  • Here's a report mentioning how strong it was in the county of Maryland that I live in, sounds totally like my experience : www.youtube.com The report goes on to say it's the strongest eq in Virginia since 1897.

    FOLLOWING VIRGININIA EARTHQUAKE
    by elainekirk 8/23/2011 9:28:41 PM

  • @Edano , the remaining steam from the main steam line is led directly into the main condenser, circumventing the electricity-generating turbine. But there are other points were steam is condensed and water is cooled, producing excess steam.

  • At least North Anna isn't a Mk.1 BWR!

  • @hudebnik That was the first thing I looked up. :-)
    by lillymunster 8/23/2011 9:30:51 PM

  • I put a condensed update on the group page since there has been enough notable events today.

  • @Ian In that video the Washington Monument looks tilted but it could be the angle.

    by lillymunster 8/23/2011 9:35:28 PM

  • @joniver, I see that realclearpolitics.com report saying there are reports that it's tilting. But the CNN report they link to doesn't say that. I expect if it was tilting, it would have fallen already. I can't imagine it would be designed to sustain a tilt. Curious though because I doubt it was build to withstand an earthquake.
    by Ian 8/23/2011 9:36:06 PM

  • @lillymunster oh thats good to know, I was worried it was radiation causing it
    by elainekirk 8/23/2011 9:36:12 PM

  • @Ian the lean was really subtle I wish I could find the photo.
    by lillymunster 8/23/2011 9:36:59 PM

  • @elainekirk lol
    by RadioGuy 8/23/2011 9:37:05 PM

  • @Ian CNN says there are loose stones. See my post down below.
    by joniver 8/23/2011 9:37:20 PM

  • @joniver & lilly, I bet it would be one of the first things to fall, a big ol' stack of stones.
    by Ian 8/23/2011 9:39:12 PM

  • @Ian the walls were much thicker in the old builds though and if it is double wall with rubble fill it will probably flex better than something like erm pipes in a nuke plant
    by elainekirk 8/23/2011 9:41:26 PM

  • Here's a report saying "The Washington Monument Is Almost Certainly Not Leaning"
    www.theatlanticwire.com
    by Ian 8/23/2011 9:42:13 PM

  • @Ian almost certainly - two words that should never appear together in the same sentence
    by elainekirk 8/23/2011 9:43:27 PM

  • @elainekirk, lol! We're almost certain things are safe!

    How the earthquake impacted landmarks
    by elainekirk 8/23/2011 9:48:02 PM

  • @elainekirk, couple key points : The National Cathedral : "It looks like three of the pinnacles have broken off the central tower." The Smithsonian Institution Building "has cracks in the interior walls due to the earthquake." It was CNN that also reported the loosened stones as the
    Wash Monument.

  • bo, we had a tiny taste of what you face in Japan almost daily, a 5.8 earthquake. Largest centered in Virginia since 1897! One or two NPPs in Virginia on backup diesel power. Six or more reports "unusual events.
    "
    by Ian 8/23/2011 10:05:14 PM

  • Nice, nice Ian. Course the last thing this should do is force anyone to rethink existing
    safety protocols.
