    by lillymunster 7/8/2011 9:23:54 PM

  • I ran across something interesting. A blog I was reading through had a page of resources for people right after the tsunami. It was things like emergency phone numbers, boards for missing people. There was also three Buddhist shrines listed. This makes me wonder what or how they play a role in helping people through this.

  • @Ian @dh I am going to sound really stupid but are these Monju's rad readings ?

    by elainekirk via Cache.gyazo 7/8/2011 9:41:44 PM

  • @Elaine: Not Monju. These are for Fukui Prefecture graph of radiation rate in atmosphere. Each colored line is for a different district.

  • @dh so it has got much worse?
    by elainekirk 7/8/2011 9:56:43 PM

  • Phonetic spelling of MONJU is もんじゅ and the Kanji characters for MONJU are 文殊. The latter are most common.
    by dh 7/8/2011 9:56:53 PM

  • @dh it was a tweet link that came up in a monju search that is why I was confused

  • @Elaine; I'm not the one to ask but the city in which it is located is the one listed on the left, fourth one down from top indicated by a pale turqoise color. All cities seem to be trending up with some kind of peak on yesterday. I live in NYC by the way.

  • Interesting find. One of the top 3 most radioactive prefectures is in the far south and west end of the islands. The blogger wonders if there is a benign explanation due to how they did measurements. In combination with Bobby's find of plutonium traces around Ikata makes me want to see more and better data for the whole country. japansense.blogspot.com

  • Banks insist no respite for Tepco
    By Michiyo Nakamoto in Tokyo
Japanese banks are adamant they will not waive loans to Tokyo Electric Power, in spite of suggestions a rescue plan for the utility at the centre of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis could hinge on such a move, according to the head of the Japanese Bankers’ Association.
“We are not thinking about [waiving loans to Tepco],” Katsunori Nagayasu, chairman of the Bankers’ Association told the Financial Times.
“I consider a debt waiver to be inconceivable,” he said.
Mr Nagayasu’s comments highlight concerns about the implication of Tepco’s fate for the health of Japan’s largest banks and insurance companies, which have provided the utility with more than Y3,400bn ($42bn) in loans and are believed to be large holders of its Y4,425bn in outstanding bonds. www.ft.com

  • Another one bites the dust, Kyushu president resigns over emails www.asahi.com
    by lillymunster 7/8/2011 11:21:06 PM

  • @lillymunster, I am still reading the NISA report to IAEA and under recommendations I came across these notable suggestions on page IV-146: " As flooding can be considered as a factor of accident management, it would have been advisable to ensure that the lower sections of the nuclear reactor building were water-proof as a measure against flooding...." How is this issue taken care of at Calhoun and Cooper. Would we find flooded basements there?
by Peter Melzer 7/8/2011 11:24:46 PM

  • @lillymunster blimey that is awesome he has set a precedent
    by elainekirk 7/8/2011 11:24:54 PM

  • @elainekirk the fastest resignation to date? :-)
    by lillymunster 7/8/2011 11:25:32 PM

  • @Peter Melzer good question. Dean suggested last week we start trying to gather blueprints and any documents showing upgrades or changes to the Mark 1 units in the US for comparison to Fuku. Since part of the blame game is to blame the Japanese for not doing all the updates. This info would also tell us what actually has been done in the US plants.
    by lillymunster 7/8/2011 11:27:03 PM

  • @lillymunster certainly and without excuses, buckpassing etc I am quite hopeful it is something to hang on to
    by elainekirk 7/8/2011 11:27:18 PM

  • @elainekirk , there is a long list of recommendations for plant improvement in the NISA report. If I was a Prefect, I would insist that the improvements are implemented and inspected, before I'd even consider to give my nod on a restart.
by Peter Melzer 7/8/2011 11:32:12 PM

  • Here is another noteworthy NISA thought on page IV-146:
    "11) Independence from adjacent plants
One of the difficulties hindering restoration efforts following this accident is the fact that there are underground connections to adjacent plants through which contaminated water runs. Although it is more economically efficient to construct plants adjacent to each other so that facilities and control can be shared, it is important to ensure that the detrimental effects of an accident at one plant can be kept isolated from the adjacent plant. As such, investigation should have been carried out to plan the physical separation of adjacent plants or to make it possible to plan the physical separation of adjacent plants."
