  • There are three (yes, three!) interesting and detailed articles in the Guardian today

    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 7:38:27 AM

  • @hudebnik long time no read! Welcome.
    by bo 7/14/2011 7:44:16 AM

  • @Ralph Unger howdy!
    by bo 7/14/2011 7:44:27 AM

  • @hudebnik those wages are a scandal. And, in my cynicism I have taken to calling the skilled veterans corp the Viagra Corp.
    by bo 7/14/2011 7:47:54 AM

  • @bo - I have been lurking from time to time but have been insanely busy and also not much news (other than Murdoch, phone hacking etc!)
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 7:53:48 AM

  • @all: I send 5 days ago the CRIIRAD study (French NGO) Consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi Accident in Japan: A substantial and long-lasting contamination. The link is now in english: www.criirad.org Some results are frightening. The press conference (in french) is on Youtube: www.youtube.com
    by Olivier 7/14/2011 7:56:17 AM

  • @Olivier wow. What a devastating report. Thanks. I will be sure the techie folks here get a copy and integrate it into their work.
    by bo 7/14/2011 7:59:38 AM

  • @Olivier - that's a shocking report, which closely mirrors what Greenpeace found in their investigations in the early days of the disaster.
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:07:17 AM

  • Just thinking aloud - with such widespread Caesium contamination now a fact, where did it all come from? In theory the reactor containments were still intact in the early days, so is this all from reactor 3's SFP and does it endorse Arnie Gundersen's 'prompt critical detonation in SFP3' theory? Tepco still clings to the 'all hydrogen explosions' theory don't they?
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:15:11 AM

  • Meltdown (burn through the bottom of the reactor) and then steam from that material. Just a guess.
by Ralph Unger 7/14/2011 8:16:39 AM

  • @Ralph - amazing how much we still don't know, isn't it? Amazing too how close the longterm result will be to the worst case scenarios, now that we can see how very widespread the radioactive contamination is.
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:20:09 AM

  • Amazing too how the GoJ still seems to be clinging to the 'ignore it and it will go away' approach, even in the face of pretty constant media reporting, especially NHK which seems to be picking up most things now.
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:21:54 AM

  • @hudebnik it has worked for them in the past, so in a crisis, they fall back on old habits. But we all know it will not work this time. They are slow learners.
    by bo 7/14/2011 8:23:05 AM

  • I think that the results of the long term studies of the Fukushima victims will prove the zero is safe radioactivity theory.
by Ralph Unger 7/14/2011 8:24:05 AM

  • There will always be paid endorsers who will claim otherwise. I don't think that it is really disputed among independent scientists anymore.
    by bo 7/14/2011 8:25:28 AM

  • @bo - do you think the 'governing classes' in Japan are yet changing their approach?
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:26:11 AM

  • Some say that a bit of radiation is actually healthy!
by Ralph Unger 7/14/2011 8:26:27 AM

  • Yes I must try it!
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:26:51 AM

  • Hormesis.. right ....

  • @huebnik you already have.
    by bo 7/14/2011 8:27:32 AM

  • I named one of the hot particles in my lungs after Kan. I am asking for help in naming the other 200 or so...
by Ralph Unger 7/14/2011 8:29:54 AM

  • Thanks @bo - here in the UK we have of course had the advantage of Windscale/Sellafield toughening us all up...
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:35:03 AM

  • It is purely coincidental that this is reported today:

Four in 10 Britons will get cancerNumber of people in Britain living with cancer rose from 1.5 million to 2 million in a decade, according to health charity

  • @hudebnik it's a beautiful world.

  • They're fuku-beautiful!
    by bo 7/14/2011 8:41:01 AM

  • A 25% increase in cancer rates must have an external cause, it can't be (in the UK) something that was previously masked by infectious diseases. I wonder if it is the beginning of a '50 years after bomb testing' effect. @bo what happened to the cancer rates inHiroshima and Nagasaki 50 years after WW2?
    by hudebnik 7/14/2011 8:49:11 AM

  • @hudebnik I'm not really sure as I don't work much with epidemiological data. Doh!
    by bo 7/14/2011 9:04:03 AM

  • Heading home. Posts posted may be more unmoderated than they appear.

  • so the government handing out dosimeters is a nice big con

    by d_fuk

Most Geiger counters, dosimeters that are set to sound an alarm at 0.3μ sievert per hour. Natural radiation that number in the unlikely place of residence in general, and I do and I know from personal injury. But the government is 12 times the alarm, and the capacity of the 3,6 μSV miles per hour. It's an act of murder injury slow!

  • @lillymunster @lillymunster morning just seen they are starting nitrogen into #3 in about 40mins www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 10:21:00 AM

  • @elainekirk hrm. I thought they did that days ago? Maybe they hooked it up days ago or something went wrong with the run into the building and they rescheduled?
    by lillymunster 7/14/2011 10:22:08 AM

  • @lillymunster no thety were supposed to start it lunchtime saturday if I recall correctly
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 10:25:25 AM

  • @Elaine, that link you posted right before you took off for bed yesterday. Did you think it was saying TEPCO engaged in astroturfing over reactor issues? It sounded like there was proof they did the whole fake letters/emails and employees posing as citizens at meetings thing.
    by lillymunster 7/14/2011 10:26:54 AM

  • @lillymunster I think we are losing a lot in the translation I am thinking maybe contact mayu on twitter see if she can help I am definately seeing tepco mentioned
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 10:28:11 AM

  • by elainekirk 7/14/2011 10:29:17 AM

  • @elainekirk I asked if DH was around last night. Will see if I can find Mayu later today. I think that one needs a manual verification it just isn't clear. If it does say that TEPCO did that on a large scale it probably isn't a surprise to many but could be a big deal since it really kills the last shred of legitimacy TEPCO had.
