  • icons-ecast.wunderground.com All eyes are currently on Typhoon Ma-on as it continues to move west and will eventually take a more northwestward track toward Japan. I have been covering this typhoon extremely closely because this storm has the potential to totally devastate Japan if current trends do continue. Although this tropical system has the potential to become a super typhoon, the biggest concern is the fact that this storm will stall over Japan if it does indeed hit the country. If that does occur, not only will certain areas of Japan receive extremely destructive winds but will also receive major flooding. A video and a written explanation is below. firsthandweather.com

  • Lets hope this weather man is wrong : there will be no longwave trough to pick up this system, which will allow this system to stay stalled over Japan for 24 to 48+ hours. The entire southern half of Japan is currently in the biggest danger zone. Although landfall of Typhoon Ma-on is expected to be south of Tokyo, Tokyo could also receive high winds and extremely heavy rainfall. This storm will have the potential to put down 12 to 24+ inches of rain over a fairly large area of the country. Although strong winds are a major concern, this combined with extremely heavy rainfall would definitely devastate the lower half of Japan and impact the entire country. Typhoon Ma-on is expected to make landfall early next week so make the adequate preparations now. If you have friends or family in Japan, warn them now.

  • Kyushu Electric e-mail scam skewed meet result. The number of messages in support of restarting the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors at the Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture would not have exceeded those against the restart, if not for messages sent by employees of Kyushu Electric Power Co. and its subsidiary companies.
More than 130 people acted on an e-mail sent by management urging them to e-mail positive opinions to a public meeting, it was learned Wednesday. In the meeting on June 26, the utility explained the need to resume operations at the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors.
The explanatory meeting was broadcast live on cable TV and the Internet. The organizer began accepting opinions and questions from local residents on June 25, and read some of them during the live program.
According to an in-house investigation into the scandal by the power corporation, 226 e-mails and 60 faxes were in favor of the restoration, while 119 e-mails and 44 faxes were against it. If Kyushu Electric and its subsidiaries' employees are subtracted from those in favor of the restart, those against the restart would have been in the majority. www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • Japan Demand for Geiger Counters After Fukushima Means Buyers Must Beware. Geiger counters, also known as dosimeters, have sold out and prices quadrupled in Tokyo because of worries about radiation fallout since the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown in March. The demand spurred a grey market of “illegal” products that use faulty parts and shoddy designs or are fake, Li said. He declined to say how much it costs Shanghai Ergonomics to make the dosimeters.
Some of the devices on the Chinese market tested by the Shanghai-based company weren’t hermetically sealed or stopped functioning within two or three days, Li said. He estimated a failure rate of about 70 percent for those models. www.bloomberg.com

  • Typhoon Ma-on is forecast to strike Japan at about 20:00 GMT on 19 July.Data supplied by theUS Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centersuggest that the point of landfallwill benear32.5 N,133.0 E.Ma-on is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around203 km/h (126 mph).Wind gusts in the area maybeconsiderably higher.
According to the Saffir-Simpson damage scale the potential property damage and flooding from a storm ofMa-on'sstrength (category 3)at landfall includes:
Storm surge generally 2.7-3.7 metres (9-12 feet) above normal.
Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures.
Damage to shrubbery and trees with foliage blown off trees and large trees blown down.
Mobile homes and poorly constructed signs are destroyed.
Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the centre of the storm.
Flooding near the coast destroys smaller structures with larger structures damaged by battering from floating debris.
Terrain continuously lower than 1.5 metres (5 feet) above mean sea level may be flooded inland 13 km (8 miles) or more.
Evacuation of low-lying residences within several blocks of the shoreline may be required.
There is also the potential for flooding further inland due to heavy rain.
The information above is provided for guidance only and should not be used to make life or death decisions or decisions relating to property. Anyone in the region who is concerned for their personal safety or property should contact their official national weather agency or warning centre for advice.

    by elainekirk 7/15/2011 12:02:26 PM

  • @elainekirk hmm why don't they like the genpatsu tag?
    by lillymunster 7/15/2011 12:07:16 PM

  • @lilly been buried in my own work all day. I think that article about Fukushima City scrubbing every building and removing soil from every street is a big one. It shows that the local communities are more aware of the dangers to their long term survival and we will see more and more of them chart a course away from the federal government. A very new power dynamic here in Japan. Other than that, just getting ready to batten down the hatches for the typhoon, which is taking a bead on Hiroshima.
    by bo 7/15/2011 12:12:47 PM

  • A friend just called from Tokyo, big EQ
    by bo 7/15/2011 12:21:19 PM

  • @bo it would be interesting to gather up some of the local actions into a story or at least the local actions in Fukushima. I pulled one a few days ago where they set up their own testing lab rather than relying on other sources. There were some other actions around the prefecture or Fukushima city but can't remember them offhand. The whole dynamic of people taking charge in small groups or at the local level I find interesting in light of METI attempting to control information online.

I am working on a bit for the group site on the group of 7.
