505 more cows found shipped after being fed tainted strawFUKUSHIMA, Japan, July 19, Kyodo
More cows were confirmed Monday to have been shipped after being fed rice straw contaminated with radioactive cesium, with 411 from seven farms in Fukushima Prefecture and 24 from a farm in Niigata Prefecture.
Also on Monday, it was confirmed that 70 cows from four farms in Yamagata Prefecture were shipped within the prefecture and to Tokyo after being fed with rice straw suspected of being similarly contaminated. This brought the total number of cows suspected of radioactive contamination to 505 and that of their shipping destinations to eight prefectures.
On Monday, the prefectural government of Fukushima said seven more farms fed their beef cattle the rice straw, while the Niigata prefectural government said it has detected elevated levels of radioactive cesium from straw produced in Miyagi Prefecture and given to cattle at two farms, one of which has already shipped the 24 cows.

@Edano have they not considered the fact that the cows very likely inhaled cesium along with the pigs ( who have been found with cesium but that is being kept quiet until they can find something other than their surroundings to blame) OH no just thought they cant suggest that because the people would add 1 + 1 and get the Truth and then that would cause panic when they realised they ere all in the same situation as those animals
Next research to come out of Japan 'How straw cn be used as a decontaminant as it attracts all the radiation and nothing else gets tainted...unless they eat it'
by elainekirk 7/18/2011 6:40:27 PM

Have there been studies done into how much cesium children pee out as a % of the total internal amount ..no I suppose not ..never mind they can do one now...oh they cant can they they have no idea how much the children have taken in
by elainekirk 7/18/2011 6:44:25 PM

@elainekirk there is a percentage or time frame for the body to clear various isotopes. Edano might have the details. If not we can go data farming.
Do you have any links on the pigs? I should add that to the info I am gathering to do a contamination post.
by lillymunster 7/18/2011 6:49:44 PM

I havent yet just tweets but I am seeing red atm just read a mothers tweets she says that the teachers are calling her bad for questioning school meals and that even taking in plutonium is safe because a prffesor in Tokyo says so and yesterday there wa the farmer apologising fir leaving his straw out it is setting people upon people rather than have tepco take responsibility
the mothers tweets @ Yu_miri_0622
by elainekirk 7/18/2011 6:57:39 PM

@elainekirk have her followed on twitter now. IIRC bringing lunch is not typical in most schools in Japan making this worse. :-( It seems clueless people in the school system is a universal problem. :-)

1.4 How can cesium enter and leave my body?
Stable and radioactive cesium can enter your body from the food you eat or the water you drink, from the air you breathe, or from contact with your skin. When you eat, drink, breathe, or touch things containing cesium compounds that can easily be dissolved in water, cesium enters your blood and is carried to all parts of your body. Cesium is like potassium; it enters cells and helps to maintain a balance of electrical charges between the inside and the outside of cells so that cells can perform tasks that depend on those electrical charges. Cells like muscle cells and nerve cells require changing electrical charges in order to function properly and allow you to think and move.
Once cesium enters your body, your kidneys begin to remove it from the blood; some cesium is quickly released from your body in the urine. A small portion is also released in the feces. Some of the cesium that your body absorbs can remain in your body for weeks or months, but is slowly eliminated from your body through the urine and feces.
www.atsdr.cdc.govCesium tends to concentrate in muscles because of their relatively
large mass. Like potassium, cesium is excreted from the body fairly quickly. In an adult, 10% is excreted
with a biological half-life of 2 days, and the rest leaves the body with a biological half-life of 110 days.
Clearance from the body is somewhat quicker for children and adolescents. This means that if someone is
exposed to radioactive cesium and the source of exposure is removed, much of the cesium will readily clear
the body along the normal pathways for potassium excretion within several months.

@lillymunster yes and them acting as some kind of authority over families is universal too
by elainekirk 7/18/2011 7:09:33 PM

@elainekirk I wonder if the kids being tested recently had higher cesium levels before testing or if what was in their body was newer. Some of these kids could have had much higher levels if what was taken internally was done early in the disaster. It is all just so strange to see the reactions playing out like the school teacher in total denial.

um Edano just evaporated?
by lillymunster 7/18/2011 7:19:54 PM

@elainekirk @lillymunster : this is an earlier post of mine:
lets make a little math: 120 days since the explosions makes 120/8 = 15 half lives.
assuming that there was no additional iodine exposure, the now measured "trace amount" of 0.1 uSv/h sums up to 3276.8 uSv/h, which is far beyond any limit - even for adults.
additionally, you have to calculate the biological half time of iodine, which is about 64 days:
"About 55% of the131I tracer dose are metabolized in humans with a BHL of 64 days (mean, range: 39-122 days) during the organic iodine phase." www.springerlink.com
this means we can conclude a worst case scenario of 4 times 3 mSv/h =12 mSv/h at the time of the explosions. worst case means in this case, that there was only the one exposure during the explosions. so, this is the real meaning of "trace amounts". this is only what's left from the big disaster.
by Edano 7/18/2011 7:20:42 PM

referring to rad iodine in childrens' urine.
by Edano 7/18/2011 7:21:53 PM

@Edano thank you that really spells it out
by elainekirk 7/18/2011 7:24:25 PM

@RadioGuy : yes. but this points to the real problem: if you find "trace amounts" in the body, you have to know exactly where the person has been all the time, and what he has eaten. it is a whole lot of calculation. it is stupid to say: hey, there are only small amounts of iodine in the urine, so no problem. there shouldn't be any.
by Edano 7/18/2011 7:27:11 PM

There was an instance recently of higher iodine that cesium readings in Tokyo sewer testing.

by lillymunster 7/18/2011 7:36:43 PM

@RadioGuy Is there a source that clearly explains why plutonium is always a worry no matter the level? Seems they are getting the same nonsense in Japan.
by lillymunster 7/18/2011 7:40:34 PM

@RadioGuy not scientific risk assessment, more like social Russian roulette.
by lillymunster 7/18/2011 7:44:07 PM

@RadioGuy thanks to both you and Bobby1. I grabbed all of this to add to the pile of food contamination examples. I may try to tie the Los Alamos thing into it also. It shows the contrast of how things can be equally as bizarre in the US
by lillymunster 7/18/2011 7:47:31 PM

@RadioGuy : apart from that, it is a very strong poison.
by Edano 7/18/2011 7:48:31 PM
