  • .. on the other hand I've had my own work plagarised by others who then got the credit for it!
    by UKVal 1/16/2012 8:00:54 PM

  • @UKVal I have had my work plagerised a few times, by medium sized companies. These laws do nothing for small guys or individual artists. They do however give these big companies god like ability to squash anyone they find inconvenient for any reason by crying "piracy". There is no debate involved or ability to defend yourself. They shut you down with no warning and there seems to be no venue to un-do it. Little guys would not be able to invoke these laws. You need corporate lawyers to get anyone to pay attention. There is nothing to stop the abuse of these laws. Even worse if anyone could take down a web site can you imagine the chaos where every petty vendetta gets a site taken down?
    by lillymunster 1/16/2012 8:05:07 PM

  • @lillymunster agreed. - SOPA etc are yet another initiative of powerful business interests to protect their own - like the attempt, fortunately defeated, to copyright parts of the human genome.
    by UKVal 1/16/2012 8:07:49 PM

  • The more I think about all of this, much of it is US centric because it has been such a big deal here. It ties into the internet censorship in other countries, abuse of it during the Arab Spring and what has gone on in Japan. Iori from Fukushima Diary was questioned by he police twice before he left Japan over his blog posts. The Japan rumors law scared off a bunch of people. We saw a number of Japan contributors dissapear right after that. Maybe we look at this as an opportunity to look at worldwide censorship tactics?

  • @UKVal we have seen very bizarre lengths big corps will go to in order to harass little guys. There was an ice cream shop in Chicago was ordered by the health department to stop operating to use food service fake ice cream mix. A big food company had some very carefully worded law that made it hard for small from scratch food stores to legally operate claiming it was unsafe even though it didn't violate any established food safety laws.

  • The United States has long been a strong advocate for the protection and promotionof an open Internet. However, by institutionalizing the use of internet censorship tools to enforcedomestic law in the United States creates a paradox that undermines its moral authority tocriticize repressive regimes.

  • @lillymunster I think looking at the issue world wide would be a really good idea. Don't know if you're aware of the Levinson Inquiry into press ethics currently going on here, but it's showing up exactly how politicians have been running scared of Murdoch and his cronies & has curtailed what gets into the media, how it is reported & possibly the outcome of National elections.

On January 24, PIPA (the Protect IP Act) is scheduled to go before the Senate. PIPA is a related Senate bill with similarities to SOPA. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he plans to bring it up on the first day the Senate is back in session. PROTECT IP Act. en.wikipedia.org

  • Here is a link discussing blogging and copyright law - aboutweblogs.com and another guide: support.google.com I believe there is possible impact to us and groups like us. I can't sugar coat the goal of such measures as SOPA/PIPA - curb free speech on a technicality. It's the "It" of blogging. I don't have time to post articles about the server farms popping up (us based software/many foreign farms) serving as a collector of data pulled off social media sites for mining later - to curb activist - overseas...here?

  • @UKVal big company with lawyers have decided tiny producers are a threat. I think some of it may be the trend of people looking to natural food, local small producers. It really seems like a pointless effort to beat up someone too small to hurt their business.

We know a guy who runs a German restaurant and bakery. The US food laws make it impossible for him to make his own sausages to sell without a huge change to his business. I think he had to become a meat producer in order to make his own sausages for his restaurant.
    by lillymunster 1/16/2012 8:18:03 PM

  • @lillymunster The phone hacking got coverage because of the celebs who gave evidence. The wider issue is about press freedom, or lack of it. It became apparent that Blair wooed Murdoch, as did Cameron who is close mates with the former News of The World editor. Cameron's Press Secretary had previously been editor & had to resign over the scandal. What's being uncovered is how certain 'red top' papers have shaped the political agenda, and public opinion about most social issues, to the point that it may have swayed elections. Our political system is so very different to yours with respect to funding election campaigns
    by UKVal 1/16/2012 8:23:37 PM

  • @lillymunster re sausages -here it would be blamed on the European Union as the British press spend a lot of their vitriol on complaining about EU regulations hampering British business!
    by UKVal 1/16/2012 8:25:41 PM

  • @UKVal So big media influencing politics?
Murdoch is blasting Obama for not supporting SOPA. He's using the internet to do it via twitter.
    by lillymunster 1/16/2012 8:26:45 PM

  • From here it does seem as if litigation has got out of hand in the States - we've now got the ambulance chasing lawyers etc, but this is a recent phenomenon here & a very unwelcome one.
    by UKVal 1/16/2012 8:28:29 PM

  • @UKVal we really don't have a litigation problem as far as individuals over litigating. There are always those crazy examples like the woman who sued McDonalds over hot coffee. We are seeing more where big companies use lawyers and the threat of litigation to harass competition.

Has the world lost faith in nuclear power? Almost a year after a devastating earthquake and tsunami crippled Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, there’s an emerging consensus in Japan and Germany that the hazards of nuclear energy overshadow its benefits. In the United States and other countries, the question remains unresolved. NUCLEAR AFTERSHOCKS

    Emergency generators should be installed
at high elevations or in watertight chambers. LESSON 2
If a cooling system is intended
to operate without power, make sure all of its parts can be manipulated without power. LESSON 3
Keep power trucks on or very close to the power plant site. LESSON 4
Install independent and secure battery systems to power crucial instruments during emergencies. LESSON 5
Ensure that catalytic hydrogen recombiners (power-free devices that turn dangerous hydrogen gas back into steam) are positioned at the tops of reactor buildings where gas would most likely collect. LESSON 6
Install power-free filters on vent lines to remove radio-active materials and allow for venting that won't harm nearby residents. m.spectrum.ieee.org
