  • En route to the target, the Israeli planes crossed the gulf of Aqaba. Unknowingly, the squadron flew directly over the yacht of King Hussein of Jordan, who was vacationing in the Gulf at the time.[58] Taking into account the location, bearing, and armament of the Israeli planes, Hussein quickly deduced the Iraqi reactor to be the most probable target. Hussein immediately contacted his government and ordered a warning to be sent to the Iraqis. However, due to a communication failure the message was never received and the Israeli planes entered Iraqi air space undetected.[51]

Upon reaching Iraqi airspace the squadron split up, with two of the F-15s forming close escort to the F-16 squadron, and the remaining F-15s dispersing into Iraqi airspace as a diversion and ready back-up. The attack squadron descended to 30 m over the Iraqi desert, attempting to fly under the radar of the Iraqi defences

  • Upon reaching Iraqi airspace the squadron split up, with two of the F-15s forming close escort to the F-16 squadron, and the remaining F-15s dispersing into Iraqi airspace as a diversion and ready back-up. The attack squadron descended to 30 m over the Iraqi desert, attempting to fly under the radar of the Iraqi defences.[51]

At 18:35 local time (14:35 GMT), 20 km from the Osirak reactor complex, the F-16 formation climbed to 2,100 m and went into a 35-degree dive at 1,100 km/h, aimed at the reactor complex. At 1,100 m, the F-16s began releasing the Mark 84 bombs in pairs, at 5-second intervals.[51] At least eight of the sixteen released bombs struck the containment dome of the reactor.[49] It was later revealed that half an hour before the Israeli planes arrived, a group of Iraqi soldiers manning anti-aircraft defenses had left their posts for an afternoon meal, turning off their radars.[36] The Israeli planes were still intercepted by Iraqi defenses but managed to evade the remaining anti-aircraft fire.[36] The squadron climbed to high altitude and started their return to Israel. The attack lasted less than two minutes.[17] According to Ze'ev Raz, the leader of the attack force, the Israeli pilots radioed each other and recited the biblical verse Joshua 10:12 as they were returning to base

  • @Edano Israel only had rockets, fighter jets and a few smaller nukes IIRC. If the US got involved (I don't think they will) the US has some massive bombs that can take out deep bunkers etc. IIRC Bushehr isn't heavily fortified, it is a reactor. Iran's other facilities are heavily bunkered. If Israel bombs Bushehr I think they would damage enough of the exposed but critical systems to blow it up and expose the core or send it into a meltdown. It is really short sighted for anyone to think this a good idea after what we have seen happens to the environment and civilian populations at Chernobyl, Fuku, Semipalatinsk.
    by lillymunster 11/5/2011 6:43:58 PM

  • and it is really far away, so they have plenty of pre warning time.
    by Edano 11/5/2011 6:44:10 PM

  • During its war with Iran, Iraq bombed the Bushehr site six times (in March 1984, February 1985, March 1985, July 1986, and twice in November 1987), which destroyed the entire core area of both reactors. According to officials of Technischer Ueberwachungsverein, Germany's National Reactor Inspectorate, before the bombings, Bushehr-1 could have been completed in about three years. Note, however, that, at the time of the bombings, none of the main equipments had been installed, and in fact two steam generators (that use the heat from the reactors to produce steam to be used in power generators) were stored in Italy, while the pressure vessel for Bushehr-1 was stored in Germany.

  • @lillymunster , my take is that an attack is not imminent, and if the Israelis tried, the attack is not going to be on the NPS, perhaps on the research labs next to it. The most likely targets, though, would be the sites with the uranium enrichment technology. But then the one we know about is deep inside a mountain and there may be others we do not know about. As to sanctions, they never worked. I once lived in an apartment overlooking warehouses for import-export goods. Semis with Iranian license plates never quit rumbling by. The trade with the Bazaar kept flourishing over the decades, regardless of theocracy and plenty complaints by the US State Dept.

  • @lillymunster maybe they just realised that pretence was futile , maybe the offers of equipment etc have dried up, ie they left a very expensive prototype robot atop unit 2 didn't they? it would have been too contaminated to return but the developers would have been hoping for positive publicity they aint gonna be handing more over now. Maybe tepco need the extra's that the truth will bring

  • @elainekirk They lost a mini-copter on the roof of 2 and sent someone to fetch that. Then they lost Quince the one that can climb stairs on the refueling floor of 2. That one wasn't cheap and I don't think it is a mass produced bot like the packbots.
    by lillymunster 11/6/2011 12:50:06 AM

  • Tepco could have the little robot place rad. monitors with wireless connections at the high rad locations in front of the containment hatches. The data recorded by these instruments could be compared with the readings from inside the containments. Perhaps then we would find out more about the reliability of the measurements inside that fluctuate so much.

  • @Peter Melzer it is in some ways but I think that we have to bear in mind they they are under pressure re compensation and the gov is trying to increase trade Tepco are not unaware that scary stories frighten people nor are they unaware that the gov want to keep people in the dark to prevent 'fear and panic'
    by elainekirk 11/6/2011 1:51:32 AM

  • It could be tactics by tepco to stop the gov 'bullying' them into adequately compensating people. Nothing more effective than blackmail
