  • @lilly if he did that it would have a huge impact. But it is almost impossible to imagine. He is almost a mythical character, no one ever sees or hears him. He never has an opinion about anything in the press. No one looks at him as wise, or informed. He could seize the moment. Also, pigs may fly.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:48:36 PM

  • @ bo,,, well i remember watching the last sumari and the emperor seemed to have more power then ... or maybe that was hollywood
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:49:37 PM

  • @Dean. I had a couple of other people ask me about that. They are going off of the missing section where the building fell away. If you take an overhead shot and trace where the work floor is left it is just past the containment area. The containment bulb should still be there.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 12:49:44 PM

  • @dean hey dean, you link is "under maintenance" ?????
    by Edano 6/21/2011 12:49:53 PM

  • @dean that was a thetan who was hunting Tom Cruise.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:50:10 PM

  • @bo I see the British monarchy frequently speak out in support of various social issues or charities to try to call attention to them. But totally different culture and such may not happen elsewhere.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 12:51:15 PM

  • dang.. sorry Edano I was looking for some information on source term release estimates and popped into that one
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:51:52 PM

  • @lilly they also have a role, however ceremonial, in the operation of govt. The emperor of Japan is really like a hothouse flower.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:52:00 PM

  • Pinups are getting kind of busy.
    by Markfm 6/21/2011 12:52:03 PM

  • lol bo ... @ hothouse flower
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:52:28 PM

  • Remember, Japan is a society set up by the American occupation forces. They stripped any vestige of power from the emperor.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:53:13 PM

  • when I was young I lived next door to a Japanese family who were decendants of the sumari in that show... their name was MORI..
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:53:16 PM

  • Japan has a very proud past, and very ashamed recent past. That is why there are so many samurai movies, in order to show noble or brave Japanese masculinity you have to set the movie a few hundred years ago.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:54:32 PM

  • news.lucaswhitefieldhixson.com @ Edano.. I clicked on that link and this opened
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:54:47 PM

  • @bo : same in germany. but something went wrong in japan.
    by Edano 6/21/2011 12:55:14 PM

  • also @bo I had forgotten about the part where japan cannot have a nuclear weapon...
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:55:35 PM

  • @Edano the Japanese have a real complex about the Germans. Lots of people here think that Germany has done a great job of dealing with its "war guilt" while the Japanese have totally buried it away.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:56:08 PM

  • @dean the Japanese are not allowed under the American penned constitution to even have an army or any military. That is why the military here is called the "Self Defense Force."
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:56:41 PM

  • I noted that logo on a plane that was transporting the crown prince,, amazing
    by dean 6/21/2011 12:58:48 PM

  • It's a big issue here, whether to revise "article 9" which forbids a military.
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:59:30 PM

  • well, they shouldn't have attacked america ...
    by Edano 6/21/2011 1:00:18 PM

  • So as you can imagine when considering all of this, the relationship of Japan to the US is a very complicated one, typified by subservience. Even as the second largest economy (formerly) they always play the role of jr. partner.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:00:45 PM

  • @Edano, yeah, I think most people agree with that now!
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:00:57 PM

  • Filtering system tested for full operation
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has resumed testing of a filtering system for decontaminating highly radioactive wastewater at the facility.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company resumed the test shortly after noon on Tuesday. The test began before dawn, but was halted around 7:20 AM after a pump to send water into French-made decontamination equipment stopped automatically. The firm adjusted the amount of pumped water before the resumption.
The firm had begun running the system last Friday night, but stopped it after only 5 hours due to a sharp rise in radiation levels around US-made equipment for absorbing radioactive substances.
The firm plans to continue testing the system for 2 or 3 days before resuming full-scale filtering operations.
The plant's temporary storage facility for radioactive wastewater is expected to overflow in about a week.
Tokyo Electric has therefore begun reducing water input at 3 reactors, and is carefully monitoring them for possible resulting temperature rises.
The firm is also considering transferring highly radioactive wastewater to a makeshift tank for filtered wastewater.

  • Anyone want to bet on if they put the contaminated water in a "filtered wastewater" tank they end up losing track of it, either put it in the ocean or introduce it in the cooling system.
    by Markfm 6/21/2011 1:09:08 PM

  • @bo Why is Japan still acting subservient like a defeated enemy? It has been a long time.
    by Bobby1 6/21/2011 1:11:16 PM

  • @bo It is also weird that the most emblematic buildings in USA are owned by Japanese companies. It is, in fact, a very complicated relationship but I wouldn't go as far as subservience. The USA also rely on Japan on many technological and economical aspects. Actually, the USA wouldn't be the strongest economy in the world without Japan, according to some experts.
by Pedro Jesus 6/21/2011 1:13:32 PM

  • @Bobby1 that's part of the dilemma. Why? Many will say that Japan's postwar prosperity is a result of the alliance with the US. They are very happy the US occupied Japan rather than the Soviets (remember, the Soviets declared war on Japan on Aug 9, the day Nagasaki was bombed). So playing side kick to American is seen by many as the key to prosperity. Also, it is partly war guilt. By being aligned with the US they can redefine themselves as part of the path to prosperity for other Asian countries, rather then be defined as war criminals.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:14:08 PM

  • @Markfm I think they may be referring to the tank on site that they use for generic wastewater from toilets, offices etc. They have to keep separate tanks for clean and dirty water for things not related to the reactors. IIRC they had a minor oops a few years ago where they contaminated their greywater tank.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 1:14:39 PM

  • We now know that the "oops" was actually a dry run, TEPCO had been planning ahead :)
    by Markfm 6/21/2011 1:15:37 PM

  • @bo Does this past make the corporate machine more important since it was key to recovery and rebuilding the country?
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 1:16:01 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus that's true, but Japan very much feels itself the jr. partner. Buying American landmarks is a means of compensation. Becoming indispensable to the Americans is a good strategy and ensures a long relationship. It is very much a dominant/submissive sexual relationship!
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:16:10 PM

  • @lilly BINGO!
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:16:30 PM

  • @Markfm This was in old TEPCO documents from years ago. Somehow rad water ended up in the greywater tank.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 1:16:33 PM

  • And it makes it harder for them to have asserted themselves to GE back when the plants were purchased.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:16:53 PM

  • @Edano, I found this IAEA-TECDOC-955 with the title "Generic assessment procedures for
determining protective actions during a reactor accident": www.iaea.org . Pertinent thoughts on page 50.
by Peter Melzer 6/21/2011 1:17:29 PM

  • @bo GE considered it "turnkey" and reading some of the comments GE made about that past relationship they were dictating how it would be. It was TEPCO's first reactor.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 1:18:24 PM

  • When that first plant was built, remember how Americans saw the Japanese. It wasn't that far from the war. Many of the executives on both sides had been involved in some way in the war.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:19:29 PM

  • The Japanese tend to be very enthusiastic about large corporations compared to Westerners. Many here feel McDonalds must be good quality because it could not have gotten so big if it was low quality. There is a saying here, if you need support, lean against the biggest tree.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:20:44 PM

  • Germany and Japan have war guilt because they lost. The US doesn't have any because it won. Though the Allies also committed atrocities like massive bombing of civilians in places like Dresden, and the atomic bombings. Japan's subservience has played a role the post-war US hegemony, which has now deteriorated into permanent war and destruction of civil liberties.

  • time to depart for work.. be back later
    by dean 6/21/2011 1:22:26 PM

  • Later dean!
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:22:42 PM

  • @dean That Mr Lucas Whitefield has got a very good imagination. Very creative indeed. Not so good at analysing photos, though. See you later.
by Pedro Jesus 6/21/2011 1:22:49 PM

  • @Bobby1 agreed, sadly.
    by bo 6/21/2011 1:23:34 PM

  • @dean, the Teno had more power. He could end WWII. But the experience of losing this war and MacArthur saw to it that his power was diminished to a rather ceremonial role, even less powerful than The Queen of England. But influence on the Japanese public opinion he surely can exert.
