  • @lillymunster , I was thinking of the proposal to incinerate sewage sludge. There were requests made by Gov. of Japan. I hope that these requests involve different facilities than paper incinerators.

  • @lillymunster , as to the ponds , I recall they are usually lined with some type of clay (betonite) and plastic foil. On top you put layers of sand and raisins that bind metallic cations like in a regular sewage treatment plant. Some radioactivity would become airborne. They may be some leakage into the ground. The point is these shortcomings could be checked and kept in check better than now.

  • And a new research cohort is born.

Tokyo, June 20 : Over two million residents living near the earthquake-cum-tsunami hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are poised to undergo long-term health checks starting from this month.

According to The Telegraph, their health would be closely monitored for the next 30 years to ease growing concerns about radiation contamination.

The health checkups would reportedly start at the end of the month, focusing firstly on 28,000 residents in the three communities that are nearest to the plant, Iitake village, Kawamata and Namie, before expanding across the region.

Fukushima prefectural government authorities announced this move to appease the concerns of the localities over radiation amid the nuclear crisis.

"Everyone is included in this and will be tested over a long-term period, for 30 years or longer. We will start with 28,000 residents, looking at their daily behavioural patterns to determine risks levels," a spokesman for Fukushima prefectural government said.

The findings will be stored on a database created by Fukushima Medical University to monitor the long-term potential effects of radiation exposure in the region.

  • Of course we do have national health care here, but these folks will need to have that supplemented. If they are anything like the hibakusha in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they will have to fight for these things over the next few decades.

  • Another TEPCO worker exceeds radiation limit
Preliminary research shows another worker at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant may have been exposed to radiation above the limit.

Tokyo Electric Power Company reported the results of radiation checks on more than 1,100 workers at the plant to the health and labor ministry on Monday.

The ministry said one of the workers -- part of the maintenance staff at the plant -- is suspected of having been exposed to 335 millisieverts.

The figure exceeds the limit of 250 millisieverts set by the government for emergency situations.

The checks came after TEPCO found 3 additional workers had been exposed to radiation beyond the legal limit. Five more workers are suspected of having received doses of radiation above the limit. www3.nhk.or.jp
