Please note, when you look at this and then compare with the satellite image, that the eye is not hitting Skikoku, but the notch below it. That will keep it from tacking as hard as they expected.

  • It's the counterclockwise swirl of the wind that claws at the mountains, and that pushes it north. The notch gives it just that much more sea before it takes hold. Bareky different, but they had it coming in dead on the south point of Shikoku, where it would bite fastest.

  • It is 103 degrees up here in SD. The hubby came home and said that Xcel Energy made the hospital kick over to their generators because of all the power consumption in the area. They likely made the other two big regional hospitals do the same. He said they would frequently do this to other big companies in town when it would get hot. So if we don't have enough capacity and it is a non-issue why are the utilities in Japan acting like it is the end of the world if they start to max out on hot days?
    by lillymunster 7/18/2011 10:14:08 PM

  • @lillymunster because the nuke industries need to feel needed ....now shhhh before you cause them panic at the thought of asking people NOT to buy their leccy they will get all apoplexic

  • Very briefly, before I take off for morning exercises...
Good morning from GMT+8. Thanks, @RadioGuy. And the typhoon's configuration may tend to change in a significant way after biting the terrestial land masses of Shikoku and, to its east, the southern peninsular formation of Honshu (where Osaka is generally situated).

  • Hi all! Haven't been around much last two days...noticed this on news round-up...Ugh! ..........Radioactive water in Fukushima poses challenge
The Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company will announce on Tuesday a revised plan to bring the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant under control.

They are expected to say that the first stage of the plan has been almost completed on schedule.

But a system to decontaminate radioactive water, which began operating at the end of last month, is working below the target capacity due to leaks and other problems.

The system's decontamination rate dropped to 37 tons of water per hour at one point, more than 20 percent below the target capacity.

It increased to 39 tons per hour after TEPCO workers released air from the pipes on Friday. They also replaced a hose connecting the tanks to ease water circulation. www3.nhk.or.jp

  • More beef cattle fed irradiated straw

Fukushima and Niigata prefectures have identified more farms that shipped beef cattle that had been fed straw containing radioactive cesium in amounts above the government standard.

Fukushima Prefecture says 7 farms in 6 municipalities fed their cattle straw left outdoors after the March nuclear accident in the prefecture. The straw was found to contain radioactive cesium in amounts up to 520 times the standard.

The farms shipped 411 head of cattle to meat-processing facilities in 5 prefectures including Tokyo from late March to early July.

Fukushima asked local authorities to trace the meat and carry out radiation checks if any was found.

The prefecture also asked all cattle farms in the prefecture to voluntarily refrain from shipping and transferring their stock for the time being.

In Niigata Prefecture, radioactive cesium levels as high as 15 times the government standard were detected in straw given to beef cattle at 2 farms. The straw was from Miyagi Prefecture, which neighbors Fukushima.

One of the farms has shipped 24 head of cattle.

Investigators have found that a total of 578 head of cattle have been shipped after being fed contaminated straw. The amount of contaminated meat found to have been distributed to markets across the country is expected to rise.

  • As to the stable situation, I wish I knew Japanese. The distinction of language may be subtle and easily lost in translation. I would be willing to accept "the reactor temps have been stabilized" which is progress, but a far cry from "stable".
by Peter Melzer 7/18/2011 11:31:31 PM

  • @Peter Agreed...but have we seen temps for anything lately? Specifically SFP 4? I'm not even convinced the temps have been stabilized, but I acknowledge that they could be.
