#4 SFP had a fresh core in it.. certainly the total load of heat in the sfp would be over 4 MW

The Guardian story is on SimplyInfo.org.

interesting tad bit of information... at 350mm of water above the core.. the radiation levels would soar,,,typical BWR SFP... 40 feet deep by 26 x 39 feet, lets say 90 days after fuel discharge and assumed boil off rate is roughly 35 gpm, that results in about .22 feet/hr when you assume 1000ft3/ft depth for level decrease from boil off.. .that's not good
by dean 6/30/2011 11:27:58 PM

Makes me wonder if something similar happened in the US, why it was so downplayed.
by lillymunster 6/30/2011 11:28:09 PM

@dean thoughts on what they may be up to with #4's SFP? I wondered if they let it drop to gain access to some of the plumbing? Still seems a bit insane.
by lillymunster 6/30/2011 11:29:03 PM

probably could happen lilly
by dean 6/30/2011 11:29:45 PM

that's the only logical thing I can think of elaine.. lower the water level to a point where they can make a tie in to existing piping.. but geeeeeeeeesh.. they don't have much time and may not be able to catch up with a good full blown boil off rate
by dean 6/30/2011 11:31:01 PM

TEPCO mentioned a few weeks ago that they were having issue cooling the sfp at 4. This was before they went in to check on the circulation system

www.animatedsoftware.com check out pages A2A-9 in appendix A to see the assumptions for boil off and water levels... it's also in Tables 2.1 and 2.2 of NUREG/CR-4982

time for dinner.. will return in a bit..

Hmm On TCM (Turner Classic Movies) in the US at 8pm "The H Man" about a radioactive man that stalks Tokyo....
by lillymunster 6/30/2011 11:41:33 PM

@lillymunster I love "H Man"!! And good morning all.
by bo 7/1/2011 12:10:17 AM

@bo have not seen H-man yet. The blob is on right now. :-)
by lillymunster 7/1/2011 12:26:54 AM

@lillymunster The Blob is a very key culture artifact in my book! It is fantastic!
by bo 7/1/2011 12:27:36 AM

The Blob is the first movie to focus on the device of the teens being the ones who understand there is a dangerous threat to the society, but the adults won't believe them. They have to kill the monster themselves and prove to the adults that they had not understood the dangers of the modern world. After The Blob this became a very common plot device in sci-fi films.
by bo 7/1/2011 12:29:04 AM

I argue that we would later see this dynamic manifest in the counterculture of the 60s. The Port Huron Statement explicitly states that the students realize that the adults don't get what a threat to their future nuclear weapons are, and that is why students must protest against injustice and militarism.
by bo 7/1/2011 12:30:54 AM

@bo The Blob reminded me how many of these 60's genre movies were drive in movie standards in the 80's.
by lillymunster 7/1/2011 12:31:35 AM

True, Blob however 1958. My poor kids spent their entire childhoods watching these movies with me and traveling to visit nuclear weapon production sites!
by bo 7/1/2011 12:32:45 AM

@bo the Jellyfish vs. NPP stories are perfect fodder for a sci fi movie.
by lillymunster 7/1/2011 12:35:31 AM

Backs are being slapped and cocaine being consumed in some happy Hollywood studio office as we speak.

@Bo, do you know if this citizen numbering system is akin to the US social security number system or something else? The govt. tracking of people's bank accounts sounds a bit creepy.
ex-skf.blogspot.comby lillymunster 7/1/2011 12:49:14 AM

@lillymunster it sounds like a new proposal, and it sounds like it would be more intrusive. I'm not sure what there is here now since I am an alien (don't tell Steve McQueen) and I have an alien number. But many people have told me that Japanese police look at emails and bank accounts all the time with no permission.

My doctoral advisor, who was a longtime historian at Los Alamos, reports that it is raining there now. Not too heavy, but anything helps.
by bo 7/1/2011 12:57:24 AM

@Panserbjorne9 I was really shocked to hear they are storing plutonium contaminated waste in barrels with no protection. Those should be in a concrete bunker.
by lillymunster 7/1/2011 1:01:15 AM

Off to work all, back in a bit.
by bo 7/1/2011 1:12:58 AM

@Panserbjorne9 Yes I saw it! :-)
Added it to the morning news posts too. Now to figure out how I am going to buy one....
by lillymunster 7/1/2011 1:14:41 AM

PB, thanks for the good news posts, they have been a huge help putting together a daily news roundup.
