  • @smoss I think so too @edano that cover is 1lto 3w so will not cover much roof

  • Typhoon's satellite fix by enhanced infra-red imaging. About 2.33 hours ago as I post this. Very briefly as I have to dash off to work. See the fringes of the typhoon already touching the lower 1/3 of Japan. Thanks. Cheers, @ALL.

  • @elainekirk Will the dimensions of the "covering" fit the SFP at Reactor #3?

I hope some minimal protective measures have been put in place, without depending on overloaded Tepco ... like across the board iodide prophylaxis for immediately vulnerable areas prone to rad debri scatter due to storm, etc.
    by alblee 7/17/2011 10:57:28 PM

  • @smoss : no, it is only for the turbine building.
    by Edano 7/17/2011 11:01:02 PM

  • @alblee : yes, sure. ;)
    by Edano 7/17/2011 11:02:19 PM

  • My guess is they want to cover the hole from the concrete plug section that went through the roof. What is the dimension of the patch panel?
    by lillymunster 7/17/2011 11:06:56 PM

  • @smoss we need @lilly for dimensions of sfp methinks
    by elainekirk 7/17/2011 11:07:54 PM

  • @Edano, judging from satellite animation sequences, it's the prefectures immediately north and northwest of Tohoku Prefecture that are in the path of windblow the moment typhoon winds begin to be felt. Regardless of Tepco physical preemptive measures, these areas need to take action on their own, NOW.
It's all going to start to blow over the next six hours or so at Ground Zero.
    by ALBLEE 7/17/2011 11:09:55 PM

  • @ALBLEE : it's very slow. in three days it might be in tokyo.
    by Edano 7/17/2011 11:11:44 PM

  • @ALBLEE It is morning in Japan. Earlier predicted Tues morning for landfall. Maybe they meant landfall of the core of the hurricane. If they only have about 6 hours and they need to get that panel up and secured down...
    by lillymunster 7/17/2011 11:11:46 PM

  • @all Just thinking outloud: Have they actually been able to do work in the turbine building of #3, or had high radiation kept them out of there as well?
    by smoss 7/17/2011 11:12:27 PM

  • @smoss I think they have been in the turbine building. The reactor building is really high inside.
    by lillymunster 7/17/2011 11:13:49 PM

  • i am quite sure nobody will distribute iodine tablets. everything is safe.

    by RadioGuy 7/17/2011 11:19:31 PM

  • Thanks, @Lillymunster, @Edano. The core could be days away, indeed, but the peripheral winds may just start kicking up by Japan afternoon over nearby Ibaraki, or at least the rainshowers may begin, starting the possible churnup of hot debris that can then get carried by even light wind.
** Doing this on a bumpy ride to work; managed to hijack a mobile tablet for a few seconds from a co-passenger. Cheers.

  • @ALBLEE not good is it :(
    by elainekirk 7/17/2011 11:29:43 PM

  • Thanks, @elainekirk, @RadioGuy. We just have to hope for the best at this stage, and also hope the civil authorities have enough gumption to take self-initiative on behalf of their constituents. Bye for now.

  • Trying to figure out what all we could implement as a tracking system? The weather links, is there a live radar available or one that updates every 15min? The two cameras should give us something usable during the daylight hours and at least to gauge the rain and wind until they get turned off (if they do). Hopefully we get daily updates from the workers, they can give us a better idea what things are like. Other ideas what we could add to tracking?

  • the 'roof' they are putting on is 5m x 16m so if we assume the roof is 5m wide then the white patch is the area the new piece would cover

    by elainekirk 7/18/2011 12:21:18 AM

  • @elainekirk that is the big garage doorway in the corner of the reactor building.
    by lillymunster 7/18/2011 12:25:04 AM

  • @lillymunster ty so we don't know what rad levels are like in the turbine room ...
    by elainekirk 7/18/2011 12:26:30 AM

  • @elainekirk there might be some readings back in reports. I think they took turbine building readings as they were considering sending teams into each.

    by lillymunster 7/18/2011 12:34:54 AM

  • Heck, the size of that hole, it could have the whole RPV in it. ;)
    by RadioGuy 7/18/2011 12:35:16 AM

  • I cannot fathom it at all a heavy block atop rubber over each of those holes would have sealed them faster and much more securely
    by elainekirk 7/18/2011 12:36:03 AM

  • Oh g*d D**&^! TEPCO removed the search feature from their site.
