  • @Edano going to run with the Belgium story in the morning. I think Majj has a good point, the countries not after nuclear weapons are dumping nuclear power quite fast. The US shouldn't need nuclear power, we have quite the surplus of weapons materials and it isn't like they have a short shelf life.

  • @Edano the stories in the last week that Japan had a nuke program in the 60's and see nuclear power as an acceptable way to be a nuclear military power without really being one. I can understand it in a way, they are in the same neighborhood as Russia, China and North Korea. I would still rather see everyone not have nukes. It is an insane game.

    Hanford, WA Tests Find
    Plutonium In Fish,
    Mulberry Trees
    6-17-5

SEATTLE (ENS) - Radioactive contamination in public areas surrounding the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Washington is higher and more geographically widespread than previously thought, according to a report today from a government watchdog group and a chemical data firm.

The Government Accountability Project (GAP) and Boston Chemical Data Corporation issued a study that includes the first reports of plutonium in clams and fish in the Columbia River.

The report includes evidence that radiation levels in mulberry trees are higher than previously reported, and that strontium-90 has entered the ecosystem in high levels.

"This is hard evidence that points to past Department of Energy reports as being inadequate to protect the people of southwest Washington and northern Oregon," said Tom Carpenter, GAP Nuclear Oversight Campaign Director.

The data collection and written report was completed by Marco Kaltofen, a registered professional engineer and environmental scientist with more than 19 years of experience in environmental investigations. He is the president of Boston Chemical Data, a corporation specializing in environmental investigations. The company is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Samples were analyzed by Pace Analytical Services, Inc. of Madison, Pennsylvania and PASC/Maxxam of Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

The report, "Citizens Monitoring of Columbia River Radionuclides," was peer reviewed by a retired Hanford scientist and reviewed by the Oregon Office of Energy.

  • Marco Kaltofen is the same fellow with the fukushima / seattle / boston air filter study at WPI. Rense.com rings all sorts of 9-11 conspiracy theory press alarms, but I can't find much fault in his data if he's all put it into footnotes like a good researcher, he does seem to come from an envionmentalist agenda background.

  • Here's one chart from that tepco worker exposure document. It does show a big decrease from the initial crisis, but interesting a few people got really big doses at the start, hundreds got 10-20 and thousands got the "under 10" category, that's got to be unprecedented for nuclear industry, at least in the west.

    SAGA, Japan, Nov. 1, Kyodo

The mayor of Genkai in Saga Prefecture on Tuesday effectively approved Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s plan to resume operation of a nuclear reactor that came to halt as a result of human error at its power plant in the town.

''I am persuaded to some degree,'' Hideo Kishimoto told reporters after hearing explanations from Kyushu Electric Executive Vice President Haruyoshi Yamamoto.

''We will reactivate the reactor in a day or two with a view to resuming normal operations within this week,'' Yamamoto said. english.kyodonews.jp
