good morning shadow, very nice seeing you and hope all is well on the home front
by dean 1/8/2012 2:30:07 PM

wow, a vip-meeting here ?
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:30:13 PM

(veteran meeting) lol :)
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:31:03 PM

Edano... hello, very nice seeing you ... ha ha @ veteran meeting
by dean 1/8/2012 2:31:20 PM

@dean hope you are fine.
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:32:42 PM

@Edano, I am doing very well, rehab in progress on the knees, next will be the followup with the cardiologist on 23rd
by dean 1/8/2012 2:34:57 PM

@dean good to hear.
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:35:30 PM

@shadow, lets share results...
by dean 1/8/2012 2:38:10 PM

@ Edano.. over the past month and 1/2 I've been away much of the time but intend to be back more... what is the most significant development that has happened in your mind over that time?
by dean 1/8/2012 2:39:17 PM

maybe the drilling under #2, but we have a complete news blackout, we only have the worker tweets, nothing official anymore.
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:41:05 PM

if the story is correct, they found corium under #2 ...
by Edano 1/8/2012 2:41:37 PM

@Edano that is significant, I've been wondering what to start researching and that would be a good one to try and get sources....

Reactor 4 : Spent fuel pool was boiling without water after 1/1/2012
Posted by Mochizuki on January 8th, 2012Following up this article about the decreasing of water level at reactor 4… The blogger woman in Minamisoma leaked information from an actual Fukushima worker. According to her post, after the earthquake of 1/1/2012, the pipe of spent fuel pool for reactor 4 was broken, the pool completely lost its water. The worker stated, Sooner [...]

Following up this article
fukushima-diary.com After the earthquake, it turned out that the fallout amount in Fukushima from 1/2/2012~1/3/2012 spiked up to be 558.1 Bq/m2 (Cs-134 and 137). The total fallout of Fukushima of November was only 347.7 Bq/m2 for 30 days, which is less than the fallout of the 2 days of 1/2 and 1/3. [...]

seems that they have major problems with #4 sfp since the big quake on jan 1. maybe the pool cracked ?

Water level is still decreasing at reactor 4Posted by Mochizuki on January 8th, 2012
Following up this article http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/01/emergency-mail-from-tepco-to-mass-media-about-reactor-4/ From the article of Tokyo newspaper(1/8/2012 JST), it turned ou that the decreasing water level problem at reactor 4 was not stopped, it has been on-going at least until 1/7/2012. It is assumed that the water in the cooling system is flowing into the container vessel instead. Because nothing has [...]

with the water boil off not helping much either @@ Edano... I will return ..

On the corium. Peter questioned the ability to drill under, that they would need to possibly dig a pit to get a drill rig underneath. I'm not sure, If they knew something and could drill down at an angle under an edge like under the torus they would not be drilling under the whole thing. Anyone know how they drilled under Chernobyl and what it took?
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:33:45 PM

@lillymunster nowadays it is possible to drill curves. not angles but curves. a pit is not necessary for simple drillings e.g. to achieve drill cores.
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:37:01 PM

at first i also thought that they would need a pit, which would be quite difficult at the site, probably impossible. but they can drill into the soil with a 45° degree angle and then make a curve to go horizontal.
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:40:58 PM

@Edano K. I will do some looking on drill rigs later today. I thought they had maybe more capability. The torus level bottom is 2-3 normal "floors" below ground. We won't be able to see any of this kind of work on the cameras since none show ground level. TEPCO's last images are from the end of the year. They are not reporting anything.
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:41:03 PM

@Edano Now that you mention it I remember some issues in the US with drilling companies drilling across into wells on other people's land. I think it was natural gas.
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:42:04 PM

i guess it depends on the rock. drilling curves in soil is easier than in bedrock.
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:42:51 PM

@Edano They have a silty clay towards the top and mudrock down deep IIRC. Dean found this report on Fuku's geology someone put together that might help
fukushima.over-blog.frby lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:44:20 PM

I do know they have been drilling test holes around the plant to determine where to put the underground wall they have to install. Heard it from Sunny
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:44:54 PM

@lillymunster yes, vertically. but we talk about horizontal drilling. :)
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:45:46 PM

well, nearly a 90° angle...
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:50:35 PM

90 degree turn would work well at that site.
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:50:57 PM

Something noticed on the Tomioka web cam is there were lots of military vehicles going back and forth but in recent weeks-months. Seemed odd since SDF has not been active. Unless the ones cleaning Namie were using that road but hwy 6 isn't the main highway?
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:52:33 PM

professionalhorizontaldrilling.com
finally i found this mobile horizontal drilling system: www.professionalhorizontaldrilling.com this is what i think they are doing more or less.

@Edano, do we get SFP temps in reactor stats?
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:56:18 PM

@lillymunster no
by Edano 1/8/2012 3:56:34 PM

@Edano can they get far enough away to do that kind of drill?
by lillymunster 1/8/2012 3:56:43 PM

@Edano I wonder if METI is still doing the reactor stat PDF? It would have it sometimes? I wonder what 4's temps have been doing.
