    by Edano 7/23/2011 12:47:23 PM

  • something has to be shifted in the way the world transports power, the power delivery systems around the globe are in shambles and are underrated
for the amount of power they are trying to load on

  • in USA no one wants to take the lead on rebuilding distribution system which are strained
    by dean 7/23/2011 12:50:53 PM

  • utility companies come out with a plan.. if you let us shed your power during prime times we will lower your rate, they install special meters that allow them to do it .... like power shedding or power shaving... remember in japan they said... power outages in some controlled way..
    by dean 7/23/2011 12:52:17 PM

  • @dean : lot of electricity gets lost in power lines. the energy of the heated cooling water is just lost without using it. i think the best is decentralization. lots of solar cells and windmills. i do not favour the big solar and wind parks. they are in the same hands again.
    by Edano 7/23/2011 12:52:45 PM

  • agree.. it is time to change the paradigm on power, how we generate it etc.

  • Cause of Fukushima blackout identified

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says the interruption on Friday of a system that cools one of the spent fuel pools was caused by the incorrect set-up of a circuit breaker.

A device that handles the transmission of power to reactors 3 and 4 malfunctioned shortly after 7 AM on Friday, shutting down the cooling system for the fuel pool of unit 3 as well as the water decontamination system.

Although the pool water temperature did not rise, it took about 8 and a half hours to put all the equipment back online.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said on Saturday that a circuit breaker had been mistakenly set up at one-third of the correct level, causing it to shut down prematurely.

  • An Unbelievable Share Of Donations To Japan's Liberal Democratic Party Came From The Power Industry
Japan's power companies have quite a cozy relationship with one of the country's political parties. Kyodo News reported today that 72% of donations made by individuals to the Liberal Democratic Party in 2009 came from acting and former executives of power companies.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the owners of the failed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contributed over 14 million yen, one third of that money.
The LDP strongly supported nuclear power by subsidizing plant construction and by deregulating the energy sector in 2000.

  • @Edano I woke up this morning in deep sympathy with The Onion, who somehow have to come up with headlines to top this: TEPCO to eliminate gangsters from nuclear projects
    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 4:14:17 PM

  • @es Thanks for that TEPPYcam link. That's the first one I've been able to get running under linux. I previously had to open a Windoze virtual machine and run it in that. I'd never seen the mms link or I'd have pulled that up in VLC, too.

    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 4:24:35 PM

  • @RadioGuy I think the words gangsters and nuclear projects should not be in the same sentence but maybe it's just me.
    by joniver 7/23/2011 4:24:54 PM

  • We should make a list. Things that should never be in the same sentence with nuclear power plant. We have solid votes on sandbags and gangsters. I'll add:
    politics
    bribe
    deregulation
    PROFIT!
And while it's not one word, as a concept I'd add:
    wrist-slap fines.
    by RadioGuy 7/23/2011 4:31:59 PM

  • Profit and safety all too often turn out to be mutually exclusive terms.
