Gov't official drinks Fukushima plant water
Cabinet Office Parliamentary Secretary Yasuhiro Sonoda drinks water taken from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Fukushima Prefecture during a press conference in Tokyo on Oct. 31, 2011. He drank the water, taken from the basements of the No. 5 and 6 reactor buildings, after a reporter asked him to do so to prove it is safe. (Kyodo) english.kyodonews.jp

    7 billionth baby in Fukushima
Tomoko Watanabe, 20, holds her son, who was born on Oct. 31, 2011, as one of the ''7 billionth babies,'' at a hospital in the city of Fukushima. The U.N. Population Fund estimates that the world's population exceeded 7 billion that day. Watanabe said she will raise her son in Fukushima despite relatively high radiation levels due to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. (Kyodo) english.kyodonews.jp

    Japan-Vietnam nuclear cooperation
Citizens group members protest on Oct. 31, 2011, in front of the prime minister's office in Tokyo, where Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung met the same day and agreed to continue their cooperation on nuclear power. Under a joint statement signed between the two leaders, Vietnam has ''expressed its strong desire for the provision of nuclear technologies from Japan.'' (Kyodo) english.kyodonews.jp

Japan, for its part, assured Vietnam it will provide technologies that ''represent the world's highest level of nuclear safety''. english.kyodonews.jp

China to preserve Japanese Unit 731 biological warfare sites

    BEIJING, Oct. 31, Kyodo

The northeastern Chinese city of Harbin will enforce a regulation from Tuesday to preserve sites used by a covert biological and chemical warfare unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during World War II, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.

The protection law reportedly covers the headquarters of the so-called Unit 731, a factory that produced shells containing biological agents, a liaison office on Jilin Street, a dormitory, the then-Japanese consulate, single and groups of structures in the testing ground as well as other sites.

Officially known as the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department of the Kwantung Army, Unit 731 was the nerve center of Japan's biological warfare during its war in China and Southeast Asia from 1937 to 1945.

  • Noda: Japan to continue to export nuclear tech

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says Japan will export nuclear power generation plants to Vietnam as planned despite the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi facility.

Noda met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Tokyo on Monday.

They discussed an agreement reached in October of last year between the 2 countries that Japan would sell 2 nuclear reactors to Vietnam.

The 2 leaders confirmed in a joint document that Japan would cooperate in Vietnam's nuclear power project with enhanced safety levels, based on lessons learned from the accident in Fukushima.

Noda and Dung also agreed on the joint mining of rare earth minerals in Vietnam.

Noda later told reporters that Vietnam's stability and development is important for Japan's national interests.

  • Vietnam PM confirms Japan's nuclear plant contract

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has reconfirmed his country's policy to purchase Japanese nuclear reactors despite the Fukushima accident.

The visiting prime minister met Japan's trade and industry minister Yukio Edano on Monday.

Dung told Edano that Vietnam trusts Japan's advanced nuclear technology. He said his government wants Japanese firms to build the world's safest nuclear power plants in the country.

Edano thanked Vietnam's continued confidence in the safety and technological quality of Japan's nuclear plants even after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Edano and Dung also agreed that the 2 countries will continue their joint mining of rare earth minerals in Vietnam.

Japanese companies last year won contracts to build 2 reactors. Vietnam plans to start operating by 2021 to meet increasing electricity demand.

Talks between Japan and Vietnam on government support and financial aid for the projects was suspended for a while after the accident in Fukushima Prefecture.

  • An official drinks water from Fukushima plant

A senior government official drank a glass of water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Monday in an apparent effort to demonstrate its safety.

On October 7th, Tokyo Electric Power Company began spraying about 70 tons of purified water over the compound at its Fukushima nuclear plant every day. The utility uses the water after removing radioactive substances and salt from the contaminated water that has accumulated in the basements of the Numbers 5 and 6 reactor buildings.

TEPCO and the government's nuclear safety agency say the level of radioactive cesium in the purified water is below the government standard for bathing, and does little harm to the environment.

Reporters in Tokyo have been grilling Cabinet Office Parliamentary Secretary Yasuhiro Sonoda on the safety of the purified water since the middle of October.

On Monday, Sonoda demonstrated to the reporters the safety of the water by drinking a glass of it.

When asked if he could wipe away public concern about the water, Sonoda said he drank the water because he was asked to, but he does not think his act can ensure the water's safety.

He added that the best way to do that is with data.

  • The UK nuclear story is posted, I updated it with the BBC article. It sure looks to me like this is a PR dodge to avoid public questioning funding for these nuclear projects. EDF is wondering about them, citibank says they are a waste. The UK govt. must be hard pressed to justify more waste. They might as well just let the pile of cash on fire.
    by lillymunster 10/31/2011 5:21:24 PM

  • @Edano, all that's missing is a crystal ball to see if he dies of cancer in n years. And even if he did, you can't be sure it was because of that water. All that stupid test proved is there wasn't enough radioactivity in the water to cause acute radiation sickness. It's amazing how nuclear experts are only too eager to exploit public ignorance about radiobiology.

  • GREEN RIVER, Emery County — When and if a nuclear power plant will be built in Utah depends largely on the waters of the Green River.

The pivotal question of whether there is enough water in the Colorado River's chief tributary will likely be determined by the end of the year with decisions rendered by the State Engineer's Office, the agency that decides water rights issues.

Blue Castle Holdings, whose president and chief executive officer is former state lawmaker Aaron Tilton, proposes to divert 53,600 acre feet of water from the Green River. An acre-foot of water is enough water to supply a household of four for a year. www.deseretnews.com

This is the clearest expression I've seen of age-dependent vulnerability to radiation. I created this graph from NAS BEIR VII Phase 2 data, Table 12D-1 www.nap.edu From that table I added and plotted the All cancers sums for both male and female per age group, so the data points represent both males and females at the x-axis ages. Both sexes show the same age-dependent radio-vulnerability.
