  • @Edano Did they not have iodine for the SFP?
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 12:11:52 PM

  • @lillymunster: www.scribd.com they assume no iodine because of decay (?)
    by Edano 6/21/2011 12:13:39 PM

  • @Edano Hmm. I would think they would include some from newer fuel. Maybe at the point the numbers were so huge they considered it of little consequence. I am going to try to write something up for a blog post but with a long list of caveats before the numbers.

  • 21 June vs. 20 June 6:00. #1 parameters pretty stable, still one temp over 100C. #2 pretty stable, small upticks in temperature, 3 of 4 temps still over 100C. #3 pretty stable, temps ranging 128 - 158C. "stable" just means parameters not changing much, not that the RPV is in a good state.

  • @lillymunster we can assume that most of the radiation left will reach the ocean. i am still looking for a clue to estimate the consequences for northern pacific.

  • one thing on releases from fuku, I my experience when there is an accident the dose and plume experts have to have some starting point which in the case of many accidents is a standard set of percentages of halogens, noble gas etc. then the dose and plume experts start to work to calculate what's released, where it's going and project doses to the public

  • @Edano @Munster You're going to have a big trouble finding consistent and corroborating data on that one. Even the Chernobyl total emissions figures are not consensual and vary by a factor of up to 2.5 depending on the source.

  • Accidental water flow into pool may have prevented fuel melting: TEPCO mdn.mainichi.jp "According to the utility, the No. 4 reactor's fuel pool had been connected with a storage pool containing radioactive substances through mobile shield plates...the hydrogen explosion at the No. 4 reactor and other factors on March 15 shifted the shield plates, allowing water from the adjacent pool to pour in and restore the water level."

    by dean 6/21/2011 12:42:36 PM

  • @bo It is taking people who have auto-approve and tossing them in mod. There seems to be no pattern to who gets stuck.
    by lillymunster 6/21/2011 12:42:36 PM

  • Yes, I often have the odd pleasure of posting, then logging in to mod in order to auto-approve myself, again and again
    by bo 6/21/2011 12:43:59 PM

  • @dean the emperor has no actual power of any sort. He is a trophy monarch. But he does have some power in that everyone will pay attention to him. Soon after the EQ he went on the air and spoke to the victims, which I think may have been the first time this emperor spoke to the nation. So he could intervene and make a difference, but the odds that he would, or could even imagine how, are very slim.

Hi-res photographic proof reactor core exploded at unit 3

"The residents of Japan have good cause to mistrust the media, TEPCO officials, and members of their government when it comes to assurances about radiation levels, plutonium dispersal, and the related health risks.

Americans also have good cause to mistrust these same sort of assurances issued to American residents. The following is a letter I just sent to the Union of Concerned Scientists detailing evidence that the Fukushima unit 3 Reactor was the source of the massive hydrogen explosion a few weeks ago.... and the further implications of this easily verifiable fact.

    snip

Today I had another look at the diagram, and noticed something else quite significant that I had missed before. I realized that the top of the primary containment vessel was flush with the floor level of the 4th floor, and that the top of the reactor itself was in the space between the 3rd and 4th floors, partially surrounded by the spent fuel pool.

Look at those photos again, particularly the 5th shot. At the top of the photo you see the skeletal remnants of the wall of the 3rd and 4th floors. It is easy to see the floor level of the third floor - there are two massive steam pipes running behind and below the building...the lower edge of the lower pipe is almost perfectly aligned with the floor level of the 3rd floor. Follow the floor line of the third floor down down from that back wall along the right side of the building, then across the front side of the building near the bottom of the photo. That shows you the floor level of the 3rd floor very clearly, right? There is nothing but air remaining above that level, except for a bit of roof debris which you can see through. The top of the primary containment vessel, as well as the top of the reactor itself, is simply GONE........................"
