  • time for me to go to gym... will return
    by dean 10/1/2011 2:10:49 PM

  • @elainekirk wow. looks like high rad debris. i would like to know what is written on the green labels...
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:11:32 PM

  • @Edano, but 370,000 =/= 5,200,000. Remember the output of Fuku was doubled by NISA, but I think it still wont beat Chernobyl. "770,000 terabecquerels from March 11 to March 16, the first five days after the accident." articles.cnn.com
    by Ian 10/1/2011 2:11:39 PM

  • one thing we must consider,,, I wonder how much rain fall has been measured since the accident, probably a large amount and that is all "uncontrolled" water feed into the reactor and surrounding areas and potentially a source of water that eventually reaches the corium
    by dean 10/1/2011 2:12:31 PM

  • @elainekirk They have it blocked off with those barriers to the right. It looks like something nasty. Is there a date or a title with the photo?
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:13:22 PM

  • the debris seems to have sort of wheels. what are we missing from #3 ???
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:14:48 PM

  • nearly looks like a big squeezed "buggy" for children.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:16:50 PM

  • @Edano I wish they had a larger version of that picture!. What would be purple?
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:16:53 PM

  • @Edano yes. The purple is throwing me. Almost looks like a couple of industrial wheels or round black objects and maybe something cast aluminum plus the steamy bit.
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:17:52 PM

  • and a yellow "sticky" on a plastic tank.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:18:42 PM

  • many wheels in different sizes. parts of a crane ?
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:20:01 PM

  • be back later
    by dean 10/1/2011 2:20:52 PM

  • there's a black pipe looking like the handle of an umbrella.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:21:40 PM

  • be back later
    by Edano 10/1/2011 2:22:53 PM

  • It would be good to figure where this parking lot is, I'd think lots would be pretty far from the Units, and so would seem to be too far away for China-syndrome steam. There's also a hole in the ground to the left of the apparent patch of steam, but no steam comes from it.
    by Ian 10/1/2011 2:27:28 PM

  • @lillymunster it is from todays photo dump on the Japanese site this is the translate of the link
    Grass-week vicinities (dust operating conditions)
(as of late September, summarized 23 years of shadow)
    www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 10/1/2011 2:32:12 PM

  • @Ian Judging by the tree line and outbuilding behind the trees it is at least outside of the "bowl" area the reactors sit in.
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:32:37 PM

  • @elainekirk Hrm. Steaming chunk in the grass away from the reactors 6+ months later. That really IS odd. They have it blocked off so it must be emitting rads
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:33:31 PM

  • Off to the farmers market!
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 2:59:30 PM

  • @Lilly and hello to all
    I found a link to MEXT maps(29.11.2011, Japanese): radioactivity.mext.go.jp

    from this blog-side: allegedlyapparent.wordpress.com

    and a single picture on : ajw.asahi.com
    by Vivre 10/1/2011 3:09:56 PM

  • I feel the need to post this, but being unsure if it's already known or redundant.
Last night I came across scoop.it again but only then realized it's a customizable News-Collector (if you have an account).
Using the topic-search-option: www.scoop.it I came across various existing collections which I find worth regarding (and maybe some to keep) for current news or when searching older 'stuff'. Some finds:

Mapping & participating: Fukushima radiation maps : www.scoop.it
    RadiationAlerts.org : www.scoop.it
Fukushima and aftermath: issues about the radiation level : www.scoop.it

  • @Vivre, thanks! Via that scoop I just found the cesium maps Elaine and I were looking for yesterday, radioactivity.mext.go.jp The bug is they're excluded from the Mext's English collection.
    by Ian 10/1/2011 4:29:18 PM

  • the photo dump has now published on the English site www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 10/1/2011 5:20:59 PM

  • by Edano via Dwqovw6qi0vie.cloudfront.net 10/1/2011 5:32:59 PM

  • @Edano, we've seen a number of hot spots in Chiba revealed on youtube, but to my awareness none in Gunma even as it looks to've taken much more fallout.
    by Ian 10/1/2011 5:44:06 PM

  • I've found the parking lot, if only I could get a Google maps url that works. It's on the campus NNW of Unit 1 and has a spat of trees along an edge facing the ocean.
    by Ian 10/1/2011 6:16:27 PM

  • @Ian past latitude/longitude.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 6:25:17 PM

  • @Ian does this help you any? cryptome.org
    by Liz 10/1/2011 6:25:21 PM

  • 37°25′17″N 141°1′57″E that works in google earth
    by elainekirk 10/1/2011 7:06:56 PM

  • hmm looks different. no diagonal stripes.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:22:00 PM

  • @Edano I am spinning all over here I am determined to find the spot having great fun
    by elainekirk 10/1/2011 7:33:02 PM

  • @elainekirk i have not found it. :(
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:33:49 PM

  • back for a bit
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:33:53 PM

  • @Ian Ian there are some really high spots in Gunma. Let me go dig up the map etc. It is somewhere in the group website
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:34:59 PM

  • Here with map and links to govt. source houseoffoust.com
    Gunma radiation
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:35:27 PM

  • @lillymunster the map is nearly the same.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:36:36 PM

  • @Edano jumping in part way though the conversation. Thought looking for radiation levels in Gunma?
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:37:09 PM

  • @lillymunster yesyes, there is a similar map below, 13 posts down. :)
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:38:34 PM

  • Ah, they just edited it differently. Does look like the same map with Chiba half cut off.
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:39:20 PM

  • The one vivre posted is what I was looking for this morning
    by lillymunster 10/1/2011 7:39:53 PM

  • "The highest levels in Gunma were 300,000 becquerels per square meter. The evacuation level at Chernobyl was 37,000 becquerels."
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:40:02 PM

  • @lillymunster, the map I found noted below, that Elaine and I looked for yesterday, shows even more articulated higher zones in Gunma.
    by Ian 10/1/2011 7:40:10 PM

  • i find it somewhat suprising that the contamination is so high south west of fuku. looks even worse than north.
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:41:27 PM

  • so they did not measure radiation in niigata and nagano ? :(
    by Edano 10/1/2011 7:42:33 PM

  • Check this out, first time I've seen a news report covering the important finding that the radiation-swath across Japan was caused by rain fallout washout on the evening of March 15 : ajw.asahi.com
