  • lots of kittytape and car assessoires ! www.tepco.co.jp

    by Edano via Tepco.co.jp 6/20/2011 4:42:32 PM

  • @edano your presentation is impeccable
    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 4:43:07 PM

  • @elainekirk do you see that box on the desk ? headache tablets !
    by Edano 6/20/2011 4:43:53 PM

  • @Edano , did you visit Chernobyl? If yes, did you see any fenced-in artificial ponds with yellow signs?
by Peter Melzer 6/20/2011 4:46:14 PM

  • @marierich Doing good. I have my little sister from Finland staying over for the week and another friend from England coming for a short holiday. It's going to be party every night. =)
by Pedro Jesus 6/20/2011 4:46:28 PM

  • @ Edano the one thing that stands out to me in that photo,,, they have drug batteries in there.. hooked them up in series (what I call daisy chained) to up the voltage and then spliced some where on the panel... how about hydrogen off gas control from the batteries.. hmmmmm
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:46:59 PM

  • Peter.. they had huge ponds at chernobyl from what data i have seen
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:47:40 PM

  • @Edano There are worker comments that they were scavenging batteries out of cars trying to hook them up to various systems to read gauges or run things right after the disaster at Fuku.
    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 4:49:15 PM

  • @dean I don't know why they have not made a holding pond to help deal with the water. I would rather see a holding pond out in the open than dumping it in the sea..
    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 4:50:02 PM

  • @elaine.. did I miss Edano's presentation?
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:50:57 PM

  • maybe they are afraid of a pond due to typhoons and the rain/ not sure
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:51:28 PM

  • www.nrc.gov good one to save to the web page @lilly.. interesting read on the atomic energy act with the millions of changes
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:52:21 PM

  • @dean it was his duck tape pic below I thought he presented it to the community in a calm and controlled manner such panache
    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 4:52:42 PM

  • yes.. lol
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:52:59 PM

  • I wish we could read those charts.. he he...
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:53:42 PM

  • @nancy looking at the building I posted below do you think they will still insist there was no quake damage?
    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 4:53:53 PM

  • it is not normal duct tape. it's pink.
    by Edano 6/20/2011 4:54:20 PM

  • @dean , may be you can help explain. The more I read on the control systems of vintage reactors like unit 1, the more I realize that the controls of vital safety were implemented totally without computer-support. I suppose computers that could do this did not exist at the time. It seems like valve control is largely autonomous and some allow human intervention, which is mostly done by switching electric switches from the control room. Very few allow physical intervention. Dean, do you think the controls are still handled that way?
by Peter Melzer 6/20/2011 4:54:27 PM

  • @Peter, when I saw those control panels it reminded me of reactors where i worked in the 70's that were build in that vintage. Most of the interlocks and controls are all done through relays vice computer controlled. Many reactors in the USA of older vintage performed major upgrades to incorporate DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEMS which are computer controlled to some extent. there has been hesitancy to put the primary and emergency equipment on a distributed control system but not sure what they do now at the commercial plants.
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:57:31 PM

  • @dean , as to ponds, this occurred to me too. But the ponds could be covered with tarp roofs like they plan for the reactor buildings. These roofs may even last longer because they needn't be high and they must not withstand more than ambient temps.
by Peter Melzer 6/20/2011 4:57:41 PM

  • the old panels were green like that and I see some of the old style handles but do see some upgraded instruments like ones I'm use to.. a HODGE PODGE control panel.. with that pretty pink tape Edano mentioned
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:58:20 PM

  • I am all for expediting getting those ponds in .. in parallel with the other treatment
    by dean 6/20/2011 4:58:55 PM

  • Wrshpr mentioned on the other page there is smoke or steam at the plant. Looks like something coming out of 3 and something different than atmosphere generated steam.
    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 4:59:25 PM

  • @dean other treatment ?
    by Edano 6/20/2011 4:59:40 PM

  • @dean do you see an issue with those plastic bladder tanks as a short term holding until they could get a holding pond made?
    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 5:00:00 PM

  • books.google.com @ elaine or Nancy.. can you pull off page 524 in this document..
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:01:24 PM

  • the rad waste treatments @ Edano which so far have not produced much ..
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:01:56 PM

  • @lilly didn't you say the bladder tanks at the usa commercial plants had deer on them punching holes.. they have to consider how robust they would be
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:02:45 PM

  • a pond ...... of what size ? and the groundwater ?
    by Edano 6/20/2011 5:03:37 PM

  • that link shows where they used plant life to absorb radioactivity in chernobyl it is called phytoremediation
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:04:20 PM

  • @nancy, I found a very informative NRC tutorial on the principles of bwr safety systems which I think would help on simply info: docs.google.com
by Peter Melzer 6/20/2011 5:04:24 PM

  • if you all want to check page 524 in that link it has some very good ideas in using plant life, some of which absorb different isotopes..
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:05:51 PM

  • @dean does this work or should I make it a doc (it should enlarge if you click it ) books.google.com

    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 5:06:07 PM

  • @Edano , huge! I have seen systems of interconnected ponds, you can pump the groundwater into.
by Peter Melzer 6/20/2011 5:06:24 PM

  • excellent elaine.. geeeeeeeesh.. how you do that so fast.. that's good.. and good talking points
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:07:29 PM

  • @lillymunster I've been watching the live feed for a little while. It has not been pretty.
    by Will 6/20/2011 5:07:52 PM

  • @ Peter I couldn't get that one to open..
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:08:30 PM

  • @pter I cant get prmission to view either :(
    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 5:09:16 PM

  • findarticles.com more on botanical cleanup
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:09:57 PM

  • @dean that is informative we just need @lilly to harvest yours and @peters
    by elainekirk 6/20/2011 5:10:06 PM

  • @Will Hi will, what else has it been doing? Anything outside the normal evening steam show?
    by lillymunster 6/20/2011 5:10:25 PM

  • ty elaine
    by dean 6/20/2011 5:10:25 PM

  • @Peter Melzer : ah, you mean fish farms. hot sushi.
    by Edano 6/20/2011 5:12:15 PM

  • @Will , I saw your description of your interaction with the post office clerk last night. I could not have acted differently. This catastrophe is not this guys fault. I would have felt incredibly unkind to take my frustrations out on him.
