  • Over 80 percent of nuke reactors to be shut down

Another nuclear reactor in Japan will be shut down for regular inspection on Friday.

With this addition to the list, more than 80 percent of the nuclear reactors in the country will not be operating.

The shutdown procedure for the reactor at the Takahama nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture, central Japan, will begin in the evening. The reactor will come to a complete halt before dawn on Saturday.

The latest shutdown means 44 of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors, or more than 80 percent, will not be generating power.

Some of the idle reactors are now undergoing stress tests, a prerequisite for deciding whether to resume operation.

Authorities from Fukui Prefecture, which has 11 nuclear reactors, say they will not approve resumption unless the central government provides them with new safety standards which take into account the findings from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

Other reactors also face a similar situation in considering whether to restart operations.

All nuclear reactors in Japan which are currently operating are scheduled to undergo regular inspection by next spring, at the latest. If the present stalemate in safety persists, the country will see all 54 nuclear reactors shut down.

  • EU to extend import restrictions on Japanese foods until March

    BRUSSELS, Nov. 24, Kyodo

The European Commission said Thursday it will extend import restrictions on Japanese food products until March amid the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The decision was made based on reports in Japan that radioactive substances exceeding safety standards are still being detected in some food and feed products, the executive body of the European Union said.

Food and feed products imported from 11 prefectures, including Fukushima, Miyagi and Tokyo, will continue to require test results verifying their safety, while those from Nagano Prefecture will be excluded as the safety of products from there has been confirmed, it said. english.kyodonews.jp

Industry minister Edano sells Fukushima produce
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yukio Edano (far L) sells newly harvested rice and apples from Fukushima Prefecture at the ministry building in Tokyo on Nov. 24, 2011, in a gesture of support for the farming industry in the northeastern prefecture. The industry has been suffering amid consumer concern that produce from the prefecture is contaminated with radiation from the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. • Enviroment Pollution in United Kingdom on Thursday, 24 November, 2011 at 12:35 (12:35 PM) UTC.
    Description
Higher-than-average radioactivity levels have been detected in a drain on a main road at Seascale. Sellafield Ltd said: “We have no reason to believe that this presents any risk to the public.” Sellafield is believed to be the source of the activity but investigations are under way to find out exactly where from. A spokesperson said: “No activities have been carried out on site that could account for a recent elevation of levels and it is therefore likely that these results reflect the presence of historical contamination.” The ‘hot’ drain is on Drigg Road, leading from Seascale to Drigg village. The radioactivity could be from old site operations or residue from the cull of contaminated pigeons in the area several years ago. Other drains have been contaminated in the past. The discovery of increased levels of radioactivity is highlighted in the annual Radioactivity in Food and the Environment Report. The spokesman for campaign group Cumbrians Opposed to Radioactivity, Martin Forwood, has asked for an urgent explanation of what he said was an “unprecedented hike in radioactive concentrations”. He added: “Until then there can be little public reassurance on the sudden appearance of these high levels being found in Seascale some 13 years after the effects of the Seascale pigeon saga were supposed to have been remediated.” The West Cumbria Stakeholders Group, the community’s Sellafield health and safety community watchdog, has called for reassurances from Sellafield management and the Environment Agency. David Moore, Stakeholders chairman, who lives in Seascale, said yesterday: “The amounts of radioactivity are very small and there is no danger to the public. It is still a concern that higher levels have suddenly been detected. I have asked for reassurance. “It may be contamination from old Sellafield operations but we need to know why the levels are higher and where it’s come from.” hisz.rsoe.hu

  • @Edano, wow! I'm not sure I understand the rational for the level of physical aggression of the French anti-nuclear protests. It seems like more like terrorism than protest. Couldn't their destructive tactics increase the odds of a nuclear accident? It seems like they're trying to destroy infrastructure.
    by Ian 11/25/2011 1:34:59 AM

  • @Ian yes they destroy the railways. but i would not call it terroristic. it is altruistic.
    by Edano 11/25/2011 1:36:19 AM

  • the overall tactic is to make the transports as expensive as possible.
    by Edano 11/25/2011 1:37:17 AM

  • the resistance against castor transports has a 30 years history with escalating violence. they move the shit from here to there without having a final waste storage. this is illegitime.
    by Edano 11/25/2011 1:43:01 AM

  • Always Sellafield.
I don't see the French protests as terrorism. The intent is to stop the shipment, not steal it or explode the casks or something.

  • Vivre, do you know what he means about being judged?
    by lillymunster 11/25/2011 1:45:51 AM

  • @lillymunster the destruction of infrastructure (rails) can be valued as terrorism, and that's what our politicians want to make it appear. but the resistance is based on so many people, simple farmers and normal neighbours among them, they all solidarise to each other, they cannot convince the public that they are "terrorists".
    by Edano 11/25/2011 1:49:35 AM

  • the destroying of rails has formed a new word in germany: "schottern". it means the removal of the stones in the railway bed. if the stones are removed, the train cannot pass, because the rails could collapse.
    by Edano 11/25/2011 1:52:29 AM

  • @Edano the rails belong to the people. In the US there are those that want to label anything they don't like or anything that speaks out or protests as "terrorism". When they start claiming 14 year old kids are committing terrorism by saying angry unspecific things the word has lost all meaning
    by lillymunster 11/25/2011 1:54:17 AM

  • so, in front of the castor waggons, they have to move a construction train checking the rails. this makes it slow and expensive. here and there they even pour concrete over the rails. the people are very creative.
