  • Japan, Turkey to resume negotiations on nuclear cooperation pact

    CANNES, France, Nov. 4, Kyodo

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed Thursday to resume negotiations on their countries' nuclear cooperation pact, a government official said.

During their talks on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in the French resort town of Cannes, Noda told Erdogan that Tokyo will move ahead with civilian nuclear cooperation with Turkey by sharing lessons from the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, according to the Japanese official.

Touching on Turkey's plan to construct a nuclear power station, Erdogan was quoted by the official as telling Noda that he hopes the bilateral negotiations on the matter will go forward. english.kyodonews.jp

  • in this nook of the woods it's all about jobs and the utility disfavors alternative energy. On the surface, Dominion is offering support for solar panels on private residences around here. The snag is that they plan to introduce a standby charge: "That standby charge is just a charge for our wires and equipment that must be there when their self-generation isn't working," said Dianne Corsello, manager of customer solutions and new technology at Dominion. "It wouldn't be fair for our other customers to bear those costs."

  • eventually, I made this post correctly. You may delete the two prior attempts. The cynical aspect of this argument is that the utility has not hesitation to try charge all customers regardless for the earthquake costs at North Anna NPS.

    by Peter 11/4/2011 2:02:03 AM

  • @lillymunster , only those 560 households with panels in this great state. It is disheartening.
One difference to the public meeting in Japan may be that the proponents did not hide their affiliation.
    by Peter 11/4/2011 2:09:27 AM

  • @you , as if it were not expensive enough to install the panels.
    by Peter 11/4/2011 2:11:42 AM

  • @Peter So if you installed your own solar and didn't grid tie it you would avoid the fee?
    by lillymunster 11/4/2011 2:12:40 AM

  • @lillymunster , Dominion installs the grid equipment if you participate in their program, and I believe they have own ideas on what panels you should install. If you insist on different choices, there are more fees.
    by Peter 11/4/2011 2:21:50 AM

  • @Peter Or you do what people here do, don't involve your power utility and instead set up a switching system and batteries so you draw of your own power until it gets low then kick over to grid power.

    by Edano 11/4/2011 2:31:48 AM

  • @lillymunster , if you install totally independent parallel systems, Dominion does not care I guess. But in that case, you won't feed anything back into the grid. Here is a trial project in the area: www.dom.com

  • Gov't OKs plan to provide 900 bil. yen financial aid to TEPCO

    TOKYO, Nov. 4, Kyodo

The government gave the green light Friday to provide about 900 billion yen to Tokyo Electric Power Co. so that the cash-strapped utility can secure funds to pay massive compensation related to the nuclear crisis at its Fukushima Daiichi power plant through March.

The move came as the utility known as TEPCO promised to cut more than 2.55 trillion yen in costs over 10 years such as by cutting corporate pension payments, and facilitate the often-criticized payment process under a special business plan crafted by the company and a state-backed funding body.

In approving the plan, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yukio Edano told TEPCO President Toshio Nishizawa, ''Considering the responsibility of borrowing massive amounts of money from the public, even though it is temporarily, I would like (TEPCO to) implement considerate compensation and thorough streamlining efforts.'' english.kyodonews.jp
