perhaps an increased source of radiation is the result of the earthquakes opening fissures etc which allow a shifting or relocation of the corium's

The layers all run at an angle towards the sea. It sounds like it is mudstone then sandstone with deeper layers having volcanic rock mixed in.
by lillymunster 1/24/2012 12:16:31 AM

@dean we already know there are fissures at the plant, we have pictures.
by lillymunster 1/24/2012 12:16:49 AM

@LILLY... perhaps Edano can coincide elevation in radiation levels or the temp increase he pointed out to seismic activity

@dean tepco claims the increase is due to cleaning up around 2 and 3
by lillymunster 1/24/2012 12:27:05 AM

there are no recent abnormalities in the reactor data, everything is smooth, no spikes anymore, except the one in #2 torus radiation. no rad spikes anymore on quakes. the radiation in #1 seems to correlate now with the falling temps. but anyway tepco refers to the rising radiation level outside of the plants.
by Edano 1/24/2012 1:00:14 AM

but one criteria for cold shutdown was the reduction of radioactive emissions, so they should be more careful when cleaning up debris. better they postpone cold shutdown.

@Peter is that even possible?
by lillymunster 1/24/2012 2:50:45 AM

@Jim if weather traveled from north on down it might carry something with. But if it was raining and snowing the whole time down from up north it would be odd to still be dropping fallout in Yokohama? Radiation near the plant has been rising but it is hard to pin anything unless you could back track the weather system to a specific date around the plant. Not sure if you could conclusively do so even then?

@Mid Valley will take a look. Something I noticed is that some statistics being used are not what US capacity is but are what was/is generated. So if we have idled capacity in a non-nuclear sector but nuclear plants are running at max generation ability "generated" can be a higher percentage than actual true US capacity. This may be the loophole being used to claim higher percentages than reflect the true energy capacity of the US by sector. I have a couple of inquiries for more details with the EIA also.
by lillymunster 1/24/2012 3:51:04 AM

@Mid Valley that is an interesting table as it doesn't match up with other EIA documents about renewable current and future mix of power.

@Mid Valley that twitter account directed some nasty tweets and me of course they came with no facts to back them up. :-)

@Mid Valley I will see what the deal is with them. EIA is who put out the renewables are more than nukes info a few weeks ago too. I think this % issue is a very big bees nest some don't want discussed.

Morning-afternoon-evening.
The quakes around Fukushima seem to be taking on a similar pattern again of frequent 4-5 mag over a few days.
There was also a report from Yokohama of the same rad spikes. This is the graph with details. guregoro.sakura.ne.jp
Maybe we can translate the chart to get an idea?
