  • Fukushima hay tests high for cesium
Fukushima Prefecture says hay found with radioactive cesium far exceeding safety limits had been left outdoors for at least 4 days after the March 11th disaster.

It says the hay was collected from 7 farms in Shirakawa, a city about 80 kilometers southwest of the crippled nuclear power plant. Tests found up to 97,000 becquerels of cesium per kilogram of hay -- 73 times the government-set safety limit.

The city lies outside the government-designated evacuation zone.

The hay was later wrapped and stored inside a barn in the city. A farm in Asakawa Town, located near the power plant, bought the hay in early April and fed it to its cattle.
42 head of cattle from the farm were sent to meat-processing plants in Yokohama, Tokyo, Sendai and Chiba, between April 8th and July 6th.

The local government is investigating the hay's distribution channel and storage conditions. www3.nhk.or.jp ............All this and they still want to get rid of the 20-30km evac zone. Ridiculous!
    by LM 7/15/2011 12:27:28 AM

  • Some common sense?..... Crisis min: cooling must precede evacuees' return
Japan's nuclear crisis minister says a cold shutdown of the crippled reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant must be achieved before the government allows evacuees to return to their homes near the plant.

Goshi Hosono said at a Diet committee meeting on Thursday that he knows that evacuees from the 20-kilometer no-entry zone are eager to return home.

The plant's operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, aims to complete the cold shutdown procedure -- the second step in bringing the plant under control -- by late this year or the beginning of next year.

Hosono said the government plans to start necessary preparations such as radiation monitoring, decontamination and infrastructure construction in the evacuation zone next week.

  • Sanitary conditions deteriorating in shelters as mercury rises: Hirano
Worsening sanitary conditions and rising temperatures are now the most urgent problems facing thousands of Tohoku evacuees still living in shelters, reconstruction minister Tatsuo Hirano said Thursday.
"I want to seek cooperation between the central and local governments to support survivors by asking them to provide electric fans, insecticides and screen doors," said Hirano, who replaced his predecessor, Ryu Matsumoto, on July 6.

Hirano also said that in the long term, "The revival of fisheries, active use of forestry resources, tourism promotion and planning cities with good welfare services for the aging society" are crucial to restoring Tohoku's economy.

  • @Bo, Elaine brought up a good question. In working on the self protection paper. I mentioned showering as a basic decontamination tool. My understanding of typical Japanese bath set up at home is shower then soaking tub if people use one. Do you know if showers are expected before communal bath houses etc?
    by lillymunster 7/15/2011 12:42:48 AM

  • @Edano Ah, two faced animals, quite freaky looking.
    by lillymunster 7/15/2011 12:43:18 AM

  • @lilly absolutely. Japanese always shower first with soap, and then enter baths, either at home or at onsen (hot springs) or communal baths. They would never enter communal water without showering/soaping up first.
    by bo 7/15/2011 12:44:52 AM

  • Also, FYI-no one is allowed into onsen or communal baths if they have a tatoo.

Gov't to suspend nuclear cooperation talks after Kan's nuclear remarks

    TOKYO, July 15, Kyodo

The government has decided to suspend talks with Brazil and four other countries concerning the sale of Japanese-made nuclear power equipment and technology after Prime Minister Naoto Kan called this week for Japan's eventual exit from nuclear power, government sources said Thursday.

The decision concerns negotiations over completing separate nuclear power cooperation agreements with Brazil, India, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Negotiations with all five countries have stalled since the earthquake and tsunami in March triggered a nuclear crisis in northeastern Japan.

The decision to suspend talks with five countries with plans to build nuclear plants in the immediate future could cause Japanese companies to lag further behind such rivals as South Korea and Russia in the global competition to clinch nuclear power plant contracts with emerging economies. english.kyodonews.jp

  • TEPCO deadline looms

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is aiming to meet its first stage deadline to bring the plant under control by injecting nitrogen into its No.3 reactor containment vessel. But a problematic wastewater system may delay their goal.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company started the injection on Thursday evening to prevent a hydrogen explosion.

The utility had already begun the procedure at the plant's No.1 and 2 reactors, but the work was delayed due to high radiation levels.

The injection is essential for the utility to complete the first step of its plan to bring the plant under the control by the target date of July 17th.

But a French-made system installed to recycle radioactive wastewater continues to work below its target capacity. The device is meant to decontaminate radioactive wastewater and send it back into the reactors as coolant. Tokyo Electric says the problem has been malfunctioning filters.
The utility plans to introduce a newly developed device as an alternative in August.
