaminate water and he still believes it will be successful.

The resumption of the water treatment system is urgent as facilities to store contaminated water at the Fukushima plant will reach capacity within a few days.

    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 11:40:53 PM

  • @dean : cool.
"The threats against crusading editors are real due to Tepco's long-standing ties with the yakuza, which recruits homeless men and alcoholic derelicts for short-term and uninsured jobs as "jumpers", who do the clean-up duty inside nuclear reactors. After becoming irradiated, these unfortunates are driven back into squalid urban ghettoes with a fistful of cash for their next bottle of cheap alcohol or a syringe of heroin. That’s labor relations, Tepco-style, which the in-house union has failed to protest. "

  • Iwaki City begins asking about evacuation

Residents in 2 areas in Fukushima Prefecture are being asked if they want to temporarily leave their homes to avoid high levels of radiation.

The 2 areas, in Iwaki City, are about 30 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. They are outside the evacuation zone. However, radiation of more than 3 microsieverts per hour has been recorded in the districts.

Three microsieverts per hour is about 5 times the level of radiation in controlled areas that are designated as off-limits for civilians.

The residents are being asked to submit their answers by June 24th.

An elderly man who lives in one of the districts says he feels sorry for his grandchildren who stand to suffer the most from radioactive contamination.

  • WIN Seattle Conference, July 20, 2010A Changed Environment for Nuclear PowerGregg D. Renkes
It is significant that TerraPower is using only private funding because, in their view, relying on government funding could potentially slow them down. They are alsocombining R&D with commercialization, which shortens the development process. In addition, the first plant is not likely to be built in the U.S. because the NRC is simplynot nimble enough to license the technology in any reasonable timeframe. What is morelikely is that the TWR finds its first home in a country like Japan, India or China wherethere is experience with sodium cooled reactors and a less burdened regulatory regime.I think they have it right. When you look at the TerrraPower approach you can sense the urgency. It is an urgency we should all share as we face up to the challenge of globaleconomic sustainability.
