  • greek pm got his vote of confidence!! I am pleased I think
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:32:51 AM

  • @ Elaine & Lily, I can't believe we are still searching for answers after so many months. It seems the answers should be available, but are not. So I ask, is it information that is being withheld or do they really not have a clue where all that fuel has ended up. Maybe a bit of both.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 2:34:27 AM

  • @Lurking both.

@MIA - could this explain the I131 in October rice if iodine is in the chain?
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 2:36:59 AM

  • @Lurking @M.I.A. I think that they know much fuel is underground but they do not know where faults have opened , how deep crevaces are etc because after the quake and subsequent ones they have just filled the cracks and laid metal plates over the bigger ones, no surveys of depths etc
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:37:05 AM

  • @ Elaine, you would think they could do a flyover scan for such things. You would think the military would have that capability.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 2:41:14 AM

  • Dean's comment/post below hits the nail right on the head. Our hearts go out to all the people living in Japan. Everyone expects a quick solution to a problem that has no answer. All the top scientists in the world and still no solution. Seems like its all a learning experience. All this teaches mankind is don't play with nuclear power because there is no manual to fix the unknown.
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 2:44:11 AM

  • @Lurking they cant the air is heavily polluted tepco readings are not indicative of polution higher up
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:45:11 AM

  • @Lurking @elainekirk I read an article somewhere last night stating that the US was going to get involved in a survey of Japan's situation. I'll try to find it again. Did anyone else read this article?
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 2:45:45 AM

  • @Lurking they are measuring at fixed points and I note in todays report on soil..... just a mo I will get the exact wording
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:46:22 AM

  • @MaryW all the kings horses, all the kings men, couldn't Fukushima back together again.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 2:47:07 AM

  • @lillymunster I believe thats the truth
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 2:47:38 AM

  • @Elaine & Mary W. My nephew is in the Navy and stationed in South Korea. He works on planes that make these types of scans. He can't say what his next mission is, but he did mention Japan.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 2:48:26 AM

  • *1 Samples were collected at the places near [① Ground] and [③ Near the industrial waste disposal facility], in order to avoid the same places
analyzed in the past surveys. At [② Wild birds' forest], samples were collected at the same place in the direction of the depth and the place
is changed when no more samples can be collected.).
    *2 Distance from Units 1&2
*3 Regarding the result of analysis by Japan Chemical Analysis, the half-life is not adjusted according to the period before sampling www.tepco.co.jp
note the readings are 500mtrs from 1&2 and 'to avoid sampling in same place' ?? surely only by doing so would you know if levels were rising?
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:49:50 AM

  • I was having a conversation today, and we concluded: the problem is, Japan is a small island and there is no where to go.
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 2:50:14 AM

  • @MaryW that is the core of Japan's nuclear dilemma and always has been. kurosawa used this as part of Fuji in Red in his movie Dreams. It is a partial reason why Germany was keen to dump nuclear. If you only have so much land you have nowhere to go when you poison it all for generations.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 2:55:19 AM

  • @MaryW there isnt there should have been more done from the beggining , I dont know what can be done now so many people are hurting/frightened/in debt
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:55:26 AM

  • @Lurking oh I hope he is careful and carries his own testing gear
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 2:56:17 AM

  • @Elaine, I hope so too. I would hope they allow some personal testing gear. I tried to send my geiger counter to South Korea with my son in law. It was not allowed.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 2:57:09 AM

  • @elainekirk there are lots of empty real estate left over from their market crash. Those places should be somehow purchased, given, subsidized for those needing to relocate. They need a jobs program and they need to be honest about the true extent of the damage and risk rather than trying to bully people into living in it.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 2:57:16 AM

  • please remove last to booboo posts thanks
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 2:57:57 AM

  • @Lurking If they are doing anything in eastern Japan I am sure there is someone monitoring for the US military on every operation. They are not stupid and operate outside the political nonsense.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 2:58:40 AM

  • The initial heat images taken over Fukushima was done by US forces in Japan that operate the drone fleet. They were temp/heat images. SDF did some helicopter fly overs. I think they filmed, did some sort of rad readings, not sure what else. If there is a way to find a heat source through a building and soil that would be the best way to try to find the corium. Someone mentioned some mining technologies that can be used to penetrate soil and rock. I know nothing about that but has potential to help locate things?
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 3:01:29 AM

  • 'U.S. Think Tank Calls for Radiation Exposure Survey on Fukushima.' (Does anyone have a subscription, thats the only way we can have access to this article.) english.kyodonews.jp
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:01:35 AM

  • @Lily, the one thing I have learned with having so many young men in my family in the military is that the military looks out for "assets" but does not always consider the soldier as an asset. I have 1 Marine, 1 Navy, 2 Air Force, and 1 National Guard, my husband was also an Air Force brat. It's sad that they don't put more value on personel
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 3:01:46 AM

  • @Lurking human capital is far more dispensable than investment capital
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 3:04:12 AM

  • I know they have the capability to scan for landmines and reach the ocean floor. I also know they are changing the birds to read for nuclear weapons. You would hope they could scan for corium locations in a reactor. Maybe that is why they are changing the Navy planes over in South Korea. I only know that what my nephew does there (aviation electronics) is a specialized field that only 4 people in the Navy do.

  • Sample collection through gas management system in primary containment vessel
(Unit 2, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station www.tepco.co.jp
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 3:05:46 AM

  • @Lurking The hubby talks about being Uncle Sam's property etc. During a non-war situation bringing back ill/injured soldiers can get the higher up in lots of trouble. When the hubby in the army there was some higher up got in a ton of trouble for running PT out in the Texas heat until bunches of them dropped from heat stroke.

They should have some technology to find radioactive materials buried based on public statements made about capabilities.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 3:05:59 AM

  • @Lily, I agree. Just looking at how many soldiers we have in the area you would think this would be high on the priority list. Japan is mostly "family friendly" bases. South Korea is not. Both my nephew and son in law had to go over alone ~ no family members allowed for their jobs. The son in law loads and maintains nuclear weapons for the Air Force. I wish it was like we see on CSI or 24 ~ info is available quickly.

  • (Here is the article,a day later) "U.S. Task Force Lays Out Priorities for Post-quake Japan". Nov 05.2011 www.japantoday.com

  • @Lurking yes somehow the script always difers from reality
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 3:15:05 AM

  • @MaryW ~ thanks, going to read the article now.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 3:16:14 AM

  • Take note the ones 'Below detection limit' it doesnt say they was none detected

  • @Lurking Please note: 4th paragraph in the article 'maintaining the population's health in the face of a future crises." Is that telling us anything??
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:21:20 AM

  • @MaryW It tells me "we ain't seen nothing yet". Maybe I'm just getting jaded with all we have read over the last 7 1/2 months.
    by Lurking 11/5/2011 3:23:08 AM

  • The group that put out that policy article has nothing to do with the US government and is a think tank for energy and international trade.

So their call for Japan to open up to international trade at the same time that TPP international trade agreement is up for decision is um, convenient.

They had some good points but totally missed the need to get people working and in a safe situation instead worrying about taxes and international trade
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 3:24:55 AM

  • @elainekirk Thats a fine example of what Dean was talking about earlier. Something about paying attention to the conflict in Japan by how different organizations are wording the same problem.
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:26:21 AM

  • @lillymunster true, but we know money talks and people listen. At least the humanity is a big part of it
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:28:42 AM

  • @MaryW oh yes much word play and many people who put their own interests before the people they are paid to serve
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 3:29:06 AM

  • I must take to my bed see you all later :)
    by elainekirk 11/5/2011 3:29:32 AM

  • don't think any country or organization can only focus on the Japanese people, Japan bigwigs would be offended.
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:30:02 AM

  • @MaryW the fine print TEPCO has been using on their "ND" (none detected) is a big scam. The threshold on it is generally quite high as in equipment COULD detect at that level. So these ND readings are intended to confuse.

    IE: Do I have $100
    Answer: None Detected
    Reality: I have $99
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 3:30:25 AM

  • @lillymunster I agree, it is to confuse and pull the wool over peoples' eyes, BUT, a lot of people , including myself, are very offended by their show of stupidity
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:32:16 AM

  • Might be back later on, out for now
    by MaryW 11/5/2011 3:33:34 AM

  • @MaryW A business (or organization) being caught attempting a low quality fraud will blow up in their faces. People are then angry they were lied to and that said organization assumed them to be stupid enough to fall for it.
