That appears to be a labor ministry meeting later this month to discuss nuclear exposure. Not sure if they mean just plant workers or exposure to everyone.

@Peter Melzer anything over 8000 bq is supposed to be handled as rad waste.

I mentioned this the other evening. The Chinese are all over renewable energy.

Hi Peter
by bo 7/12/2011 1:07:01 PM

@ all.. how about this thought.... in the past, those en visionaries say... we have to produce xxxxx terabytes by such and such date... we "HAVE" TO... how about saying.. we've got to figure out, how, to change our lifestyles etc so that we don't need any new power.... it's always MORE MORE MORE...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:08:16 PM

@dean yea there is a big lack of leadership on the issue. At the same time some companies quietly add solar panels to their roofs or re-fit plants to use less power. But there seems to be a taboo in the US at least with encouraging lifestyle change type options.
by lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:10:32 PM

and.. in the nuclear world . like hydro.. they keep trying to push the envelope of operation to get MORE and MORE MEGAWATTS of power squeezed out of the plants (cha ding cha ding$)... I say leave the plants alone and let them run as designed or even reduce power 10% and improve instantly the safety footprint
by dean 7/12/2011 1:10:41 PM

@dean I saw that with IIRC, Dresden, bragging how they upped the MW output considerably. It seemed concerning with how old those plants are.
by lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:11:40 PM

@ lilly.. a couple of days ago I thought i saw some mention of OPERATING CYCLES...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:17:13 PM

@dean yes Smoss found a document for Japan's fuel cycle as 13 months.
www.neimagazine.comby lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:19:04 PM

see.. Majj that's what is nice... you don't see that a whole lot here in USA .. well at least not where i am from.... if our country wanted to send a real renuable energy message.. the white house would have wind mills around it and some solar panels on the top... with the meter ticking making money for the government from selling power to the GRID...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:19:07 PM

@Majj I have to wonder how Germany pulled that off. In the US we can't get the option to sell power back to the utility because the electric company holds so much power over our state government.
by lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:19:50 PM

Some states like California people can sell power to the utility.
by lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:20:35 PM

@ all don't the foreign countries in europe and other areas have different voltages also,,, and, do any have DC voltage...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:23:57 PM

it's sad Majj...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:24:33 PM

Free enterprise, leads to the good ole greed for the money and it's made worse by companies going PUBLIC on the stock market...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:25:23 PM

@ lilly... ty for the link... that clears up the operating cycle.. typcially so many days in length and all driven by the reactor safety package for that particular operating cycle. the safety packages.. ie:.. analyses, fuel loadings, fuel distribution in the core, special fuel burnup levels, new versus used fuel, etc.. all go into trying to get the maximum days of operation out of the reactor fuel.. they want to get every ounce of utilization out of the fuel before reaching the limit on burnup..
by dean 7/12/2011 1:27:56 PM

@dean We came to the conclusion that grid tied wind or solar won't happen where we live so we are looking into ways to build a dual system. South Dakota is #1 in wind resources but we can't get big power lines to transport it out of the state because Xcel energy owns all the power resources in the state. They don't want the competition from wind turbines.
by lillymunster 7/12/2011 1:27:58 PM

@dean the old joke is that if you believe in infinite growth in a finite world, you are either insane, or an economist
by bo 7/12/2011 1:28:32 PM

now that's where I would jot down an executive order if I were president..
by dean 7/12/2011 1:28:44 PM

lol.. Bo.. yep...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:28:57 PM

time to pick on economists...
by dean 7/12/2011 1:30:25 PM

An economist is a trained professional paid to guess wrong about the economy. An econometrician is a trained professional paid to use computers to guess wrong about the economy.

by bo 7/12/2011 1:31:25 PM

so true
by dean 7/12/2011 1:32:14 PM

@ bo... I wonder how the Peter Principle factors in to nuclear today
by dean 7/12/2011 1:33:21 PM

given it is a corporate culture in which certain truths need to be upheld as well as performance goals met, I imagine there are many in management who are products of the Peter Principle.

Fukushima Parents call for resignation of radiation advisor. He told parents it was safe to let kids play outside. Said a 100 uSv exposure was safe to local doctors because he thought they would leave and the medical system would collaps so he lied to them.
