  • Good morning all. Thanks for the kind thoughts @elainekirk, it has hardly rained here in Hiroshima so there is no problem. Just intensely hot and humid here. Sad to hear about the problems up in the mountains.

  • @LM hi LM ty link up am going to bed now @bo you were silent too long glad to hear you are ok I will see you after sleeping 3.30 a.m. must retire :)

  • @Bo Hi! Any word on testing of other meats beside beef? I've been wondering when that would hit the fan.
    by LM 7/30/2011 2:25:26 AM

  • Nite Elaine! You are most welcome.

  • Thanks elaine and good night. I've been busy teaching the Hiroshima & Peace course here so have been out of my office for a few days. And will be all next week. @LM I've heard that there have been a lot of stories in the press about the food situation, but I have not heard people talking too much about specific findings.
    by bo 7/30/2011 2:38:40 AM

  • @bo the big one I saw today was the garden compost.
    by lillymunster 7/30/2011 2:40:14 AM

  • @lilly yeah I saw that too. I am hearing radio and tv stories constantly about Fukushima, but in Japanese so I don't understand the specifics. But that wasn't the case 2-3 months ago. It is very clearly becoming the main story every day in the press.
    by bo 7/30/2011 2:41:19 AM

  • Thanks @Bo. I really hope they start checking other meats soon or they'll be chasing contamination indefinitely. Glad the weather is at least not raining where you are. Curiosity...what kinds of questions are the young people asking at your seminar?
    by LM 7/30/2011 2:46:52 AM

  • @bo The story of NISA colluding with the power companies to fake public support seemed to get traction this morning here.
    by lillymunster 7/30/2011 2:48:28 AM

  • @LM well a lot of what I teach is about the history of nuclear weapons. There has been some strong debate about whether countries with nuclear weapons have the right to dictate to others that they can't (i.e. US and Iran). Yesterday we did a session about Fukushima, and we asked all the students (about 25 Japanese and about 30 foreigners) about what their thoughts were. Most of the foreigners reported that their families had been apprehensive about them coming to Japan. Almost all of the Japanese students said that they didn't think that it would affect them since Fukushima is so far away from Hiroshima.
    by bo 7/30/2011 2:50:18 AM

  • @lilly do you mean in the Japanese press or international?

  • @lilly good! Thanks.
    by bo 7/30/2011 2:51:37 AM

  • @bo NHK,Kyodo and Asahi Shimbun all had versions or multiple stories on it.
    by lillymunster 7/30/2011 2:52:13 AM

  • The press is really fixing on different aspects of the situation. It can only increase.
    by bo 7/30/2011 2:52:37 AM

  • @bo I hope the collusion story sticks around for a while. When the govt. agency and the power companies are pretty much caught red handed lying to the public it should cause some change.
    by lillymunster 7/30/2011 2:53:48 AM

  • @Bo That's interesting. I guess it's good that foreigners are at least thinking about what's going on.
    by LM 7/30/2011 2:55:41 AM

  • This next week is the anniversary of the bombing here. Already there are lots of events going on and lots of people coming to town from all over Japan and all over the world. There are a lot of events and talks about Fukushima. The anniversary is always a big event on TV here with lots of coverage, so expect this week to bring a larger amount of radiation focused articles here in Japan, and in the international press too. I've already been contacted by an Israeli news station that is doing a documentary about Hiroshima and Fukushima. Probably a lot of the annual HIroshima coverage will be like that.

  • @Lilly @bo The story about NISA and Kyushu Electric could do a lot of damage to the nuke industry in Japan. I have my fingers crossed!
    by LM 7/30/2011 3:01:10 AM

  • @LM So far there is a total of 7 EPCO's caught in it. So it was much wider than just Kyushu
    by lillymunster 7/30/2011 3:02:34 AM

  • @Lilly I guess the more the merrier...If the corruption is that widespread you'd think people would stand up and take notice.
    by LM 7/30/2011 3:04:54 AM

  • One thing that all of the Japanese students did agree on was that they all felt that they had not been receiving accurate or sufficient information. I think this feeling must be almost universal here by now.

  • that is really ...
    by elainekirk 7/30/2011 9:29:59 AM

  • G'morning @elainekirk. Nice, huh?
If the earlier landslide that took out that power line is related to the newly discovered fault line then I'm not surprised there's concern for Unit's 5 & 6 - I was looking at some google map images of Dai-ichi taken in March, and they show just how close that March landslide came to Units 5 & 6, I make it a couple of hundred meters at most: maps.google.com
    by es 7/30/2011 9:55:29 AM

  • @es yes thats what I thought but I was just going from the power lines seeing it in reality makes it much more worrisome :(
    by elainekirk 7/30/2011 10:04:03 AM

  • @elainekirk Hopefully steps have been taken to prevent further land slippage in that area, and/or to stop the earth flowing right on down to the reactor buildings next time.
    by es 7/30/2011 10:08:08 AM

  • @es well I went through the tepco meti docs last night and I can only find the power lines being repaired no action was taken to lessen the impact of further landslip nor did meti ask them to take any which is strange because landslip risks featured in tepco 2010 annual report
    by elainekirk 7/30/2011 10:15:10 AM

  • @elainekirk Hmm. If they're a common occurance then might we expect TEPCO to have some standard measures they'd normally take to mitigate against landslides on their property?

  • That was a link to a new page.
    by AustralianCannonball 7/30/2011 10:26:48 AM

  • @es the fact they now have the fault line with a half metre slip on the sea side and the landslide area makes it a dicky situation that they should have loads of docs covering but there is nothing
    by elainekirk 7/30/2011 10:32:38 AM

  • @AustralianCannonball they may give more comprehensive replies later those are just acknowledgements we can hope , great work :)
