  • Common pool steaming 10pmJST after power outage

    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 7:14:05 PM

  • @lilly: dont want to understate (steam is sign of happening something in common pool) but lightening now could be reflecting daylight/sunrising coming soon in the background, or whatelse?
    by Puc 7/23/2011 7:40:49 PM

  • @Puc The steam one was taken at 10pm JST
Oh there are worklights down by the common pool so yes they are reflecting making it look a bit worse.
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 7:41:24 PM

  • Is that an artifact of the stream or is the cloud in front of thecrane. So steam, from...the vent stack? Common pool drift?
    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 8:34:53 PM

  • teppycam
    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 8:34:58 PM

  • @RadioGuy Looks to me like a narrow band of condensation on the camera itself, or on whatever see-through shield the cam's recording behind. There's usually steam from 3 & 4 and often from the direction of the common fuel pool too. I don't think the vent stack's steaming.
    by es 7/23/2011 8:42:30 PM

  • That's what I'm guessing. it never changes beyond pixel drift.

  • China's high-speed train derails

China's Xinhua news agency says two high-speed trains collided on Saturday in the eastern province of Zhejiang, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 100 others.

Xinhua says the collision occurred at a little before 9:00 PM, local time, in Wenzhou. It says 6 coaches derailed, with four of them falling off a bridge. One of the trains was travelling from Hangzhou for Fuzhou in Fujian province. The other left Beijing in the morning and was en route to Fuzhou.

The cause of the accident is still unknown. Some local media are quoting a passenger as saying that one train was struck by lightning before the accident. The train stopped for 10 minutes, resumed running, then was rammed from behind by another train when it made a sudden stop again.
Xinhua quoted an eyewitness as saying that the coaches fell from a height of 20 or 30 meters and rescuers are pulling passengers from the carriages.

Footage aired by China Central Television shows one of the coaches leaning against the bridge in an almost upright position and the other lying on the ground upside down.

  • Typhoon-leftover rain/wind cooling accounts for that. Any report of how much the rain pushed the water levels up?
    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 9:41:17 PM

  • @Edano yeah you mean like when the coolng system starts cooling it overheats and trips leaving the water to overheat while they cool the equipment then they cool the water back down which overheats the equipment ,.,.,.,.,.

  • TBS shows #4 belching white steam from right hand side as usual. Is that the SFP the workers twittered that rises above 100 degrees whenever they stop adding water?
    by Cat 7/23/2011 10:49:57 PM

  • @Cat yes, the #4 sfp is what the workers mentioned goes to 100 when they stop adding water. Off to go peek at TBS
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 10:53:35 PM

  • #4 is steaming a bit. There is a new crane over by 4. Anyone know what it is doing?
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 10:55:42 PM

  • Whenever there is a clear night #4 is usually spewing steam. I notice that even when lots of steam visible on TBS cam it is usually obscured by distance and cloud background on the TEP cam.
    by Cat 7/23/2011 10:58:43 PM

  • @lillymunster yes just sort or dribbling now. How bad is that steam?
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:01:12 PM

  • @Cat what it is putting out now is pretty tame by comparison. They have been having multiple problems. They said they can't keep it cool just pouring water in and need a recirculating cooler system. When they inspected to install one the pipes are all destroyed. So then they lowered the water level on an already over hot pool to access some pipe connections. That of course made it run hot. I have not checked to see if they are back up to a higher level of water. 4 is such a problem because it has a fresh load of fuel in it. They really need to make a way to empty the spent fuel pools now, not in 3 years.
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:04:13 PM

  • I checked today's plant parameters and #4 SFP is up to 6650mm up from the 600mm it was a week or so ago when people were looking at the low levels. #4 at 84c as of the last report
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:11:04 PM

  • @lillymunster . Yes I have seen them steaming so much they dissapear in their own fug. I have been wondering how it takes 3 years to remove the rods from a pool. They really need to get them somewhere they can cool them properly. Why would it take so long?
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:12:04 PM

  • Did anyone discover why they were so desperate to cover #2? turbine building before the storm?
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:13:54 PM

  • @Cat This was TEPCO's roadmap. They may have issue removing the fresh load of fuel but the old fuel shouldn't be so volatile they can't move it. One problem is they will have to remove rubble or building parts to get at the pools. I would think dealing with that is more important than putting a tent on 4.
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:15:16 PM

  • @Cat They put the cover on #3 to cover the huge hole. We tried asking some of the workers if they knew what made the hole and none did. The turbine building has high radiation so they have not been sending people in. They did have to send workers in to go on the roof and bolt down the panels on the roof and they all got a big dose of radiation.
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:16:55 PM

  • @lillymunster. I just wondered how much shit is carried by the steam of a boiling fuel pool.
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:16:57 PM

  • @Cat quite a bit from what people have estimated. They take readings above the pools but rarely make it public or can't get the equipment to work. There is still a billion bq being released into the air daily per TEPCO
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:18:42 PM

  • @lillymunster Shouldn't take that long to move all that rubble with their nice big cranes. I know they've got to be careful not to do more damage.
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:19:36 PM

  • @cat: the static situation of #4 SFP is very unstable, it`s risky to move anything around #4 SFP. Its like playing the pick-up-stick game, but some of the sticks are radioactive rods...
    by Puc 7/23/2011 11:19:41 PM

  • @Cat 4 I am not sure how they will move the last of the roof edge and the overhead crane to get casks down in. They usually use the refueling crane to put fuel in a cask and the overhead crane to pull the cask in and out. I think they should be able to rig something but have to remove the junk first. This is what casks look like www.wnti.co.uk

    by lillymunster via Wnti.co.uk 7/23/2011 11:21:08 PM

  • I know, but still - 3 years!
    by Cat 7/23/2011 11:21:11 PM

  • PUC brings up a good point they thought rods were thrown out of 4 but they actually had workers up in that area recently so I have to wonder of the fuel bits were actually from #3 after all.
    by lillymunster 7/23/2011 11:22:03 PM

  • @Cat The workers were complaining about the stupidity of this also. I am hoping someone makes TEPCO rethink this. I would consider removing that fuel far more important than putting up tents.
