Tropical Storm 11W (Muifa), # 3; Where you bound, brother?
    By Dave Ornauer
    Published: July 29, 2011

3:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, Japan time: Where, oh, where is Tropical Storm Muifa bound? Central Japan? Kyushu? Okinawa?
“That’s the $50 million question,” said Ted Danecki of Kadena Air Base’s 18th Wing Weather Flight.
The 11th numbered storm of the season continues to build strength as it spins more than 1,000 miles to Okinawa’s south-southeast. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts Muifa over the next few days to take a zig-zag approach north, a “complex steering pattern involving many components.
Forecast models have Muifa all over the lot, varying by as much as 350 miles, as so many things can change over the course of five days that can influence Muifa in several directions. One model projects Muifa to bulldoze Okinawa, while others have it passing well to the east and rumbling toward Kyushu or elsewhere in Japan.
What is certain, according to the latest JTWC warning, is that Muifa should be some 350 miles east-southeast of Kadena at 9 a.m. Wednesday, packing sustained 92-mph winds and 115-mph gusts at its center.

  • @Majj have they started the evacuations? or is there a more imminent risk than the storm?
    by elainekirk 7/29/2011 11:12:59 PM

  • @elainekirk The Muifa has no influence on Japan. Not yet...

  • @Majj what is causing them to evac?
    by elainekirk 7/29/2011 11:26:54 PM

  • @Elaine I think there's a storm between South Korea and the west coast of Japan that's causing all the rain in both countries...especially in Korea and the western side of Japan into the mountains of Fuku.

  • @Elaine Thanks! I thought I had heard something about the Korean landslides. I was surprised to hear about the torrential rain in western Japan until I remembered the Korean report. Weather systems in the pacific seem to hit Japan even when they swing further west. Not good for Fuku.

  • @RadioGuy There is a fissure by 4 and another by 1. It was like there was a fissure on either end of the row of reactors. So far have not found any photos of fissure between 2-3.

  • 1 killed, 5 missing in torrential rain in northeastern Japan

    TOKYO, July 30, Kyodo

One man has been killed, five others missing and nearly 400,000 people have been asked to evacuate in Niigata and Fukushima prefectures after torrential rain hammered the northeast region of Japan overnight, authorities said Saturday.

Many spots logged record high rainfall, causing floods and landslides, and stranding small communities. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that a rain front will bring more heavy rainfall later Saturday.

Total rainfall over a 24-hour period until 5 a.m. Saturday topped 500 millimeters at an area in Niigata on the coast of the Sea of Japan and exceeded 500 at a spot in Fukushima, east of Niigata, according to the agency. english.kyodonews.jp
