  • They mine low radation steel from WW1 German Battleships scuttled in Scapa Flow to get clean pre-1945 steel. Quate from Wiki "Minor salvage is still carried out to recover small pieces of steel. This low-background steel is used in the manufacture of radiation-sensitive devices, such as Geiger counters, as it is not contaminated with radioisotopes, it having been produced prior to any chance of nuclear contamination" en.wikipedia.org I wonder if they will use/recycle steel from the SF Bay Bridge (pre-1945)
    by RonD 8/3/2011 5:49:44 PM

  • @RonD interesting bit of trivia. So what do we do when we run out of clean steel?

So if we have on average a nuclear disaster of epic proportion every 25 years how long would it take to make the whole place uninhabitable.

  • @lillymunster @RonD the truth is already scary today.
    by Edano 8/3/2011 5:56:31 PM

  • @lillymunster @Edano I saw this a long time ago in the SF paper. Not sure if I want glow in the dark forks and knives. www.sfgate.com "When you get in your car or use a spoon, you don't want to have to think about whether it's contaminated with radioactivity or not," said Tom Danjczek, president of the national Steel Manufacturers Association, who noted that about half the steel currently used in this country was made from recycled scrap.

  • @Edano ew, yea I can see where that could be a problem. I suppose there really isn't a way to purify steel
    by lillymunster 8/3/2011 6:07:43 PM

  • if you have radioactive steel in your leg for some 20 years, this adds up to a huge internal contamination ..... hmmmmmm
    by Edano 8/3/2011 6:11:05 PM

  • even with "not detectable" residious radiation this can lead to severe problems.
    by Edano 8/3/2011 6:13:06 PM

  • @Edano Not sure of the details, but I think this is a problem when physicists are doing ultra sensitive measurements looking for neutrinos etc and need to shield from other sources of radiation. Not sure if normal "clean" steel would cause a problem but you probably don't want to use scrap steel from Fukushima Daiichi for medical applications. But FukuSteel will be cheap.
    by RonD 8/3/2011 6:13:48 PM

  • Ban-the-bomb convention opens in Hiroshima

A Japanese anti-nuclear organization has opened an annual international conference in Hiroshima, ahead of the 66th anniversary of the bombing of the city on August 6th. At the top of this year's agenda are proposals to scrap nuclear power generation following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Gensuikyo, or the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, opened a four-day meeting on Wednesday.

In an opening speech, the head of the Council, Shoji Sawada, criticized the Japanese government for promoting nuclear power generation in line with US nuclear policy, by creating a groundless safety myth.
He called on governments around the globe to give up dependency on nuclear power generation.

Then an atomic-bomb survivor who experienced the bombing when she was a child gave a speech. She told the audience that she was worried about the possible impact of radiation on her baby daughter and talked about how she later lost her daughter to cancer.

The woman said atomic-bomb survivors are still suffering physically and mentally from the impact of the bombing, 66 years later.

During the conference in Hiroshima, the participants plan to discuss nuclear disarmament, nuclear power generation and the effects of radiation.

After Hiroshima, the Council is scheduled to hold another meeting in Nagasaki.

Another ban-the-nuclear-bomb organization in Japan, the Japan Congress against A- and H- Bombs will also meet in both cities.

  • @lillymunster is he a part of the citizens movement do you think?
    by elainekirk 8/3/2011 8:20:24 PM

  • @elainekirk he had multiple posts of taking readings or having a reading relayed to him and a couple of posts and retweets about the govt. screwing up on the issue. He is either doing readings himself or for one of the groups. There seems to be so many random people with detectors. It really is showing how widespread things are. It is concerning how many are from Chiba.
