  • Although the Fort Calhoun plant is surrounded by an eight foot tall and 16 foot wide protective berm, two feet of water have already made its way to several areas of the Fort Calhoun plant, but authorities say there is "no immediate danger at either plant". abcnews.go.com
    by Majj 6/22/2011 11:25:10 PM

  • While insisting that Nebraska’s two nuclear power plants remain safe in the face of record flooding from the Missouri River, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on Wednesday issued a statement noting among other things “two feet of water” onsite in many areas of the Fort Calhoun plant which is 19 miles north of Omaha. missouri-news.org
    by Majj 6/22/2011 11:34:52 PM

  • As the level of the Missouri River continued to rise over the past few days, more and more news media helicopters buzzed the area. This prompted Omaha Public Power District officials to contact the Federal Aviation Administration with a request that they remind pilots of the NOTAM, or Notice To Airmen, in effect since September 11th, 2001, restricting the airspace around the plant. Similar NOTAMS are in effect for all of the nuclear power plants in the United States, as well as other elements of the critical infrastructure, and are meant to discourage pilots from flying too low or lingering in airspaces.
Unfortunately, this was misinterpreted by some of the media who reported that FAA had closed the airspace over the site. This suggested to some Internet bloggers that things were much worse than officials were publicly admitting, spurring reports that the airspace over the plant had been closed because of a release of radiation. An advisory that had been sent by NRC to the Department of Homeland Security was similarly misinterpreted, leading to reports that operators had flooded the containment building to protect the reactor. public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov

  • Ex-SKF has an interesting piece on Monju reactor. They are going to try to extract the part of the reactor. They claim they can do this without air entering the reactor. Also a 30 minute video by TV Asahi on Monju. In Japanese but still very informative about the plant and lots of video inside. ex-skf.blogspot.com
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 12:27:38 AM

  • Wow! Things were totally haywire after that point. So maybe not a bad sensor? #1 was spewing steam or smoke inside right after the quake. Maybe this second quake and what changed has to do with putting the tent on it and making 1 a priority?
