Someone noted that the blowout panels are dark and suggested that means they were open, but that's a inference from misunderstanding of FLIR, if in fact it is FLIR footage, which I believe it is.

    by Peter 1/10/2012 3:04:51 PM

  • @Peter have you seen mention of some sort of raw data feed from EPA? If we could access that we could probably data crunch it like we do with the TEPCO reactor stats, ie: make our own output mechanisms.
    by lillymunster 1/10/2012 3:24:22 PM

  • @lilly, supposedly data can be downloaded in CSV format through an Sql query from the epa: www.epa.gov . Only I had no success yet.
    by Peter 1/10/2012 4:35:10 PM

  • This option here cdxnode64.epa.gov delivers results that can be downloaded in CVS format. It works, but only for the last 500 entries or less. However, one could use the data for a weekly update. Would not know how to automate the update, though.

  • Powerful earthquake hits off coast of Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – A powerful earthquake has hit waters of western Indonesia, prompting local officials to issue a tsunami warning.

The U.S. Geological survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck 260 miles (420 kilometers) off the coast of Aceh province.

It was centered 18 miles (30 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

Arief Akhir, an official with Indonesia's geological agency, said a tsunami warning has been issued.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Aceh. www.usatoday.com

  • Indonesia issues tsunami warning following 7.6 quake off Sumatra

    By BNO News

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on early Wednesday morning, seismologists said, prompting a tsunami warning for local coastlines.

The earthquake at 12.37 a.m. local time (1837 GMT Tuesday) was centered about 423 kilometers (262 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh on Sumatra. It struck about 29.1 kilometers (18.1 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the seismological agency of Indonesia, measured the strength of the earthquake at 7.6 on the Richter scale. The USGS put the magnitude at 7.3 on the regional moment magnitude (Mw) scale.

Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami, BMKG issued a tsunami warning for local coastlines. No tsunami watches or warnings were immediately issued for other countries.

"There is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the earthquake epicenter," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. "Authorities in the region near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility."

Indonesia is on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions also occur frequently in the region.

On December 26, 2004, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded struck off the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. The 9.1-magnitude earthquake unleashed a deadly tsunami, striking scores of countries in the region. In all, at least 227,898 people were killed.

Most recently, on October 25, 2010, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck just off the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra. As a result, a wall of water killed at least 435 people on the islands and impacted more than 20 villages.

  • Nuclear Event in USA on Tuesday, 10 January, 2012 at 17:43 (05:43 PM) UTC.
    Description
A suburban New York nuclear reactor has been shut down to repair a pump. Entergy Nuclear, owner of the Indian Point power plant in Buchanan, says there was no release of radioactivity. The pump is one of four that supply cooling water to the Indian Point 2 reactor. An Entergy spokesman says operators had noticed an increase of water flow through the pump's mechanical seal over the past two weeks. He says that on Monday night, the extra flow reached a point at which operators decided to shut down for a repair. He says it's not yet known how long Indian Point 2 will be offline. It had been 230 days since its last shutdown. The other reactor at the plant, Indian Point 3, continued operating at full power. hisz.rsoe.hu

  • @Edano i44.tinypic.com today's 7.1/7.3 quake (orange) is farther from land and it looks like it's in a deep undersea trench (-14000 feet elevation). The Dec 2004 quake (star) was a lot closer to land and in more shallow water (-3500 feet elevation)

  • Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but witnesses reported only minor shaking on land.

The quake was centered in the northern Indian Ocean, more than 400 km (250 miles) off northern Sumatra and more than 29 km (18 miles) beneath the surface. Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning for the area, but the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a massive wave like the one that devastated the region in 2004.

The quake hit at 12:37 a.m. Wednesday (1:37 p.m. Tuesday ET), according to the USGS. There were no immediate reports of damage, and hotel clerks contacted by CNN reported only mild shaking. One front desk clerk in Aceh said a few hotel guests went outside when the quake hit, but most weren't awakened.

The region is highly active seismically, and a 9.1-magnitude quake in December 2004 generated a tsunami that killed people as far away as eastern Africa. The death toll from the combined disaster topped 280,000 in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia. edition.cnn.com
