  • @lilly you never cease to amaze me.. well done
    by dean 10/7/2011 12:58:27 PM

  • @dean thanks, let me know if it works OK. Uploading a zipped copy now, it didn't compress the file much though so still might be a slow download.

  • I opened the first one, not the big one and am trying searches now... it works great and I can highlight and copy to transfer to a word document... YOUR HIRED

  • One thing I am going to lobby for is a change in function of the NRC with the intent of splitting the regulatory branch off from the branch that reviews all exemptions to NRC rules and guidelines and all requests concerning extending NPP life or fuel system life limits.
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:11:57 PM

  • @dean like a special office that only deals with that?
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 1:14:00 PM

  • in addition, establish strict guidelines to control the sale of NPP's that are within 5 years from their lifetime limit (utility companies now want to dump those old plants to new investors who will bleed out the profits until the plant dies)
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:14:26 PM

  • yes @ lilly.... a regulatory commission and an independant commision that reviews those kinds of things and approves any extensions, exemptions etc.
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:15:21 PM

  • I don't like the regulators, who are charged with enforcing operation according to regulations established, turning their hats around and declaring exemptions to those regulations to keep plants running or extending operations
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:16:42 PM

  • REGULATION.....OPERATIONS.....ENFORCEMENT....
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:17:54 PM

  • @lillymunster , I have read irockhoppy's link. The question remains what copies Prof. Kodama meant. As you can glean from the wiki on chromosome 7 en.wikipedia.org(human) , deletions of genes, notably the one that encodes the protein CLIP2 en.wikipedia.org play an important role in children with Williams Syndrome. By contrast, hoppy's study seems to indicate duplication of genes like described here: louisville.edu . Genes can be represented in multiple copies on a chromosome. Having more copies than usual may lead to overexpression of the synthesized protein and can cause disorders and diseases. Note in the study hoppers cites only a third of the children with thyroid cancer who had been exposed to low level radiation showed signs of such overexpression. Thus, the overexpression does not represent a universal indicator.

  • now let me get my red pen and start splitting this up..

    by dean 10/7/2011 1:29:44 PM

  • @Peter If it is not a universal indicator is it a "sign" that can be used with other factors to create a percentage of probability? I know there are tests for types of arthritis that look for a genetic marker. They don't say 100% you will develop that arthritis but your more likely

  • @dean something else I have seen cited as conflict of interest at the NRC and IAEA is both have in their mandates to promote commercial nuclear power generation. I think that has to be removed from both agencies. Industry promotion belongs in economic development. You can't regulate an industry your promoting
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 1:33:12 PM

  • @Liz I think that had to do with the watering they were doing. Cut them down to lower the fire risk. That part of Japan seems to be similar to northern CA. Fire becomes a big problem over the winter before it snows.
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 1:34:23 PM

  • @Lilly that is true and also.. the pressure induced to streamline and speed up the review and approval process or take short cuts to allow construction to start so the utility companies can reep the benefits from huge bonus incentives
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:37:30 PM

  • @dean I noticed that way back when N Anna was built. It seemed very odd to allow construction to begin before all approvals were done. They would never allow that in the regular construction industry.

  • @dean , I have been in science for a while and, in case of ignorance and doubt, always ask my wife.

  • @lillymunster , as to North Anna, I was trying to locate a transcript of last Monday's meeting, but could find any.

  • @dean the expedition itself of the industry magazine?
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 1:50:48 PM

  • I would think the expedition perhaps the university in lead
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:54:40 PM

  • QIAGEN N.V., www.qiagen.com is helping with the project

The expedition team consists of biologists from the University of South Carolina in the U.S., the University of Paris-Sud in France, and the University of Tokyo, Fukushima University, and Nagasaki University in Japan. The University of South Carolina and University of Paris-Sud also have been leading an international research initiative started in 2000 to assess the long-term ecological and health consequences of radioactive contaminants from Chernobyl.

South Carolina or the Paris uni might have a page for all these research activities

  • I am looking on UNIV of SC now and will send an email
    by dean 10/7/2011 1:58:40 PM

  • @dean , thanks dean. Principally I support such research. The more we know about the effects of low-level radiation, the better. Unfortunately, the local guy they put in charge screwed up with his "keep smiling" pronouncements, and the study began much too late. If they had doled out film badges to the populace right after the earthquake/tsunami, we would have a valid record for everybody. I am quite in favor of film badges, because they are failsafe. Reading them once a month would have been sufficient. How difficult can this be? But these guys could not even get their emergency plans going. They have got so many nuclear power plants in this country and so many earthquakes and tsunamis. The lack of preparedness still amazes me. I am reading on the seismic evaluations now. I must say they know a lot about seismics. But somewhere in the system there must have been a hustler whispering in everybody's ear don't worry we have got it all under wraps. The NRC meeting begins!

  • Doing more introductions of various NRC technical and region staff on the meeting.
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 2:16:11 PM

  • Today's meeting will determine to accept or reject the petition. The petition asks to revoke all GE BWR reactor licenses. NRC says the power plant owners will not be part of this review process. Beyond Nuclear et al are the petitioners
    by lillymunster 10/7/2011 2:17:26 PM

  • 8000 people signed on as co-petitioners of Beyond Nuclear's petition.

Fundamentally flawed pressure suppression containment concerns. NRC rejects this due to NRC reactor changes
