  • @Radioguy They love dealing in half truths, don't they! I love this arbitrary July 17 deadline for nitrogen injection into 3...as if that will make a difference in the leaking RPV. It's a joke!
    by LM 7/14/2011 8:01:09 PM

  • Maybe it would get the GoJ's attention if concerned parents in Japan just started sending them all boxes of local dirt, with a note "Could you analyze this please?". ;)
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:02:54 PM

  • @Lilly I completely believe it. It's all about PR for the Tepco bigwigs and they simply want to mollify the GoJ by meeting these arbitrary deadlines so the people can return to their homes...as if that should ever happen!!
    by LM 7/14/2011 8:03:43 PM

  • @LM WHile I'm uplifted somewhat by Fukushima's ambitious plan to clean up their city of radiation, but it's going to be a while before that's anything but a permanent ongoing process.

  • 1st phase of defusing nuclear crisis 'over' [15 July, 2011]: www.yomiuri.co.jp
"The government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. have concluded that they have nearly finished the first phase of defusing the nuclear crisis at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, according to sources.

Goshi Hosono, state minister for conclusion of the nuclear incident, is scheduled to announce Tuesday that the nuclear crisis has been brought out of a dangerous situation after measures were taken to prevent further hydrogen explosions from occurring at the power plant's nuclear reactors and stable cooling operations were achieved.

According to TEPCO's timetable for settling the nuclear crisis, which was announced on April 17, the deadline for completing the first phase is Sunday. Hosono plans to reveal a new timetable on Tuesday, the sources said."

  • @RadioGuy the boxes of dirt idea is a good one if it could be coordsinated
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 8:06:31 PM

  • @RadioGuy , I do not fault them. But they shall have to continue cleaning until tepco can stop the emissions.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:07:01 PM

  • @Radioguy I'd love to believe they can decontaminate, but I honestly think shuffling around dirt won't deal with the long term consequences. If it were me I would never go back...I know it's not that simple for everybody though. Chernobyl should be a guideline.
    by LM 7/14/2011 8:07:47 PM

  • are the people aware that tepco is still emitting radiation?
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 8:07:52 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I had wondered that myself, should people possibly hold off until emissions are down to remove soil so they only have to do it once?
    by lillymunster 7/14/2011 8:07:55 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I know you don't. I'm just appalled by GoJ, and by extension to the whole sorry lot, because our own agencies have shown no more concern for the welfare of the people. Oh right. Welfare of the people. That's that welfare state they keep talking about.
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:08:38 PM

  • I read a couple of things last night about people decontaminating soil with zeolite and dairy farmers in HI using boron to somehow decontaminate the soil or their cows.
    by lillymunster 7/14/2011 8:09:11 PM

  • why is chernobyl still off limits after yrs whilst they talk of moving children back into the tepco zone ?
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 8:09:14 PM

  • @you , I do not fault the parents. The government is totally unprepared to deal with the mess.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:09:20 PM

  • @lillymunster Probably not, though they'll have to do it again. Rainy season will wash it down into the soil. Now it's supposedly only 2 inches deep.
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:09:44 PM

  • But sooner or later they'll run out of topsoil and need to replace it with clean soil. Good luck.
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:10:35 PM

  • @all What gets me about this decision to move people back in is the precarious nature of 4. What happens when the 8.0 strikes right on top of it? It's irresponsible and criminal to move people back while all the units are spewing and open to the atmosphere. The face palms are multiplying!
    by LM 7/14/2011 8:13:03 PM

  • @lillymunster I think we'll do as much good by evaluating that sort of solutions as any other way. Long term mitigation is going to become the thing. I was happy to learn that the organic farm I buy boxes of produce from grows all the greens in greenhouses, filtered. I'm going to try to make time to go up next week and look the place over, and talk with them about all this. I think we're going to have to look local to help ourselves and our communities.
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:13:19 PM

  • @LM Yeah, three is no bastion of stability either.
    by RadioGuy 7/14/2011 8:16:19 PM

  • @RadioGuy I was thrilled to find greenhouse grown tomatoes from Iowa, how things have changed.

  • Perhaps, the municipalities around the plant could set up dumpsters for rad waste, in which the good people could deposit the scraped up soil.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:27:34 PM

  • The government still seems to believe it can make contamination disappear by dispersal. Talking about counterproductive solutions.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:29:55 PM

  • As to tepco and gov. statements that the crisis is under control. As long as the atmospheric releases of radioactivity from the plant can be measured in teraBq per hour, the crisis is not contained at all.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:32:09 PM

  • @Peter Melzer maybe they should concentrate the muck in the zone all they are doing is chasing their own tails

  • The EPA is getting pressed on the radiation levels in the Northwest. www.koinlocal6.com
    by lillymunster 7/14/2011 8:35:23 PM

  • @elainekirk, yep, I'd turn the plant premises into one huge radioactive waste repository. Imaginative minds can already begin working on how to decontaminate the waste. One thing is for sure, letting people back into the exclusion zone as long as the emissions are as great as reported, means knowingly putting people in harms way.

  • @lillymunster still cant get it maybe it been blocked here is it about a protest?
    by elainekirk 7/14/2011 8:50:14 PM

  • @lillymunster , I think the electrical work at the plant incurred considerable water damage. I guess the operator wants to sound the NRC out what they think is the minimum that needs to be done to refloat the plant.
by Peter Melzer 7/14/2011 8:50:43 PM

  • @elainekirk Here it is:

While some of the water has receded and the conspiracy theories have receded, attention to the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant remains a priority with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC staff is preparing to meet with officials from OPPD, the owner and operator of the plant, for a second time this summer.

The meeting will be open to the public. It will be held at 9am July 27 at the Doubletree Hotel, 1616 Dodge St. The subject of the meeting will be post-flooding recovery actions at the plant, 19 miles north of Omaha.

Fort Calhoun was already shut down when Missouri River flooding began late in the spring. It remains in a safe mode under an Unusual Event, which was declared June 6 because of the rising river.

Members of the NRC staff will also be available to answer questions from the public after the business portion of the meeting.

In June, Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the NRC, toured Fort Calhoun and the Cooper Nuclear Station in southeastern Nebraska. Cooper is operated by NPPD. He reviewed anti-flooding efforts at both plants.
